Comparisons between LSU v OSU offensive personnel

Nordberg

Heisman Candidate
Hello Everyone,

I have been thinking of writing this for about a week or so. I understand that some decisions in this will seem subjective, but I will try to be as objective as possible. I will try to provide up-to-date stats per player, in order to differentiate the positions. This thread is going to focus on the comparisons of LSU?s & OSU?s offense. I have done the same comparisons with the defenses as well. These will be comparisons on strictly 1st team depth charts. These athletic media guides differ, but I tried to take what was given to me and create the same for both sides. Let me know what you think?if you agree/disagree with some picks, let us know.

Here is the websites that I used for my info:

Offense: Based off 2 wide receivers, 1 tight end, 1 running back, & 1 full back

Quarter Back

Matt Flynn; senior ? 11 Games Played/Started, 183-332 with 2233 yards, 17 TD 10 Int. Flynn ran for 207 Rushing yards with 4 rushing TDs.

Todd Boeckman; junior ? Boeckman started all 12 games, 176-273 with 2171 yards, 23 TD 12 Int. Boeckman ran for 70 rushing yards with 0 TDs. Boechman was a Davey O?brien semifinalist and leads the Big Ten in pass efficiency.

Todd Boeckman has the better passer efficiency with 6 more touchdowns, but has more interceptions. Flynn is the more mobile quarterback with more rushing yards and touchdowns. Boeckman gets a slight nod due to his passing efficiency, with fewer passes and more touchdowns.

Wide Receivers

Early Doucet; senior ? was on the Maxwell Award watch list. Doucet is a ?go-to? receiver who was sidelined for 5 weeks with an injury. Doucet is 7th in career receptions (148) and 10th in career receiving yards (1863). Doucet played only 8 Games played 45 receptions 445 yards, 4 TDs.

Brian Robiskie; junior ? was a Biletnikoff semifinalist. Robiskie is the #1 Wide Receiver and played and started all 12 games. Robiskie?s career numbers are 80 receptions for 1281 yards. This season Robiskie has 50 receptions for 885 yards and 10 TDs.

Doucet is a very good receiver, but unfortunately was injured during the year. Robiskie has 5 more catches but double the yards and touchdowns. Robiskie has the better numbers, but don?t be surprised if Doucet has a great game.

Brandon LaFell; sophomore ? Tied with Doucet as the team?s leading receiver. LaFell has played in all 12 games has 44 receptions for 576 yards, 3 TDs. LaFell has 1 Rush for 18 yards and a TD.

Brian Hartline; sophomore ? Hartline has started 11 out of 12 games this season, but has played in all games. Hartline has 46 receptions for 619 yards, 5 TDs. Hartline has 5 rushes for 40 yards.

These two receivers are almost a wash. Hartline has a slight lead on yards and touchdowns. Overall, these two are going to be important for both teams to get into the game in order to open things up for other people on the offences.

Tight End

Richard Dickson; sophomore ? Dickson is the 4th leading receiver by playing all 12 games with 26 catches for 316 yards and 3 TDs.

Rory Nicol; junoir ? Nicol is the 4th leading receptions receiver by playing all 12 games with 16 receptions for 84 yards and 0 TDs.

Nicol has been a solid part of the OSU offense this year. Dickson has the better numbers and should not be ignored. The nod would have to go to Dickson because has more catches yards and touchdowns.

Running Back

Jacob Hester; senior ? Hester is arguably the heart and soul of the Tiger offense. Hester is a very versatile back by playing both tailback and fullback. He has been labeled as one of the best receiving running back in the country. He has 3 100+ yard games this season. Hester?s last fumble was back in 2004 against Georgia. He has over 300 carries without a lost fumble. Hester has played all 12 games this season with 181 attempts 897 yards and 11 TDs. Hester has 12 catches for 101 yards and 1 TD.

Chris Wells; sophomore ? Wells is a very important part, and is arguably the main threat for OSU offense. He has 8 100+ yard games, with 2 games of 220+. Wells has started all 12 games this season with 254 attempts 1518 yards and 14 TDs. Wells has 5 catches for 21 yards.

