The Hagers are trying to figure out how life went off track for their teenage daughter, Windy.

They envisioned that life for the good student and promising athlete would be filled with dreams of the prom and college, but that all changed this week when Windy, 16, married her high school track coach.

"She was a dream kid," said her mother, Betty Hager. "We'd never have to worry about Windy trying to get by with something."

At South Brunswick High School in North Carolina, Windy's greatest passion was track and field.

"She just always was outside, always running, and her name's Windy ? I guess she was predestined to do love to do that," Betty said.

But that passion led her down a troubling path.

Special Attention From Coach

During Windy's freshman year, her 38-year-old track coach, Brenton Wuchae, began taking a more active interest in her, offering to give the 14-year-old rides home from practice.

"He just seemed like a genuine guy, like he was there for the kids," said Windy's father, Dennis Hager.

But the Hagers eventually grew uneasy. Their phone bills showed text messages between Wuchae and Windy as late as 2 a.m.

I don't get it. The girl wants it, the guys wants it, the parents signed the forms. Why is there outrage, and why is ABC News trying to create it?

Where did it go wrong?

About the point that you named your kid "Windy" you fucking twits.

I guess Stormy was a but too much... but... maybe you name her Breezy and she turns out to be a wuss?

For one thing, it appears, the parents say the were coerced into signing the forms through what is essentially a childish tantrum (their child refused to speak to them or have contact with them outside everyday requirements until they signed) That's called duress.

For another, at 16 it is considered highly unlikely that the girl really understands what she is feeling or what she has committed herself to. Whereas, the 40 year old coach is completely aware of those things and should not have allowed himself to become so close to, or encourage, what was then a 14 year old girl.

If the forms had not been signed under duress, and the relationship had not started at age 14, in a school, between a member of authority (teacher) over a student, it would be less "outrageous" is my guess.

Coerced by their teenage daughter? I'm not real sympathetic to these wussy parents.

Still creepy, though.

Does anyone else get the sneaking suspicion that vrbryant is merely testing the water on this subject because of a new hot girl in one of his SAT classes?

we had a similar incident that happened like this in our high school but not really to this extreme. my senior year we had one of our classmates hook up with the band director in a relationship. i think he was 30 something or along those lines, but then again our school is just wack.

I don't think that a later marriage immunizes prior statutory rape.

1) What happens to the rule that you can't be forced to testify against your spouse?

2) Is this guy related to Jerry Lee Lewis?

1)The charge of statutory rape doesn't require the participation at all of the child in question. Often it doesn't even include the parents, its a law that the state can prosecute for regardless of any one's participation or agreement should it choose.

2)Dunno.

Well, unless they like video, It might be hard to get corroboration without the partner. OTOH, I'm sure her diary and BFFs know the deal. Plus, if they text messaged (and his name isn't Karl Rove) they can get those back and read the things. What Mr. Coach liked to talk about at 2:00 am is likely veeery interesting.
