4. (2) Coldwater vs. (3) Bellville Clear Fork
DIVISION IV, REGION 14
Saturday, 7 p.m.
At Kenton Robinson Field
Records: Coldwater 11-0; Clear Fork 8-3
• Offense
Coldwater: Ross Homan has 1,112 rushing yards and 19 TDs. QB Steve Borger has thrown for 1,813 yards and 21 TDs with just two interceptions.
Clear Fork: Clear Fork is averaging 28.2 points per game. Twin brothers Andy and Chris Bailey highlight a backfield that boasts three runners with more than 600 yards apiece.
Advantage: Coldwater
• Defense
Coldwater: Homan has 157 tackles. Brady Geier has eight interceptions with one return for touchdown.
Clear Fork: Clear Fork is giving up 17 points per game.
Advantage: Coldwater
• Key Matchup — Homan vs. Clear Fork offense: The Ohio State-bound linebacker will cause a lot of problems for the Colts.
• X-Factor — Strength of schedule: The MAC is definitely a tough conference. But Clear Fork has played two teams in Division I, three in Division II, one in Division III, four in Division IV and two in Division V. Coldwater has faced just four teams in Divisions I-IV.
• Notes — Coldwater has won 24 of its last 25 games.
• Quotable
“The key is to try and control the football. You’ve got to try to keep their offense off the field if that is possible. They’re a dynamite offensive team.”
— Clear Fork coach Rick Beans

KENTON — There were many key decisions made in Coldwater’s 45-0 shellacking of Bellville Clear Fork.
According to Coldwater head coach John Reed, the biggest decision was made at the coin toss.
“One of the most important things that happened tonight was that we won the toss,” Reed said. “We were able to defer, they take the ball, we were able to kick with the wind. We stop them, short punt, score. We stop them, short punt. It really made a big difference.”
Coldwater (12-0) will face Huron in a Division IV regional final Saturday at a location to be named today.
Coldwater scored on its first four possessions of the game. On defense, the Cavaliers did not allow Clear Fork to record a first down until the second quarter. For the game, the Colts managed just six first downs (two in first half).
“I’ve been there before,” Reed said. “We decided to defend the goal in the second half, rather than to take the ball. The wind was a major factor here tonight, but I don’t think it would have changed the outcome of the ballgame.
“Our kids came out to play. From the first man to the last man that came out there, they played hard.”
Coldwater jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, five minutes into the game on its first possession. Quarterback Steve Borger (five carries, 42 yards) ran in from five yards out, capping off a 9-play, 53-yard scoring drive.
Then after a three-and-out series by Clear Fork, Coldwater struck again as Borger connected with wide-out Justin Kahlig on the first play of the series for a 33-yard scoring strike. After Trevor Stromblad’s point-after, the Cavaliers owned a 14-0 lead.
The Coldwater defense stepped it up on Clear Fork’s next offensive series. Stromblad picked off a pass from Clear Fork quarterback Nik Weirch at the 40-yard line and returned it to the 8-yard line of the Colts. Running back Ross Homan later ran it in from four yards out to push the lead to 21-0.
Coldwater added one more score before the end of the first quarter as Borger (9-of-11, 148 yards) found Brady Geier open for a 13-yard pass play for another score. The Cavaliers led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. Borger was 5-of-6 passing in the first quarter for 98 yards and two TD’s.
Homan (9 carries, 36 yards) scored his second touchdown of the game, in the second quarter to put the Cavs up 35-0 before the half. The Ohio State-bound Homan did not see any action on the offensive side of the football in the second half.
Reed said, “They (Clear Fork) ran the ball against everybody. They just never had to throw the ball, so they run it. But they just couldn’t run it (tonight). I think when you get this far along (playoffs), if you don’t have a ‘plan B,’ it’s difficult.”
Running back Tony Harlamert (10 rushes, 29 yards) went in from three yards out to push the lead out to 42-0 midway through the third quarter.
Then two minutes into the fourth quarter, Stromblad kicked a 23-yard field goal to round out the scoring.
Clear Fork head coach Rick Beans said, “They did a terrific job. That was the first time all year that we have been shut down, at least to that magnitude.
“And winning that coin-flip and being able to control that wind tonight was the key. Field position and controlling that stuff was key, but we have to respond, and we didn’t. They’re a terrific team.”
Coldwater held the Clear Fork potent running attack to 18 yards for the game. In the air, the Colts managed just 43 yards.