This would have to be the hardest position to differentiate. When a team needs 2-3 yards, Hester is an automatic lock. Hester being a solid back that has a nose for how many yards he needs for a first down, and almost never fumbles. Wells is more explosive with 8 100+ yard games. However, Wells has a tendency to fumble. Having about double the yards and more 100+ yard games, the advantage would have to be Wells.

Full Back

Quinn Johnson; sophomore ? Johnson is a solid fullback that is known for his hard hitting and superb blocking skills. Johnson has played in all 12 games. Johnson has only 1 catch for 9 yards. Johnson is known for is great blocking.

Dionte Johnson; senior ? Johnson is a solid fullback that is known for his hard hitting and superb blocking skills. Johnson has played in all 12 games. Johnson has 1 rush for -1 yard. Johnson is known for is great blocking.

This position is a wash. Both Johnson?s are excellent blockers and leaders on the team. They both didn?t run the ball, but are great at protection and opening up the offence.

Offensive Line:

I didn?t have the same stats for both teams. LSU gave more stats on Pancake blocks and such. OSU didn?t give any of those stats. Based off of this, I will try to pick on the experience of each position.

Left Tackle

Ciron Black; sophomore ? Black has started 25 consecutive games. He is credited with 50 knockdowns and 5 pancake blocks. Black has back-to-back 11 knockdown performances against Florida and Kentucky.

Alex Boone; junior ? Boone has 22 career starts on the offensive line. Boone was on the second team all-Big Ten team and is a 3rd year starter.

Boone has been named to 2nd team all-big ten team. Black has a 25 game consecutive start streak. The nod would have to go to Black because of the consecutive game start streak.

Left Guard

Herman Johnson; sophomore ? Johnson has started 21 consecutive games. He can also move to right tackle if necessary. Johnson is credited with 46 knockdowns and 2 pancake blocks.

Steve Rehring, junior ? Rehring has 22 career starts on the offensive line, and is a 2nd year starter.

Johnson has started 21 games, Rehring has started 22 games. This would almost be a wash due to a one game differential.

Center

Brett Helms; junior ? Helms was on the Rimington Award watch list. Helms has started 23 games and has a team high 56 knockdowns and 4 pancake blocks. He had a season high 12 knockdown blocks in the win over Florida

Jim Cordle, sophomore ? Cordle was on the Rimington watch list. Cordle is new to the starting position this season.

Cordle is a 1st year starter this season. Both, Cordle & Helms were on the Rimington Award watch list. Helms has started 23 games and therefore has the advantage.

Right Guard

Lyle Hitt; sophomore ? Hitt is new to the starting position this season. He won the starting role this past spring and fall camp. He is credited with 40 knockdown and 2 pancake blocks.

Ben Person, junior ? Person is new to the starting position this season.

Both Person and Hitt are new to the starting line this season. This season is a wash due to this reason.

Right Tackle

Carnell Stewart; senior ? Stewart is LSU?s starter at right tackle. He is credited with 35 knockdown and 5 pancake blocks to date.

Kirk Barton; senior ? Barton was on the Outland watch list. Barton is the most experienced Buckeye. Barton has been in the starting lineup for 39 games.

Stewart looks to be a 1st year starter this season. Barton was on the Outland watch list and is the most experienced Buckeye. The advantage has to go with Barton.

Overall:

OSU -- The Buckeyes have a slight advantage at quarterback position. The Buckeyes have a slight advantage at the wide receiver position as well. Wells is the more explosive running back and the full back position is mainly for blocking purposes. Look for the Buckeyes to run the ball to the left side of the line, due to the fact that they have more experience there. Both teams have 2 new starters on the line and 3 veterans.

LSU ? The Tigers have a distinct advantage at the Tight end position that cannot be ignored. The Tigers have a very reliable running back that can be very dangerous in short yardage situations. The left side of the Tiger line is very experienced. Look for the Tigers to run the ball to the left or up the middle behind that experienced O-line.

Whats so funny about Boeckman being rated ahead of your qb?? Personally I also gave LSU the slight Edge, but if the first 10 game Boeckman shows up I think Boeckman is actually slightly better than what you have. The numbers for a qb tells a lot. The fact that Boeckman has a better completion %, pass eff., more TD's, less attempt, and he also have very good measures for a QB. He also isn't as statue like in the pocket as most assume either, he can run the ball if he really needs to.

