Cleveland Guardindians (2024 AL Central Champs)

Vogt has somehow managed to get Hedges up there in seemingly every critical spot this series. Bold.

2024 Hedges is to Vogt as 2016 Michael Martinez was to Francona

Other than that, I think Vogt has done about as good of a job as he can with the decision-making. I think he's used the bullpen very well and strategically pulling the starter when you need to put out the fire. Though, it was probably very unsettling to pull Bibee so early and walking Soto to get to Judge seems odd when looked in a vacuum. However, getting to a force out situation with strikeout/double play candidates due up was the best call.

It seems that those tough/crazy plays have always went the other way. That coupled with pissing away score opportunities at the plate makes for a rough series. With 2 outs and runners in scoring position, they've hit .150 and (besides Fry's Detroit Game 4 homer) they have 3 RBI. Need to start figuring out how to hit when it matters and realize that there are more than 2 outs in an inning.

That is the most alarming part of this series... the swings on pitches outside the zone.. especially the 3rd strike... Shows that nerves are peaked... and unless they can settle it down somehow, this is over

It's been like this off and on all season. Suddenly they will decided to start all stringing together good at bats, but then as suddenly as it came it turns off and they go back to hacking at anything thrown at them.

They basically got here because of a white hot first 2 months of the season. I think they went 54-50 after those first 2 months.

For the catching situation, why isn't Fry being considered?

And don't give me this arm injury bullshit. Fry has played the field since the talks of his injury came out. So, he might not be able to throw out base stealers? Their base stealing threats are pretty much; Chisholm and Volpe. And we saw last night that the pitcher can take care of Chisholm.

Seems easy to me; start Fry for 6 or 7 innings, then sub in Hedges for defense late. Should Hedges' spot come up at the plate, pinch hit for him and then you still have Naylor.

Naylor has been just as bad as Hedges lately sadly. I know catcher's aren't usually known for offense but our catcher position is a beyond comical black hole.

I thought I heard them say last night that Fry's battling an injury stopping him from playing Catcher. Regardless, it was back-to-back tactical blunders pinch hitting for Naylor so early and basically gifting the Yankees multiple outs each game with Hedges in the game for 4-5 innings while you were still in it. Naylor is struggling, but Hedges has been an almost auto-out for the last 5-6 years.

I'd still take Naylor 10 out of 10 times over Hedges. Bo has been very streaky this year. Since Fry behind the plate isn't going to happen, gotta hope that Naylor eventually gets a random hit or two. With Hedges, you're just hoping for random contact.

Yeah, they brought up Fry's injury last night, but it's nothing new. It's believed that the elbow injury happened on June 23 vs Toronto, where he exited after three innings. He's only caught one game (July 23) since then. Maybe there's something more to it, but if it's just an elbow injury, then I gotta wonder why he's been playing the field, even if just sporadically? If it's just first base, sure there are less throwing opportunities that other spots, but there are still a number of potential plays where a first baseman would need to throw the ball.

Still, if his arm is completely shot...

Fry No Throw >>> Naylor/Hedges Batting

Oh I would too, you're right, Naylor at least gets lucky and pops a few every now and then. A good AB for Hedges is not striking out in 3 pitches.

The Yanks are really good situational hitters. I haven't watched them all that much this year except for a lot of highlights but they are doing what the Tribe are struggling at mightily. Still time but it doesn't feel great right now.
