Take issue, Sen. McCain tells Ohio State graduates

By William Hershey

Staff Writer

COLUMBUS — U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Sunday issued a call to argue to graduating Ohio State University students, especially about divisive issues such as the war in Iraq.

"It is more than appropriate, it is necessary that even in times of crisis, especially in times of crisis, we fight among ourselves for the things we believe in," McCain said to applause from the commencement crowd of 35,000 in Ohio Stadium.

"It is not just our right, but our civic and moral obligation."

McCain unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for president in 2000. His speech is one of several graduation addresses he has given as he considers another presidential campaign in 2008.

Although McCain has not announced his candidacy, Christopher Duncan, chairman of the political science department at the University of Dayton, said it's "absolutely" certain he will run.

"I think John McCain honestly and truly believes the country needs him," Duncan said.

McCain supported going to war in Iraq and said that he still believes the "benefits of success will justify the costs and risks we have incurred."

"But if an American feels the decision was unwise, then they should state their opposition and argue for another course ... I would not respect you if you chose to ignore such a responsibility," said McCain, a Navy pilot who spent 5½ years as a prisoner after being shot down during the Vietnam War.

McCain also said Americans should unite in attempting to end the genocide in the Sudan's Darfur region.

University officials said that the 7,643 degrees awarded was the most ever.

McCain was scheduled to hold a fundraiser in Columbus Sunday evening for Republican U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine's re-election campaign. DeWine of Cedarville is running against U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon.