From a pure QB standpoint yup Boeckman is better than Flynn. Better as a dual threat? No, definatly not... but the title of his position is QUARTERBACK. They pass the ball, and lead their teams. Both Flynn/Boeckman excell at leading their teams but Boeckman does distrubute the ball better.

50 yards passing against the same team RIPPPED by App State??? That is pretty damn nasty? Seriously, was he hurt?

ummmmmm not that LSU ever plays north of Kentucky but you do realize the Ohio State Michigan game was played in a rain and sleet storm right???

It was cold, snowing/raining, the field was wet, and Beanie was running the ball well? Why would we pass the ball... seriously thats another thing that Boeckman has over Flynn IMO. Flynn had Ideal conditions most of the time, but Boeckman has had a couple games where the conditions weren't great (Penn State/Michigan).

I mean we started off doing both passing/running. Then on two straight plays Boeckman fumbles the ball when no one is near him cuz of the wetness, and then he slips with no one around him as he's dropping back. You add those two plays on the first drive with another fumble (no one near him again), and a Late illadvised INT and you'll understand that it was stupid and moronic to throw the ball that day.

Flynn's 70 yds (8-19 1 td 1 int) against SC says hello. Or only breaking the 150 yd barrier in 1 out of his first 6 games.

Boeckman did jam his hand late against Wisconsin, but excuses are lame. BTW, it was obvious to any observer that OSU killed the clock for the entire 2nd half.

Dude Todd does not attempt many passes? I am not sure you can say he is a better passer than Flynn. Actually they look about the same in that department so it comes down to running and game management. Flynn has the edge in both those departments...

Boeckman has the better arm and deep ball....

It's about even honestly, but Boeckman will be healthy whereas Flynn is at best questionable right now.

I give you that, lets move to RP if Flynn cannot go, Boeckman has experience but RP is a better passer, runner and is championship game tested. LSU has advantage in the QB area...

Todd: 176 comp 274 att for 2171 Yards, 23 TD, 12 Ints
Matt: 183 comp 332 att for 2233 Yards, 17 Td's, 10 Ints

Close enough.

haha you just proved my/our point. Yes Boeckman does not throw the ball as much but yet he has better numbers? He's more efficient and steady with the ball as far as throwing.

As far as game management..... boeckman has been doing that all year. He's not asked to win the game most of the time (he did a couple times though) but he manages our offense quite well. When you run the ball as frequent as OSU does you dont' get many shots, and when you get them you better connect which he has done so far this year.

Like I've said I think LSU doesn't have the best qb but they do have the best situation. What I mean is I like boeckman over both flynn/perilloux but combined I like what both flynn/perilloux can do. I think we have the best individual but LSU has the best as a whole. Both LSU qb's bring something to the table. However stating flynn is a better passer than boeckman is a JOKE. I could maybe understand Perilloux but even he hasn't had nearly the attempts that Boeckman does so he can't even compare.

Yeah so did Ken Dorsey in 2002 over Craig Krenzel.....

It's not that big a difference in the first place and you are completely overrating Flynn and completely underrating Boeckman.....

This is probably because you haven't seen Boeckman play more than once or twice whereas I'VE SEEN Flynn play just about every single game except the La Tech game and SEC championship.

So you're saying a QB who couldn't beat out flynn is better than Boeckman?? Why? Because he can run and throw? Wow......

How can you honestly say Ryan is a better passer when he has no where near the gametime that Boeckman has? You say he's championship game tested? Try going through a 12 game season in cold weather, knowing it's going to be hell to throw the ball, and knowing your team needs you at your sharpest day in and day out.... Ryan has woke up 9 times on gameday mornings knowing he'll only be holding a clip board. Once Ryan actually starts more than 2-3 games and gets around 12 starts under his belt then maybe you will have a point but until then it's kinda crazy stating that a backup is better than our starter.. Thats like me saying Brandon Saine our Running back is better than anythign you have because he's fast.... I mean he's played in a handful of games and contributres from time to time?? So Does that mean he's better than Hester? No, it does not....Brandon doesn't have the game time to prove it so I wouldn't say such a thing.

YES, RP is faster and more athletic....but then again Antonio Henton our back up might be faster than RP? So does that make him better? NO because theres more to it than running around.
