Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Cleveland Browns | Browns freeze Bills in shutout win

Browns freeze Bills in shutout win

To actually enjoy this miserably frigid weather, you'd have to be either cold-blooded or a masochist.
Or Jamal Lewis.
Lewis battled his way to 163 rushing yards on 33 carries Sunday, leading the Browns to an 8-0 win over the Bills in a game played in extreme winter conditions that included morning rain, two inches of snowfall during the game and winds that gusted above 40 MPH.

Like many of his teammates, especially on offense, Browns running back Jamal Lewis wore no long sleeves to protect his arms and no gloves to protect his hands from the snowy, blustery conditions in Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
"I trust my skin for the feel of the ball," he said after the game. "I depend on my hands instead of gloves."

Browns brave the wind, cold, snow

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 12.16.2007

It was cold -- with wind chills at 16 degrees.
It was snowy and windy -- with the white stuff falling for most of the game and gusts blowing upwards of 40 miles per hour.
"It looked like something I saw on the Discovery Channel, like something about the North Pole," Bills running back Marshawn Lynch said.
But the Browns made due with the conditions and beat the Buffalo Bills, 8-0, Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Cleveland Browns | A kick to remember

A kick to remember

There have been many -- many -- longer field goals in Browns history, but none may be more jaw-dropping than the 49-yarder Phil Dawson booted with 1:22 left before halftime in Sunday's 8-0 win over the Buffalo Bills at Cleveland Browns.
Just like the 51-yarder he kicked at the end of regulation at Baltimore a month ago, this one -- one of two he made Sunday -- hit off the support bar of the goal post after going through the uprights.

"You can't let the weather affect you," Browns linebacker Andra Davis said after the game. "I don't care if it's 115 degrees or -15, you still have to go out and play. Our fans were out there. If they can handle it, why can't we?"

I'm sick of baby steps and backpeddling. I want the goddamn playoffs. I know that's rather unrealistic, but how many other down-trodden teams have done it in the past 5-10 years. San Diego, Carolina, St. Louis, Baltimore, even the friggin' Bungles.
Yep, I'm quoting myself.

Cleveland 8, Buffalo 0
Conditions made the contest unique for Browns

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Monday, December 17, 2007

CLEVELAND ? At game time, sustained winds howled out of the northwest at 32 miles per hour. "And it's snowing," the Cleveland Browns' press box announcer felt the need to add.
Blizzarding was more like it.

"It wasn't brutally cold, so that helped," Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said after Sunday's important victory over the Buffalo Bills had been achieved by the unusual score of 8-0.
Their sixth straight home win, ninth overall, kept the Browns on a playoff course with two games remaining. They did not clinch a postseason berth because Tennessee, their closest wild-card pursuer, beat Kansas City 26-17, but they virtually eliminated the Bills and pulled into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the AFC North when the Steelers lost 29-22 to Jacksonville.
The win also guaranteed the Browns their first winning season since 2002, when they went 9-7 and last made the playoffs.

Browns' Lewis busts up Buffalo defense

Tailback breaks through blizzard conditions, rushes for 163 yards on 33 carries.

By Sean McClelland

CLEVELAND ? How do you like Jamal Lewis now? Looks like a pretty good one-year investment, don't you think?
Lewis rushed for 163 yards on 33 carries Sunday and carried the Browns through a blizzard to an 8-0 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

"Jamal kind of looked like Jim Brown, didn't he," linebacker Andra Davis said.
Lewis was supposed to be washed up, remember? Or at least a shadow of the player who in 2003 led the NFL in rushing while a member of the Baltimore Ravens.
His 34th career 100-yard rushing game and fourth this season helped the Browns maintain their playoff momentum.
"It was very tough, actually," Lewis said of blizzard conditions that included 43 mile-per-hour wind gusts. "When you're out on the field with the adrenaline, it's not that bad. It's when you sit on the sideline, then get on the field, then there's a TV timeout."

Browns let it snow The weather outside is frightful, but for Cleveland it turns out delightful
Published on Monday, Dec 17, 2007

CLEVELAND: About one hour before kickoff, the Browns quarterbacks and receivers turned to the right out of their locker room and looked at the field at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The snow was blinding, and the wind was whipping it every which way, forming mini-tornado-like swirls in the corner of the stadium.
The conditions, Romeo Crennel said, ''were a little rough.''
And it drizzled a bit when Noah built his ark.
Derek Anderson wore no long sleeves, and when he saw the snow, he let out a cry of delight.
Others whooped and hollered as they strode onto the field.

SHUTOUT IN WHITEOUT Browns' defense holds opponent scoreless for first time since 2005
By Marla Ridenour

CLEVELAND: With the snow flying, the wind gusting up to 43 mph, the yard lines obliterated and a 16-degree wind chill at kickoff, Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch thought he was part of a Discovery Channel show on the North Pole.
Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius said he would judge if it was the coldest game he's ever played in by whether his body thawed out in three hours or less.
It was so bitter that during television timeouts the Browns huddled tight to block the wind.
''I was trembling the whole first half,'' Browns running back Jamal Lewis said.
But none of that seemed to affect the unflappable Browns. The Browns outlasted Buffalo 8-0 Sunday in a showdown for an AFC wild-card berth. Improving to 6-1 at home, the Browns (9-5) can clinch their first playoff appearance since 2002 next Sunday with a victory at Cincinnati.
''I told you guys we were going to be here, we were going to turn some heads this year,'' Browns tight end Kellen Winslow said.

Browns declare win over Bills 'Dra's day Linebacker Andra Davis played one of the best games of his career
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Dec 17, 2007
CLEVELAND: Florida-born Andra Davis said last week you wouldn't catch him outside on a snowy day unless he was playing football with pads on.
But Sunday with more than 2 inches of snow falling and the wind gusting to 43 mph in Cleveland Browns Stadium, the Browns linebacker looked totally unfazed.
He made perhaps his biggest impact of the season, recording six solo tackles and two quarterback hurries as the Browns beat the Buffalo Bills 8-0.
''This is the worst I've played in, but it's fun if you win,'' Davis said of the conditions.

Dawson plays like a wizard in a blizzard Browns kicker makes field goals of 35, 49 yards in snowstorm
By George M. Thomas

Published on Monday, Dec 17, 2007
CLEVELAND: With whipping winds swirling heavy snow, the type of game that NFL Films loves to immortalize, the last person you'd expect to have the most significant impact would be a football team's kicker.
But in the Browns' 8-0 victory over the Buffalo Bills (7-7) Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium, nine-year veteran Phil Dawson booted his team to victory in less-than-ideal conditions.

Cleveland Browns defeat Buffalo Bills in NFL game between wild-card playoff hopefuls

Playoffs almost in Browns' view
Monday, December 17, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Through a blinding snow turned horizontal at times by 40 mph wind gusts, the Browns could almost see the playoffs after their epic 8-0 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Almost, but not quite.
"Our playoff game is Cincinnati," insisted linebacker Willie McGinest, referring to next week's road assignment.
