Cleveland Browns 2006 Draft Discussion (official thread)

I cant even find a bio on him.

Travis Wilson
Height: 6-2
Weight: 213
40 Speed: 4.53*
Position: Wide Receiver
College: Oklahoma
Final Grade: I 5.5

GM JR Scouting LLC Grading Scale/Key

SUMMARY
Wilson is a good college receiver who really stepped up in 2005 after being primarily a backup throughout his career. He has quick feet and, although he does not burst off the ball into routes, once he get moving, he accelerates to full speed quickly and can get open on short and medium routes. His quickness enables him to get open on short/medium routes despite not running sharp routes. He has excellent hands and can consistently catch any pass thrown his way -- he can get up to pluck the high pass and can lay-out to catch the slightly overthrown ball. While he has quick feet and good playing speed, he lacks the top-level playing speed to stretch the field and get separation deep. He is a thin receiver and, despite competing hard when he runs, he does not consistently break tackles and gain yards after contact. He finished his career in style and was surprisingly consistent catching the ball and making plays for an Oklahoma team that struggled passing the ball in 2005. He probably can't be a starting receiver in the NFL, but he can be a good third or fourth receiver who can make plays because of his very good hands, quickness and competitiveness.

STRONG POINTS
Wilson is a quick-footed receiver who accelerates to full speed quickly with the ball in his hands and consistently runs hard after the catch. He shows toughness going up and catching the high pass in traffic without peeking at the defense, takes the hard hit right after the catch and holds onto the ball -- he has shown the hands and jumping ability to get up and catch the high pass surprisingly well. He has very good hands to reach out and make the tough catch when he catches the ball with hands.

WEAKNESSES
While Wilson has quick feet, good acceleration and playing speed, he is a little stiff and runs upright in routes which hinders his ability to consistently runs sharp routes. Despite his quick feet, he does not burst off the ball into his route and does not show the playing speed to get separation on deep routes. He did not run a variety of routes in college, and he does not consistently break tackles and gain yards after contact. He also tends to be a body catcher. He does not give a good effort as a blocker and struggles to eliminate his man because of it.

The Browns added a potential weapon on offense with the evening's last pick, snaring Oklahoma wideout Travis Wilson. Wilson was ranked the seventh best receiver available in this year's draft by Scout.com's draft experts...

In one sense, the Browns got a bargain in WR Travis Wilson. With the 78th pick in the draft, Phil Savage called the name of the 77th best player available, according to Scout's draft experts. The Oklahoma receiver is unlikely to make as big a splash as last year's pick, Charlie Frye, but he's got a lot of potential.
Wilson was slowed by a foot injury during his senior year, which caused his numbers and draft position to fall off as he posted 310 yards on 25 receptions. The prior year, however, Wilson had a career-high 660 yards on fifty receptions.
A tallish receiver at 6-2, Wilson has very good natural pass-catching skills and is able to hold onto the ball when taking a hit. He's not a deep threat, but could turn into a solid possession receiver learning behind Joe Jurevicius.
TFY Draft Preview's Tony Pauline wrote in his scouting report for Wilson last month that Wilson "could be one of the draft's better bargains late in Day One". The Browns sure hope so, and if Wilson can return to the form he displayed his junior year - and showed again at the Senior Bowl - the Browns may have gotten quite a bargain indeed.

Overall I was pretty thrilled with Day One.

I guess Wimbley is a great pass-rusher and has great physical skills. Jackson was the #1 rated ILB in the draft, and that was probably our biggest need. The last pick kind of pissed me off, but Savage knows more than I do so hopefully he looks like a genius. I looked around and supposedly Wilson wouldve been a 1st round wide reciever, but he had a nagging foot injury all year.

We have two 4th rounders, pick 110 and pick 112. We also have two 5th rounders, pick 145 and pick 152. We also have two 6th rounders, pick 180 and pick 181.

Some names to look out for on the second day of the draft:

Gabe Watson
Darnell Bing
Ko Simpson
Max Jean-Gilles
Fred Matua
Rodrique Wright
Barry Cofield
Mike Kudla
Orien Harris
Stanley McGlover
Kai Parham
Victor Adeyanju
Babatunde Oshinowo
Montavious Stanley

“What really happened is coming in we had three linebackers who we thought were second-round values,” he said. “DeMeco Ryans and Rocky McIntosh were gone and we had a chance to get who we wanted and get something for Jeff.”

That's an interesting quote from Savage. I would've thought it was between Jackson and Hodge. Overall I'm thrilled with both Wimbley and Jackson. Jackson could have an impact similar to Thurman for the Bungles last year.

That third round pick is a real head scratcher. It's hard to defer to Savage's judgment when he's picked so many Oklahoma skill players the last two years. DE is still a big need, hopefully someone like Wright is available in round 4. Still holding out hope for Kudla too.

With two each in the 4th, 5th, and 6th, plus one in the 7th, I wouldn't be surprised to see them package a couple later round picks for another 4th rounder. Savage should be able to find some real gems early on tomorrow.
