COPLEY - This is the time of year when Copley has to be more than a one-player team.
That happened Friday night, when star back Delone Carter got plenty of help as the Indians (9-2) edged Parma Normandy 21-14 in a Division II regional quarterfinal at Copley.
Carter rushed for 173 yards on 28 carries and scored all three touchdowns, including the game-winner on a dazzling effort in the fourth quarter.
But this victory belonged to others, such as quarterback Jason Borchik, receiver Brian Jones, defensive back David Arnold and defensive lineman Mike Nitz.
``Everybody contributed,'' said Carter, who has scored 46 touchdowns this season. ``We are a team. We showed that tonight.''
The Copley defense has struggled at times this season, but it shut down Normandy much of the night, especially in the clutch. The Invaders were bigger than the Indians, but managed just 218 yards and saw their hope for an upset end on an interception by Arnold at the Copley 32 with 1:16 remaining.
``We swarmed to the ball and we outhit 'em,'' said Nitz, a senior. ``When we needed to make a play, we did it. We used our quickness.''
Borchik completed 7-of-13 passes for 106 yards, with Jones leading the way with four catches for 46 yards. Arnold had the late interception and recovered a fumble in the first quarter that helped Copley lead 7-0.
``Normandy is a big, physical football team,'' said Copley coach Dan Boarman, whose Indians will play Tallmadge next Friday at a site to be determined. ``We hung in there with them and a lot of guys made plays.
``Being a team means you make plays when you are called upon. We did that tonight.''
Still, the one constant for the Indians all season has been Carter, a candidate to be named the top player in Ohio. He had touchdowns runs in each of the first two quarters to stake Copley to a 14-7 lead at halftime.
With the score tied at 14-14 in the fourth quarter, Copley drove 75 yards in 10 plays for the winning score, which came on a twisting, turning, 21-yard run by Carter with exactly seven minutes left. Five Normandy players had legitimate shots to tackle him -- and none did -- on the game-winning run.
``He is the real deal,'' said Normandy coach Rich Turner, whose team finished 8-3. ``I am just glad he is graduating.''
Normandy had two possessions after that, but lost the ball on downs in the first one and saw its hopes end on the Arnold interception on the second.
Copley scored quickly when Carter swept over left tackle from 3 yards at 6:24 of the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery by Arnold at the Normandy 40.
Normandy countered with a 5-yard touchdown run by Joe Dzurisin on the first play of the second quarter to tie the score at 7-7.
Later in the quarter, the Indians went 91 yards in 12 plays to go ahead 14-7. The touchdown was a 12-yard run by Carter in which he broke two tackles. Borchik hit key passes of 19 and 13 yards to Jones to keep the drive alive.
Just before the half, Normandy drove to the Copley 12, but a sack by Nitz moved the Invaders back, and Mitch Boyer missed a 41-yard field goal.

Indians coach Boarman knows mistake-free game needed against undefeated Tallmadge

It is not an official part of the Copley game plan this week, but the Indians might not be able to win without it.

``We have to play a perfect football game to beat them,'' Copley coach Dan Boarman said about his team's Division II regional semifinal Friday at Barberton against unbeaten Tallmadge. ``We have to be mistake-free.''

The Indians have had a season to remember in their own right, going 9-2, tying for second place in the Suburban League and reaching the state playoffs for the fourth consecutive year and seventh time in eight years.

But they will be playing a Tallmadge team that is 11-0, won the Suburban League title and finished second in the final state poll.

``They have run the gamut, beating everybody they have seen,'' Boarman said. ``They are the top dog.''

One of those victories for Tallmadge came at Copley on Sept. 23 by a score of 25-13. Being in the same league and in the same region means the rematch does not come as a surprise.

``We knew it was going to come to this, that we would see them again,'' said junior defensive back David Arnold, who had a key fumble recovery and last-minute interception last Friday in a first-round victory over Parma Normandy 21-14. ``What we have to do is play better this time.''

In that game, Tallmadge held a 300-99 margin in total yardage and held the area's leading rusher and scorer, Delone Carter, to 38 yards on the ground.

That result, when combined with a 10-7 triumph for Tallmadge over Copley last season in a regional final, adds another dimension to Friday's meeting.

``They know us, we know them. It's a big challenge for our kids,'' Boarman said.

Carter, who has rushed for 2,613 yards and scored 46 touchdowns in 2005, said the offense cannot be one-dimensional this week.

``Hopefully, we can do something different, so it will be a different result,'' said Carter, who has given an oral commitment to Syracuse.

The winner moves into the final eight -- and will play the Hoban-Willoughby South survivor next Friday -- while the loser begins a long offseason.

``This is what you live for as a player and coach,'' Boarman said. ``You want to be in games like this.''

Teams wary of revenge, balance

Thursday, November 10, 2005 Tim Rogers
Plain Dealer Reporter
Tallmadge coach Joe Vassalotti fears Copley running back Delone Carter and the revenge factor.

Copley coach Dan Boarman fears Tallmadge's overall balance and the hidden factor.

It should be one heck of a game.

"It doesn't get any better than this," said Boarman. "This is the best. These are the games you work hard all year for. These are the games everyone, players and coaches, hope and pray they get to participate in. I feel blessed."

The game is Friday's Division II regional semifinal between the Suburban League rivals in Barberton's Rudy Sharkey Stadium. It is the second year in a row the two have met in a playoff game. Tallmadge won last year, 10-7, and this year's regular-season game, 25-13.

"Any time you play a team with a kid like Delone, you have to be concerned," said Vassalotti. "He is the kind of kid who scares you every time he touches the ball because he can take it the distance. Plus, I'm sure they have a payback in mind."

Though Carter has rushed for 2,440 yards this season, he only had 38 against the Blue Devils.

"That's a testament to their defense," said Boarman. "But I think their biggest strength is their balance. They have so many ways to hurt you. Everyone knows about [quarterback] Allen Price, [tailback] Jamel Miller and [wide receiver] Kyle Harrison, but they have a bunch of other kids, like [Tommy] Fortner, who can hurt you."

Copley 75,
Barberton 26
Defensive back Nick Louis returned two interceptions for touchdowns to ignite a 35-point surge that carried the host Indians (4-2, 3-0) to a Suburban League win. David Arnold scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 39-yard reception with 2:36 left in the first half to put Copley ahead 19-6. But Barberton (3-3, 0-3) pulled within 19-13 on Steven Pitts' second touchdown reception in the first half with 49 seconds left in the second quarter. Louis broke open the game in the third quarter. He ran 49 yards with an interception to score 23 seconds into the second half. Louis later added a 50-yard return as the Indians boosted their lead from six points to 41.
