This is just a wild guess, but I'm pretty certain they weren't raw recruits. That is unless the Corps graduates a lot of middle aged men. It's been over a decade ago but I believe they said they were 2nd Marine Division out of Lejeune.

I don't know much about 2nd Mar Div. But I don't believe they train on Geiger much. Camp Geiger is a school (Marine Combat Training) or also known as the fourth part of Boot Camp. I was at Geiger for a very short time (four weeks) where I was Honor grad for 0351 Anti Tank Assaultman.

The school it self falls under 2nd Mar Div, but no one in the school has even received a hint as to their first permanent duty station yet. When the leave there, they've been Marines for about 17 weeks.

Now, now scoots...don't forget the SOI kids who are making infantry their career. They're there for another 8 weeks or so. :)

There are no active duty infantry units at Geiger. Geiger is a training base only.

I'm guessing KSBs historic battle was against a mob of admins from H&S Co or a class evolution from SNCOA or one of the other schools.


Now if we want to talk real world examples we could start with the massive clusterfuck that the 82nd left Al Anbar & Fallujah that I MEF had to clean up.

Uh, staff, yeah right. Camp Geiger has an entire brigade of armed to the teeth staff admins. Face facts, while it is an accomplishment to graduate Marine basic, the Corps is ill equipped and poorly trained for large scale, big boy war fighting. Why do you think they had to rely on an Army battalion to lead them back into Falluja, a city that was locked down by the 82nd for a year prior to handing over to the Marines.

It sure as shit doesn't have any line infantry units.

And yes unlike the Army the admin pogues do go to the field and train in infantry tactics regularly.

Hell even out band fights.

As for what constitutes "big boy" war you might want to go back over your history books. Those open plains tank battles aren't the bloody ones.

The Marine Corps is still the best at what it's always been the best at, seizing & holding ground and handling those messy "little boy" wars that are beneath big green. I have no problem conceding the big stuff to the Army. That's your damn mission. Roll out the big divisions once every 20-30 years or so. More power to you.

The 73 Eastings are the exception, not the norm. You might want to ponder on that the next time you try the relevancy argument.

Al Anbar in general and Fallujah specifically became such a festering mess specifically because Swanneck did such a piss poor job handling the Iraqis prior. He treated them like shit and created an atmosphere of resentment that led to the blow up later.

2-7 Cav was a good unit and they did what they were supposed to do; use their armor as a blocking force to isolate areas so that the Marines could go in and clean the hadjis out.

Do you really want to get into a pissing match over who carried the brunt of that op?

I have no problems with the Army and I sure as hell recognize the strengths they can bring to the battle that the 'Corps can't. Marines are specialists, they do one thing exceedingly well and are damn proud of that fact. They Army mission encompasses a broader range of objectives. There's nothing wrong with that. Just don't start waving your little e-peener around because you have a chip on your shoulder.

And no the problem isn't the Marines killed by incompetent AF pilots anymore than it is the British, Canadians & allied Iraqis that the AF has managed to slaughter as well.

The two times I had A-10s roll onto my position in Saudi I knew exactly where the FLOT was. One of those times the FAC from ANGLICO was screaming at the idiot to roll off...the whole time the pilot was ARGUING with him.

The problem is that the AF refuses to clean up it's own house. Maj Schmidt disobeys a direct order, kills four allied troops and gets an Article 15.

The solution is simple. The AF doesn't really want the CAS mission. Hand it over to the Army. Transfer the A-10s and let the doggies build whatever future fixed wing craft they deem necessary for the mission. That'll free you up to play with your fighters & strategic bombers like you really want. But of course we can't have that...that would mean less money in the coffers. Mission be damned.

But I digress, I'll let you get back to your combat coffee making.