Beans added, “It’s going to take a whale of a team to beat them.

Anyone else going to the game? Coldwater took down Huron last year in the Regional Finals by about 14 or so. Huron is supposed to be bigger up front and better overall this year (same can be said about Coldwater).

Should be a great game. I'll say Cavs by 7.

I am thinking about going, it will be one helluva a game. I would love to see Homan in live action, but just havent got around to doing it. Do you have any idea where they would play if they won.

state semis vs somebody. they will prolly play a nice venue. i forget what the pairings are regionwise for DIV as far as state semis. i think huron can make a game out of this. not the huron from a couple years ago but still solid. i think homan will be too much though for huron at least on the offensive side of the ball. i think he is making the biggest impact for coldwater on the offensive side of things IMO

Steve Borger is the biggest impact on offense. He's thrown something like 24 Tds and only 2 picks. Also about 2,000 yards and spreads it around about as good as you can.

If they win, they'll probably play at UD's Welcome Stadium, possibly Tiffin, Troy, Piqua, etc.

Jeffcat -- that DSJ/HN game should be one for the ages. If you're old school, you're going to love it. DSJ option attack with Adam Johnson's little brother and Andrew Dewitt vs. Hardin Northern's smash-mouth 3 yards and a cloud offense.

If Coldwater wins, they will most likely play the winner of Valley View & Monroe, although they can rebracket at State Semis.

yea im guessing it will be a good game but i was hoping to see some new teams this weekend i see hardin northern and st johns all the time. im not much of a fan of either schools this year they are boring by my standards to watch as a team:! i might go watch it though because it should be a good game and hard close games are fun to watch especially when these 2 are big contenders this year. im not sure yet though. im thinking about just stayin at home and watching glenville on ONN and some college games like fresno/usc:biggrin:

Coldwater throws it into state semis

Cavs shut out Huron, 28-0, as Borger, Geier lead the way

FINDLAY | Coldwater quarterback Steve Borger's worst pass of the game left him with a sigh of relief. It left Huron exasperated.

Despite the pass going 2 yards behind receiver Brady Geier, being tipped by a defender, then going past another defender, Geier plucked it from the air and raced 85 yards for a stunning touchdown midway through the second quarter.

Huron never recovered in the Division IV, Region 14 title game as the Cavaliers posted a 28-0 win in front of about 6,000 spectators at Donnell Stadium in Findlay.

"They have such a complete team," said Huron coach Tony Legando. "Their weapons are such great athletes."

Coldwater advances to play Monroe in the state semifinals on Saturday at a site to be announced today. It's the Cavs' sixth state appearance and second straight.

Borger picked apart a Tigers' defense that was allowing just 10 points a game. He completed 18-of-25 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns (giving him 26 on the season), while running for 31 yards. With the exception of Geier's TD — and an 0-for-4 start — Borger was dead-on the rest of the way. Seven of those passes found Geier for 181 yards and two TDs.

"It was a horrible pass on my part," Borger said. "I got lucky. It was a huge sigh of relief."

Huron (11-2) would have loved a mistake like that. The Tigers were shut out for the first time this season after averaging 28 points. Despite having a mighty offensive line that averaged 250 pounds, the Tigers were outgained offensively 386-131.

Coldwater coach John Reed expressed concern the Tigers' size might wear down the Cavaliers (13-0). But the Cavs' defense constantly pressured Huron QB Nick Basting. The Tigers pushed past the Cavs' 42 just once, and that drive ended with Brady Geier's second interception of the game and 10th of the season. Ryan Geier also picked off a pass. Basting completed just 3-of-14 passes for 28 yards. The Cavs also bottled up 1,200-yard rusher Trevor Greenawalt with 56 yards on 19 carries. Borger had no such trouble. When not handing off to Ross Homan (16-70, 1 TD) he had time to survey the defense. After a scoreless first quarter, he calmly led Coldwater to 21 points in a span of 7:17. No team had scored more than 20 against Huron all season.

"Steve Borger keeps his composure as well as any high school quarterback I've seen at any level," Reed said. "You don't want to play him in pool or anything. He'll just beat you. That's the way he is."
