Coronavirus (COVID-19) is too exciting for adults to discuss (CLOSED)

Obviously there is (nor can be) a hard-fast number. But when the projected deaths caused by the lockdown start approaching those of actual COVID victims, along with number of lives ruined dwarfs the number of COVID deaths, then it becomes fairly apparent that the cure, and not the disease, is killing the patient.

How do you even begin to measure "lives ruined"?
How can you compare "projected deaths" to actual deaths?
That's a false equivalence.

Not sure that is the right place for this, but I couldn't find an obvious better one. Article is about a Kentucky protester who hung up the Governor in effigy at a protest/rally and then got fired from his job at an auto dealership for it. https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/28/us/man-fired-effigy-kentucky-governor-andy-beshear/index.html

My only comment is that his claim that his 1st Amendment rights were violated because he got fired (nope, your employer can fire you for being an asshole and the government didn't stop, you, censor you, or otherwise punish you) is typical of these self-appointed defenders of the constitution who don't have the foggiest idea what it actually says or means. Maybe I should have put this in the pet peeves thread ...

They are not freedoms without repercussions.

Increases in suicides, business closures, mortgage forfeitures, worst-ever unemployment stats, etc.

How can you compare "projected deaths" to actual deaths?
Well, you're doing the same when you claim that "this many more people will die if we lift restrictions".

Not only are the disadvantaged dying, but also the one’s suffering economically. That’s the bitch of it. Bezos and the Waltons want this to go on forever.
Yep. The was a commercial (Ace Hardware, IIRC) where the "employee" was chirping about how Ace can do what the local hardware store can't do. Well, the local hardware store can't do shit when they're fucking shutdown by authorities...

For anyone who wants a measure of the impact of C19 on those that aren’t pushing daisies, see the WSJ article about Dayton. It’s a sad look at the impact this is taking but not receiving anywhere near the coverage as the body counts.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/i-feel...urveys-coronavirus-lockdowns-toll-11590571802

To disregard those who are not sick but impacted — or suggest that because it’s difficult to measure we shouldn’t be discussing it — is either really insensitive, too narrowly focused, or ignorant. If I missed an applicable adjective, I’m open to editing the list.

Is anyone, well besides maybe one person, really doing that though?

Serious question: Do you think the actions taken so far have been to simply "flatten the curve", i.e., just to prevent hospitals from getting overwhelmed, or rather to minimize/limit the overall death toll for the duration of the pandemic?

Flatten the curve. Slow it down so hospitals can handle it . . . and, not coincidentally, therefore save more people.

Scientists: "OK everybody. There's a super deadly virus coming this way. If we don't do something, hundreds of thousands could die. I propose we attempt to flatten the curve, to see if we can slow it down a bit."
Dumb Dumbs: "You heard them, guys. The absolute second that curve goes more sideways than upways, we're entitled to spike that bitch back up again!"
Scientists: "Well, no.....that's not at all what we said. This is just the initial plan....and there's no real time table on how long it makes sense to keep the curve flattened..."
Dumb Dumbs: "Nuh uh! You said it. No take backs."

Obviously "Projections" are guesses not facts. They are not equal.
It's not a winning argument.
