Comparing Power5 Teams in the 21st Century

Minnesota, Purdue, Illinois, IU...

This thread reminds me of a system I came up with to determine teams' successes based on BCS bowl results. Obviously, I was only keeping track through the 1998 season, and I posted the results here somewhere. But in a nutshell, a team got 3 points for winning a BCS bowl game, 1 point for losing a BCS bowl game (I was implying that it was better to make it to a big bowl game and lose it than to not make it at all), and if that game were to be the national championship game, points were doubled. (6 points for a win and 2 for a loss; basically, winning a non-championship BCS game was better than losing the championship game.) After 16 years, Ohio State had the most points. 26 or 29, or something. (I didn't take away the Sugar Bowl win because F the NCAA - I didn't take away any of USC's games, so I feel justified in that decision.)

I've started a new system for the playoffs. 1 and 3 for losing and winning the "New Years Six" games that aren't playoff games, 2 for losing a playoff bowl game, 4 for winning it, but losing in the NC game, and 6 for winning the NC game. Any guesses who's winning after 2 years?

Quick math says Bucks over Bama, 13-12?

I'm thinking Bucks over Bama 9-8 but I think Bama with a championship and 2 playoff appearances is more impressive than the Bucks' championship and missing the playoff.

To argue against that, Ohio State by missing the playoff and winning the fiesta finished 4th in the final AP Poll this year, Last year by losing in the first round Bama finished 5th. So while very close the polls gave the Bucks a slight edge.

True. But I think Bama finishing outside of the top 4 last year was rediculous. They lost to the eventual national champs and many would argue that the Sugar Bowl last year was the real championship game. I'd say Bama was the second best team last year and definitely not the fifth best. They were part of a final group of 4 teams deemed to be the best 4 teams in the country. Once you make the final 4 teams, and this is just my opinion, you should finish there. It makes me sick arguing for anything Alabama but they won a championship in one year and lost a playoff game to the eventual champs in the other. The Buckeyes won a championship one year and missed the playoff altogether the other. Even though the Buckeyes finished the year with a win in the Fiesta, if you asked any fan or player at the end of the regular season which they would rather have, a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta, or a shot at defending the title in the playoffs without winning it being guaranteed, I know what every single fan/player would choose. The playoff was still the goal, not a berth in a consolation game.

I wasn't sure if he meant you get 4 for winning the playoff game and 4 for losing in the championship, of if it's just 4 for winning in the playoff round and 6 for winning it all.

I had:

Ohio State: Fiesta Bowl win (3), Sugar Bowl win (4), National Title game win (6).
Alabama: Cotton Bowl win (4), National Title game win (6), Sugar Bowl loss (2).

I get where you're coming from. I looked at it as you only get one point value for the season. 2 for losing first round, 4 for losing in championship (winning first round, losing next game,) 6 for winning it all.

Do you think FSU should have stayed in the top 4 last year? or should MSU still been in the top 4 this year? Which finish would you have rather had this year? tOSU or MSU?

As for FSU? Yes. They should have been the lowest of the 4 but still #4. They were deemed one of the 4 best teams after an entire season as a body of work. One game shouldn't change all of that regardless of the outcome. Would I want the embarassment that MSU ended with this year? No. But they had a shot at a championship that the Buckeyes didn't get and I would trade them for that every single day.

Ah yes, I see that as well. :cheers:

@Zurp don't leave us hanging, dude! :urban2:

1. My scores were based on that you get one score per season. 6 for winning the championship. 4 for winning the first playoff game but losing the championship. 2 for losing the first playoff game. 3 for winning a non-playoff game (but still New Years Six), and 1 for losing a non-playoff game (but still New Years Six).
2. I get that some might prefer to make it to the playoffs and lose. I think I'd rather win the non-playoff game than lose the playoff game. Feel free to change the point totals around. I'll share my spreadsheet with all the results going back to 1998 (first year of BCS).
