Coaching staffs around the Big Ten.

Many teams thrive under a coaching staff that has been in place for years. Getting acclimated to what a new coach wants and expects takes time for some players. Also a good coaching staff must work well together with no weak links. A program cannot afford to have any one person in the staff not pulling on the oars with everyone else. Coaching changes, and a revolving door of changes; can negatively affect a program as far as on the field play and recruiting.

My question is: What do you think the effect at tOSU will be? Does this hurt us or is it a non factor? For comparison this is what the current Big Ten has in place at their programs.

OSU: Heacock 10, Hazell 2, Bollman 5, Fickell 4, Daniels 5, Beckman 1, Peterson 2, D. Tressel 2.
Total: 31+ 4 with JT.

Tsun: Campbeel 11, Jackson 14, Hermann 9, Malone 3, Debord 10, English 3, Loeffler 4, Moeller 4, Stripling1.
Total: 59+10 with LLL.

Iowa: O’keefe 7, Parker 7, Aiken 7, Erb 6, Jackson 7, Johnson 7, Morgan 6, Parker 7, Wilson 4.
Total:58+6 with KF

Purdue: Chaney 9, Spack 13, Hagen 6, Anarumo 2, Bennett 5, Debesse 3, Legg 3, Mitchell 3, Samuel 1.
Total:45+8 with Tilly.

PSU: Hall 2, Bradley 26, Anderson 28, Johnson 10, Kenney 17, Mcqueary 2, Norwood 5, Paterno 11, Vanderlinden 5.
Total: 106+39 with Joepa.

Wisky: Palermo 15, White 11, Chryst 2, Bielema 2, Horton 7, Huebler 14, Lee 3, Mason 11.
Total: 65+15 with Alvee.

Minny: Ankney 5, Browning 9, Lockwood 4, Petersen 7, Adamle 9, Bailey 1, Cooks 1, Shaw 13, Tressel 1.
Total: 59+8 with Mason.

Mildcats: Brown 13, Colby 4, Dunbar 5, Fitzgerald 5, Glowik 7, Johns 2, Mcgee 2, Patton 7, Washington 2.
Total: 47+6 with Walker.

Sure there are other intangibles that play into this equation. Can to many years stifle a staff from innovations as CF evolves? A National Championship is nothing to sneeze at with just a few years as a staff, and yes a new fresh staff can be a good change.

I find the numbers Ferentz has with his staff pretty impressive. Add to that winning and recruiting it is a powerful combination. My hope is our BUCKS can do the same...
 
Ferentz has numbers b/c Iowa has been a second-tier program until very recently. Great programs simply do not keep assistant coaches around. Very few coaches are like Heacock and are not looking for a head coaching job down the road. Look what happened to USC during this offseasn if you need proof of this.

If Ferentz turns in another great year, you can be sure he'll lose an assistant or two.

Keep in mind Butch Reynolds hasn't been here at all but he's an absolutely fantastic hire and will bring in recruits and greatly improve the speed training of our team.

Also, you have to realize that if these coaches do not ever move up to other jobs, some of the time its because they are not good enough to do so.

I think most on this board would be glad to replace an assistant every 3 years if it means we are hiring top notch upandcomers like Mel Tucker (best DB coach in the land; might have stayed had the DC job opened up before the Browns one)...

Hazell is a great one and we won't be able to keep him forever, but I'd much rather him develop studs like Jenkins, Holmes, Ginn, Gonzo (and surprise draft picks Carter, Vance, etc)... and lay the groundwork for an easier start for the next assistant at that position...

I really think the main theme of having a solid coaching staff is, "having all coaches in the staff pulling on the oars." Do they work well as a unit.
Sometimes you interview for a job and think, "Wow, I think I will fit in pretty good with this bunch." Yet after time differeces in opinion, etc. change that first impression. You may become a little disgruntled and not work well with some and good with others. This sort of leaves holes in the fabric.
Time (continuity) helps fill some of these holes. Iowa seems to be doing just that. And sure your right, bigger and better jobs will be offerred to the staff and they will take it.
In Joepa's defense PSU's recuiting base has shrunk dramatically since joining the Big Ten. The Big Ten is now recruiting in the area that was once only PSU's. Think of the talent they had when they first joined the Big Ten. Now that talent is being siphoned off. (Think of tsun's forays into Ohio as an example.) So I think it has nothing to do with the coaching.

Clearly, long tenure does not necessarily equal success! It probably doesn't hurt though! Tress has made some great looking moves so we'll see.

Looking at scUM's D problems, is it coaching or players? I think coaching!

There are 11 teams, but new coaching changes at Indy, MSU, and Illinois don't make this discussion with fully or almost fully re-vamped staffs.

Tao I would have to agree with you there. Tsun has incredible talent. The staff has to know what the strengths and weaknesses of each individual player is. Then provide the proper scheme to take full advantage of those strengths. Sometimes it takes a while to mold the scheme around the talent. It can sometimes be impossible to bend the talent to a scheme it is ill-fitted for.

I believe our offense is slowly (and I mean slowly) evolving with new innovations designed with our talent in mind. Sure Tresselball will never go away, But I'm sure JT will throw some of the wrinkles his Dad tried at Baldwin-Wallace to loosen up defenses.

What I want to see on offense period is play calling in which I can't begin to guess what's coming next...

Tress has always said the "ideal" offense would be one out of the "I" formation, showing nothing but having balance between running, 200 yds a game and passing , 250 yds a game! This years numbers will be interesting! He actually likes Miami's offense!

What has killed PSU's recruiting base is the ACC, not the Big 10. scUM always recruits well in Pennsylvania, even 10 or 15 years ago-although PSU's instate recruiting has slid, I will admit. What has devastated PSU in recruiting is the rise of Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Maryland. New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia used to produce tons of great players for PSU. Now, the players are staying in-state, or the Jersey kids are going elsewhere. I was totally shocked that Derrick Williams chose PSU last year, the Terp fans were boiling mad over that.

STX I have to agree with you there. Looking at the rosters of the teams you have mentioned they have hit Pa. hard. The Big Ten has pulled some talent from that area but not to the degree of the ACC. I stand corrected.

It's kind of a scary thought of other schools coming into what's your primary recruiting haven for years and taking the talent you used to take for granted as always being there. I mean what if Ohio where carved up the same way?

Tao in responce to the offense, Tress might have to abandon the "I" he likes so much. We will see it don't get me wrong, just not as often. The talent he has here I believe will dictate that to a degree. I think we will see just how flexible Tress really is. As long as he gets the ball into the hands of the play makers I'll be happy.

The stat from above I see repeating itself is with all these teams there is a core group of coaches of about 4 with longevity to the program. For whatever reason there losses and additions it seems to be the norm to keep that continuity.

I think our biggest two "impact" asst coaches last year (i.e. most effective) were coaches Tressel has hired as "replacements" - Peterson and Hazell. Hopefully Beckman follows suit - he sounds like he is going to be a perfect fit.

In a blatant ass-kissing move, I would like to nominate Grad21 an Stx for the next 2 OSU job openings :)
