I thought it curious when they expanded the BCS bowls to 6 ... but I only just now realized... that's the exact number of game sites you'd need for an 8-team playoff (with the Final at a distinct location).
Can't help thinking that's where this is headed... whether it's 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years down the road.
All it'll take is some controversy to push it that way, and that'll happen sooner than later... especially since I expect the first couple years will involve at least 2 SEC teams in this farcical playoff.

Move it to 8, the SEC gets 2 permanent slots, Notre Dame 1, all final games at Jerry's place.

Only 2 teams for the SEC?
1. SEC Champion
2. SEC Runner-up
3. Whatever SEC team ESPN thinks got a raw deal for the fact that they weren't allowed to play in the SEC title game, due to the fact that they lost too many games, but they have to pimp the SEC so they all agree to let this team in.
4. Notre Dame, provided that they beat Navy, Pitt, Michigan State, or Purdue. If they can't beat one of those four teams, the "committee" should feel obliged to ask Notre Dame if they'd like to be in the playoffs. If the answer is "yes", then they're in. If the answer is "no", bribe them with the promise of more money until the answer is "yes".
5. Whatever "little" team that ESPN has fallen in love with at the moment. "But, Middle Tennessee State beat FAU on Tuesday night one time. What else do they have to do to prove that they belong in the playoffs?"
6, 7, and 8 - three spots for the winners of the PAC-12, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12. Basically, ESPN runs an online poll for which of those 4 teams should be left out. Vote early, clear your cookies, and vote again. Repeat. Does anyone know how to set up a bot to do that?

?? The point is that I think it's moving to 8 before the current contract is up. 6 bowl sites... 4 games for QFs, 2 games for SFs, 1 non-bowl location "at Jerry's place" as you say =)

I think we're talking past each other. I got the sarcasm (it's why I liked in the first place)... I was confused by the "move it to 8" which I read as a correction ... but rereading it now am guessing you meant it as a prelude to your next comment.

ie: "if it's going to 8, then... "
Whereas I read it as "But if you move it to 8 rather than 6, then..."

Anyway, long story short... my bad.

Given that I'd almost bet real money that this year's playoff pics are going to result in enormous controversy, with the "human element" coming strongly into question, would it be appropriate to rename the committee process "Revenge of the BCS"?

It definitely made the season different, but I think more fun, and that's what sports are about. I do love tradition, and it changes some of those, namely making early losses a lot less meaningful than they used to be, but still sometimes that didn't kill you in years past, and it also means that a lot more teams are excited late. I mean going into the CCGs, still about seven teams still had a shot. It still doesn't fix that it's hard to determine on the field who gets in, but it's always going to be subjective unless you just go conference champions, which may be more fair, but probably less exciting.

For fun, now that we know more, let's see how different formats may have played out.

Six team, conf champions +1

1. Alabama Bye
2. Oregon Bye
3. Florida State vs. 6. TCU TCU wins
4. Ohio State vs. 5 Baylor Ohio State wins

1 Alabama vs. 6 TCU Coinflip, but as far as teams looked yesterday, I would say TCU
2 Oregon vs. 4 Ohio State We shall see, both looked like best two in country yesterday, but I would say Oregon looked a little better, but it's so subjective.

So TCU vs. Oregon for championship, but then again..would a bye help or hurt. May change things. I don't think there ever should be a bye in college. So let's go eight. Power 5 champs + 3 (home team first round)

8 Michigan State at 1 Alabama Gotta think this is Bama.
7 Miss State at 2 Oregon Oregon
6 TCU at 3 Florida State Even in Tallahassee it's TCU who looked better.
5 Baylor at 4 Ohio State Shoe would be rocking love it.

So assuming reseeding, which seems like the football thing to do, you have same results as six team. Without reseeding you would have. Bama v Ohio State and TCU vs Oregon. Then we get likely the same championship game.

16 teams, just for fun, because my brain likes this stuff, first two rounds at home. Switching 15 and 16 and 11 and 10 to avoid rematch, which I assume they would do.

16 Arizona State at 1 Alabama Bama
15 Missouri at 2 Oregon Oregon
14 UCLA at 3 FSU Calling the upset, UCLA looked strong, FSU not.
13 Georgia at 4 Ohio State How fun would this be in Cbus.
12 Georgia Tech at 5 Baylor Calling another upset
11 Arizona at 6 TCU TCU
10 Kansas State at 7 Miss State Ugh, I'll go Kansas State, but ugly.
9 Ole Miss at Michigan State MSU

14 UCLA at 1 Alabama Bama
12 Georgia Tech at 2 Oregon Oregon
10 Kansas State at 4 Ohio State Man, another fun one in the Shoe, I honestly think home playoff games would be so good for the sport.
8 Michigan State at 6 TCU Call me crazy, but I think they match up real well...MSU

So bowls are Sugar MSU vs. Bama and Rose Oregon vs. Ohio State. Who knows, MSU could go on a run. Rematch with either Ohio State or Oregon could be possible.

I guess what 16 does is gives a lot of teams a shot at a run without really playing that well in the regular season, just be hot at the end, may make it too easy to get in. But that playoff would be nuts, and you still would need to go 9-3 to get in, or maybe still get left out, and then have to win two road games. So it isn't like a crappy team could get crowned. Especially when sometimes, with unequal strength of schedules, you TRULY can't tell if a 9-3 team is better than a 11-1 team.

Okay 32 team. Just kidding. I know I am crazy, but I'm still hyped up from our game. If this isn't coherent, then I'm not surprised, lol. Drinking plus crazy sleep schedule equals this crap.

Here's the thing about the bye.

It's too much of an advantage when the layoff is as long as it is between CCGs and the first round.

The teams with the bye can prepare equally for two teams for 3 weeks then a week+ to narrow the focus.

Then they have the added bonus of not having an extra game of wear under their belt late in the season.

If the first round was 10-14 days after the CCGs then the second round 10-14 days after that...

...then maybe #1 and #2 earn not having to play an opener.

I just don't see it happening when the parity just isn't there.

I have completely lost the point. seriously.
Clearly we need a playoff thread.
Based on your question whether we want to have a vote on who had the best regular season or, alternatively, whether want to have a tournament champion, I raised the comparison of NCAA men's basketball that arguably takes the second option to its logical conclusion and, in so doing, guts the regular season. That comparison has been made many times in this thread, where I have placed my answer after being shamed by Oh8ch.
