Computer vs. Console Gaming

let the debate continue here...

Anyway, I do both. It really goes in cycles for me. When the new consoles come out the graphics are comparable to PC, and I tend to slow down on PC games. Then after a few years I upgrade the PC and tend to do more PC gaming.

For sports games I stick exclusively to consoles. The PC versions for EA games are awful. Consoles are also good for renting games. Other than the few console exclusive games, it's all PC. I have a gaming mouse and a gaming keyboard that make complex games much more fun. I also like being able to game in 1920x1200.

The biggest negative right now for the PC is all the pirating that is going on. Crytek has already announced they will no longer do PC only games because of the pirating issue. It has been reported that about 50% of the people that play COD4 on PC are using pirated versions. All this leads to less and less PC only games, which tend to be cutting edge visually and much more complex.

Either way, I do both. Right now I am in my PC gaming mode for the majority of games since I have a top of the line gaming computer. The graphics blow away the consoles. Yet I will still console game here and there.

Let the debate continue.

For sports, console. Everything else, PC - and it's not even close.

You can do so much more with PC. User created content has actually ended up creating some fantastic games (specifically games related to Half-Life). It's really not close for me, although I play more console games because I don't have my desktop at my apartment. I have 27 games for XBox, and aside from Madden (08 and 09), NCAA 07, Rockband, and two Burger King games, I'd rather have all of the others on PC.

And of the PC games I do have, I've bought them all. :)

What makes anyone think that if they stop making PC games, the pirating community will roll over and die is beyond me. The PS3 and 360 are already PC's. If they already had stopped making PC games, they would be complaining about the piracy on the PS3 and 360 right now. I think they no longer want to make PC games is so they can officially charge for all DLC without any complaints from people who never paid for that stuff before. I can officially see a day when they charge to patch a game. The piracy issue is a good excuse to do what most game companies have been wanting to do.

When new consoles finally supported HD output they may have been able to hold a candle to the current line-up of computer options.

Fact is, console hardware is significantly behind when it is being produced.

I remember the first XboX release, it was suppose to carry 128mb of system RAM so you could run a game and de-bugging mode at the same time. However it was cut back to 64mb in favor of production costs.

They're primary gpu was an FX series (5200?) - and anyone intelligent here should know how horrid that series was. I bought a 5800U and 5950 regrettably.

The R500 (Xeno) is probably the only console GPU I'd consider being ahead of the curve. - only because it was a shadow of the USA design future hardware would be using.

A console is all about grab n go. However if you have a few moments to spare, a PC is no different.
The big reason EA games suck for PC is their incomplete upon launch. They like to rush their products out then patch later... bad philosophy.

Sports games are great though. I have an Air-flo controller and an Xbox 360 controller. So the difference between Madden on the console and Madden on the PC is pretty much zilch.

edit: The other reason I use a PC. Consoles have missed some of the best games in history - StarCraft, Half-Life (1&2, xbox version sucked) Warcraft series
Command & Conquer, Dawn of War, Battlefield 1942, Doom, Diablo, Age of Empires, Rome Total War, Mechwarrior 2 and Company of Heroes.

The only games I use my console for is sports games. And I do that only because they don't produce them for the PC.

I play only NCAA sports games. (i.e. NCAA Football and NCAA Baseball)

I do the vast majority of my gaming on the PC though. Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword is easily the game that gets 80% of my gaming time.

I prefer the PC, but have a Wii for some party gaming, and will soon get a PS3 because neither NCAA football or Madden are available on PC this year. Otherwise I would get a game controller for my PC and not bother with consoles other than the Wii.

For me, I always went to the consoles for platformers, adventure games, and sports sims, and used the PC for FPS and strategy/RPG gaming. Lately, however, I've gotten away from PC gaming entirely and have gone to the PS3 for my FPS since I have a BT keyboard, mouse, and headset for that, and get my strategy/RPG fix on the DS.

The DS just kicks all kinds of ass for RPGs, since the biggest problem inherent in them -- the time sink of sitting in front of the TV or PC for 200+ hours -- goes out the window thanks to the DS's portability.

I can get sooo much gaming done now while I'm on the shitter!

What good FPS's are out for the PS3? I'm thinking of getting one (PS3 that is). Also, how well does the mouse/keyboard combo work?

UTIII works w/ the keyboard and mouse on the PS3, and that's what I play most (well, used to play, when I had the time), as I've always been a huge fan of the franchise. The other game that gets most of my attention on the PS3 is Warhawk, and that comes with a bluetooth headset.

Last year, when I got the PS3, I picked up the Logitech MediaBoard Pro soon after. My wife then bought me the VX Nano Laser Mouse for Christmas, along with UTIII. Its a small notebook mouse, but it and the keyboard are easy for me to handle while sitting in the recliner. The two matching recliners in our living room are overstuffed with big plushy arms, so I can run the mouse across that surface and not even need a mouse pad or some-such when playing.

It's a nice setup for shooters, since I get the precision of PC controls and the benefit of playing on my 46" 16:9 HDTV from 10-15 feet away.
