Columbus Hotels & Food

CentralMOBuck

Assistant Coach
My brother and I are coming from Missouri for the Purdue game in October. What are some good hotels to look into? We're fine with staying away from the university area. We aren't going to do much other than eating and going to the game. I've heard to look in the Worthington area for a place to stay. Any specific recommendations would be excellent. Are there any places that offer shuttle or bus rides to and from the game?

Also finding a good place to eat after the game would be nice (steak, pizza, mexican foods are good with us).

Thanks!

I posted in another thread about the hotels/restaurants up Olentangy, ~1-2 miles from the Shoe. I stayed at the Varsity Inn North, up that way last year and it was great. You can park there, grab breakfast nearby and walk to the game. I'd call them and other hotels around there to see if they have rooms. It's a good area and the walk is not bad. We booked our room for this year (Purdue, same as you, no tickets yet though) back in February.

If you have transportation or don't mind a cab ride, I can recommend Schmidts Sausage Haus in German Village for night before/ evening after dinner. What's not to love about an oompah band mixing in Buckeye fight songs with traditional German stuff, along with good Beer and an all you can eat sausage and kraut buffet. Me and my wife go there whenever we are in C-bus.

Oh, and if you go to Schmidts, head over to Schmidts fudge haus, right next door. They have a fudge type that is chocolate fudge mixed with pepper, it's better than it sounds.

Stayed downtown last year in the Arena District...fun Friday night hitting some of the bars....however, was a pain in the arse getting everyone together (hungover) to be in the stadium by kickoff. Almost too far way for my liking.

This year we are trying the Fairfield by Marriott on Olentangy. Fairfield Inn & Suites Columbus OSU: Earn Rewards points and stay productive when traveling to Columbus

I stayed there about 4 years ago. Clean hotel, nice rooms, I think they have an indoor pool, and a jacuzzi. Damon's Ribs Sports Bar & Restaurant next door. Maybe 30 minute walk to Lane Ave?

***When I reserved rooms for a couple of games this year at the Fairfield OSU, places like Expedia showed no rooms available. However, by contacting the hotel directly, I was able to get rooms for both the Miami and Indiana weekends.

Hyatt in Grandview

The Hyatt is building a brand-new hotel in Grandview which would be a long walk to the stadium but there are also a lot of restaurants on Grandview Avenue which would be about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. When this project is completely finished there will be restaurants extremely close. See the link below. Yes, it will be open September 1.

If it's not too much trouble - everyone's favorite UGA fan is requesting a big of help on venturing to CBus in late January.

I'll be there for a convention the last week of the month and will be staying at the Renaissance Downtown on 3rd. The hotel looks nice enough - but I have only just driven through Columbus in the past and know very little about it.

I have minimal evening obligations after 7:00pm and don't have to be up and functioning in front of co-workers till after 9:30am each morning. Thus, I'm anxious to drink on the companies dime and wanting to eat some place that is a local landmark.

Obviously that burger place on "Man vs. Food" is an option - but is it close and/or will I break the bank with a cab ride out there?
Is there a nicer place that's local I can enjoy too? If I have to go with dumb and fussy female co-workers who hate burgers and life - I'll need to try and find a nice place but refuse on going to Chain Restaurants (like buca di beppos).

Recommendations get Rep!

Rubino's is some of the best pizza you will ever have. Period. At least that's my IMO.

German Village appears to be a quick, 2 mile cab ride from my hotel and seems to have some neat bars and restaurants. I'll probably check that out one time and see if I can get into Thurman Cafe or Schmidts (I'll be there on a Wednesday so hopefully not too crowded).

Dumb safety related question - but is it fairly safe to walk around at night?
Obviously Columbus is Gary, Indiana - but I want to make sure I avoid suggested areas.

German Village has two more excellent restaurant choices:

Between where you're staying (3rd and Gay Streets) and German Village, the small zone between Broad Street and Livingston can be a little dicey to walk. But German Village itself is very safe, and if you head north to the Short North (generally where the other good restaurants are) you should be fine on foot as well. In January, though, like most midwestern cities you'll likely find Columbus weather to be windy and cold. So taxis will be a good idea.

Please give us a review after the trip of what you think of our city - positive or not. It's good to know how visitors view us!
