Cooper, Spielman, & Otis for HoF

"If he wins a few more scUM games, a few more bowl games, and maybe throw in a NC, he would be considered one of the greatest coaches in tOSU history."

I don't mean to pick on you, dude, but this statement strikes me as funny. Couldn't we say the same thing about Wes Fesler?

I can see the job progress report with the AD now: "Hey, look, I know I'm 12-26 over the last 4 seasons, but I was only a few scUM wins, a couple of bowls, and a NC away from having a hell of a run..."

Fesler was 21-13-3 while at OSU went 0-3-1 against scUM and only went to 1 bowl game. (1950 Rose Bowl which they won.) Pushing his scUM record to 2-2 makes him 23-11-3. Hardly outstanding.

Do the same for Cooper and his record goes to 118 - 36 - 4. He would still be OSU's coach (unless he retired on his own.) IMO

I was actually being sarcastic about Fesler. I guess my point is of course he would still be coach if he had Earle Bruce's record against scUM and would have won one of those titles he should have, but he didn't...and many believe it was his fault. There was also the notable 1998 collapse to throw in there too. There is a contingent who thinks that the scUM games and Bowl games are everything, and a contingent who believes they are important but not a true (or only) measure of a coach at OSU. It is obvious which contingent won out.

I see your point, I guess I am one of the people that thinks that losses reflect more on the team than the coach.

Here's CFBnews's take on the players that should get in:

http://www.cfbnews.com/2005/News/Hall_of_Fame.htm

CFN's 15 Who Must Be Elected
1. Lawrence Taylor, North Carolina, LB, 1977-80
2. Chris Spielman, Ohio State, LB, 1984-87
3. Mark May, Pittsburgh, OT, 1977-80
4. Charlie Ward, Florida State, QB, 1989, 1991-93
5. Anthony Davis, USC, RB, 1972-74
6. Ron Simmons, Florida State, NG, 1977-80
7. Benny Blades, Miami (FL), S, 1985-87
8. Mike Rozier, Nebraska, RB, 1981-83
9. Thurman Thomas, Oklahoma State, RB, 1984-87
10. Eric Dickerson, SMU, RB, 1979-82
11. David Williams, Illinois, WR, 1982-85
12. Joe Washington, Oklahoma, RB/KR, 1972-75
13. Cornelius Bennett, Alabama, LB, 1983-86
14. Jim Dombrowski, Virginia, Offensive Tackle, 1982-85
15. Anthony Thompson, Indiana, RB, 1986-89

Pretty good list, with the exception of tool-boy May. I can remember all of those guys playing, except for Dombrowski. I'd also like to see Kern and Otis make it, of course.

For coaches, it's surprising but Cooper has a pretty good shot; he's second in wins to Don Nehlen and second in winning % to Pat Dye.

If Earle Bruce was a HOFer, than Coop was as well.

What does the fact that Alberts and May are tools in the booth have to do with their HOF credentials?
Sounds to me like the annual "Art Modell for HOF" debate here in Cleveland. But I have nothing new to add, so (for once) I'll shut up.

And I agree about Alberts and May. I don't remember either of them playing. I greatly dislike them as commentators, dislike many of their opinions (not just about tOSU), but if their playing careers reflect HOF quality, let 'em in. Unless, of course, they pulled a Pete Rose, of some kind, after their careers.

It shouldn't. And I don't care if May gets in, he was a very good player. My 'tool' comment related to his on-air performance.

And Trev was a pretty good LB at Nebraska. And he's not as worthless as May on ESPN.

Mandarich shouldn't get in because of the steroids
Dickerson shouldn't get in because he was payed big bucks while at SMU
I agree with almost all of CFBnews picks - but if A Davis (he should) and A Thompson (questionable) get in, then Otis should as well.
Kern should definitely get in - I'll be there's other option / single wing QBs in there who didn't put up big passing numbers.
Spielman - 2 time AA, 3 time all B10, is a shoo-in

I'm sure they will induct the freakin hick but here are some random thoughts as to why they shouldn't.

-1990 vs scUM, we have the ball late in the game in our own territory and it's 4th and 1. Dipshit decides to go for it and, to ensure utter failure, calls for an option. Needless to say it gets stuffed, scUM takes over on our side of the field and kicks the game winning FG as time expires. Dipshit then proceeds to lose to Air Force in the Bowl game setting a precedent for what will forever be know as "pulling a Cooper"(season ending loss to scUM follwed by disinterested loss to vastly inferior Bowl opponent).

- It took him 6 years to notch his first win vs scUM.

-If you want to play woulda coulda shoulda with his scUM and Bowl losses how about this; Take away 1995-1998 when he racked up big win totals while underachieving with superior talent and his career mark is 142-72-6 for a whopping .645 win %.

-Take those same 4 years away and his career mark at OSU is 60-32-4 (.625).

-In addition to his paltry 2-10-1 mark vs scUM he was 0-2-1 vs his main rival(Arizona) while at ASU. Thats a 2-12-1 record in big rivalry games(insert "choke" emoticon here).

-5-8 career mark in Bowl games(insert it again).

-All those "championships" at Tulsa? He coached there for 8 years and had a 6-5 record 3 times and a 3-8 record once. Never undefeated and the pattern is pretty much the same as what he did to OSU. Losing record his first year, couple of good years towards the end then goes in the tank(6-5) his last year.

-His time at ASU, you say? 8-4, 10-1-1, and 7-4-1. Hardley the stuff of legend.

So to put his career in perspective its 8 years at Tulsa with a .647 win % follwed by 3 years at ASU in which he never beats his rival but has one magical year and wins the Pac 10 anyway. Someone at OSU is dumb enough to hire him based on this and he once again puts up a pedestrian .625 win % around a great 4 year run.

1 great year at Tulsa: 10-1 in 1982
1 great year at ASU: 10-1 in 1986
4 great years at OSU(sorta) 1995-1998.

His total wins may say HOF, but he'll always be just another dipshit redneck to me.

As Kevin Buck pointed out, Lone Star Dietz had a suboptimal career progression but was finally put on the ballot. A teammate of Jim Thorpe on the legendary Carlisle Indian school teams, Dietz turned around the Washington State program in 1915, won the 1916 Rose Bowl, and had another undefeated team in 1917. The ballot doesn't mention that his 1918 Mare Island Marines went undefeated and, after a grueling playoff schedule, lost the 1919 Rose Bowl to the Great Lakes Navy team that featured George Halas, Paddy Driscoll, Jimmy Conzelman and Charley Bachman, three of whom are in the NFL HoF. Also not mentioned is that Lone Star coached the Redskins in 1933-34 and is at the center of the naming controversy. More information can be found at www.LoneStarDietz.com.
