Confederations Cup - Who wins?

Soccer fan, Steve?

The fans there seem to be very into the game, even when their team isn't on the pitch. The World Cup there next year should be very exciting.

People here love football (soccer). I like rugby and cricket better. The new stadia are stunning...

The United States get through to the semis, which is pretty good considering Brazil and Italy were in our group. It wasn't pretty, but we're through along with Brazil.

Spain cruised in the other group while host South Africa was set up to advance, only having to beat out Iraq and New Zealand to do it.

The Americans reward is a date with powerhouse Spain in the semis on Wednesday. South Africa hosts Brazil in the other.

Hell of a match this morning between South Africa and Spain.

RSA sub Mphelo scored in the 73rd for a 1-0 lead that lasted until late in regulation. Spanish sub Dani Guiza deflated the hopes for Bafana Bafana, first with a low, hard kick that snuck through two defenders and inside the near post in the 88th and only moments later with an innocuous looking soft cross that floated off the far post and into the net for a 2-1 lead for Spain. In the 3rd stoppage minute, RSA drew a free kick from well outside the box that Mphelo smoked into the upper left-corner to tie it at 2 and send it into extras.

In the first 15 minutes extra period, RSA had a couple of beautiful chances stopped by the Spanish keeper, Casillas, but then got lucky late in the first extra when the refs opted not to call a hand-ball in the box on an RSA defender off of a header. Looked like a poor call to me.....

Spain scored early in the 2nd extra period off a free kick to the far post that the keeper was tricked a bit on. Tailing away from him with a couple Spaniards cutting in, the ball went by both cutters and into the net while Khune was frozen by the possible deflection. Bafana Bafana mustered no real chances after that as Spain shutdown and played keep away for the 3-2 victory.

Fantastic effort by your boys, Steve.

19/1 odds and no one has money on us in our first ever "world" final.

While disappointed in blowing the second half lead versus Brazil the fact that our team made it to that point is another sign of growth in our program. We beat Spain and scared the hell out of Brazil. Our guys will know they can play with anybody now.
