Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

The playoff beards worked!

2008 MLS Champions. It's about time we won it all. I'm so proud of those guys. After playing Chicago as tough as we did, you just knew they were going to win it all.

Schelotto is the best playmaking midfielder MLS has seen in a long time. I desperately hope they can keep him and Sigi in Black & Gold next year.

Columbus had entered the MLS Cup final as resounding favorites. The Crew proved Sunday at the Home Depot Center that they're without a doubt the best team in MLS -- cruising 3-1 over the Red Bulls

Crew ponders possible losses
Expansion teams want Schmid; key players in limbo

The Columbus Dispatch

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- Crew investor-operator Clark Hunt was operating under the "midnight rule" Sunday night, citing his belief that NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer was on to something when he said a victory could be celebrated or a loss dwelled upon only until 11:59 p.m. on the day it occurred.
It's safe to say the rest of the Crew wasn't playing by any such rule after winning the first MLS Cup championship in franchise history with a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
Early in the evening, adult beverages were quaffed from the Cup trophy by players and fans during an impromptu victory party at the team hotel. The revelry continued late into the night after Clark and the Cup had both retired for the evening.

Crew fans cheer as members of the 2008 MLS Cup champions gather on the Statehouse steps for a celebration.

Crew players display their newly won MLS Cup trophy at the Statehouse.

The Crew's celebration train made another stop yesterday, this time at the Statehouse, where Gov. Ted Strickland hosted a rally celebrating the Crew's MLS Cup championship. Horns were blown, mayoral proclamations were made and photos were snapped.

It was a happy affair, tempered only by the likelihood that one of the players being celebrated will likely be lost in the Major League Soccer expansion draft today.
More important, however, might be the player the Crew will retain.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto will return for another season and could be the Crew's first designated player, a source close to both Schelotto and the team said yesterday.

The Crew lost Brad Evans in the Seattle Sounders Expansion Draft this afternoon. Kinda surprised they didn't go with Gaven or Noonan, but out of those three, I think Evans was the easiest to part with. Would not be surprised to see Adam Moffat or Noonan fill in at the center mid spot that Evans occupied between Schelotto and Carroll.

Players picked by Seattle in the Expansion Draft:
Brad Evans (Columbus Crew)
Nate Jaqua (Houston Dynamo)
Nathan Sturgis (Real Salt Lake)
Jeff Parke (New York Red Bulls)
Jarrod Smith (Toronto FC)
Khano Smith (New England Revolution)
Peter Vagenas (Los Angeles Galaxy)
Tyson Wahl (Kansas City Wizards)
James Riley (New England Revolution)
Stephen King (Chicago Fire)

Pretty underwhelmed by their draft. Shocked that Marco Velez (Toronto FC) didn't get picked. He's a future all-star defender in this league and he's still young.
