Cleveland Browns 2006 Draft Discussion (official thread)

browns select lawrence vickers fb colorado
Not too sure of what value a fullback brings to this team? we dont even utilize terrelle smith as one of the best blocking fullbacks in the league and we draft a fullback ? hmm i am little baffled.

edit: i just looked up some stuff on vickers and looks like he might be able to be a short yardage back . now with taking vickers and harrison hopefully the browns will be able to keep droughns carries down this year and i am crossing my fingers that lee suggs can stay healthy for once

The running back with the paranormal nickname wants to continue to scare opponents in Cleveland with the Browns. Fred Greetham was in on the conference call with the new Browns running back, and brings us his report...

Berea – The Browns said one of their three priorities heading into the draft was to get a change of pace back. The Browns are looking for someone who can spell Reuben Droughns and catch the ball out of the backfield.
They turned to a Ghost to fill the need.
Jerome Harrison from Washington State was nicknamed Ghost for the way he seemed to disappear for long runs coming out of the backfield. The 5-9, 199 pound back rushed for 1,900 yards last fall and totaled 2,800 yards in just 16 starts at Washington State.
“I loved (the nickname) and hope to carry the Ghost to Cleveland,” he said. “I had a couple of decent runs and the defensive coordinator started calling me that and it stuck.”
Harrison was ranked third in the nation in both rushing (172.7 ypg) and all-purpose yardage (192 ypg). He also was the sixth highest running back listed by Scout.com.
Harrison describes his physical stature helps him on the field.
“I make people miss and play with a low center of gravity,” he said. “I have good balance and play hard. I play to win.”
Being a bit slight in stature, Harrison was not daunted by the fact.
“I’m a little undersized, but when you carry the ball 300 times and have no injuries or serious setbacks, I think you can throw (the size factor) out the window.”
To say Harrison was productive would be an understatement as he rushed for over 100 yards in the final 14 games he played for the Cougars, including four games where he went over the 200-yard mark.
Harrison also caught 34 passes for 275 yards while at Washington State and totaled 65 receptions for 574 yards in his career. Harrison spent his first two seasons at Pasadena (Cal.) City College.
“Reuben Droughns is a great back,” he said. “I don’t mind coming in and spelling him or being a third down back or whatever I’m asked to do.”
Harrison said he is accustomed to catching the ball.
“I’m going to be able to catch the ball,” he said. “I think I can be an asset to the Browns because I can create mismatches if they put me in the slot.”
Harrison is eager to take his game to the next level.
“I’m glad for the opportunity to play for the Browns,” he said. “I worked hard in the off-season--very hard. I took it very seriously because I wanted to play at the next level.
“The Browns have given me the opportunity and I want to make the most of it.”

By drafting DeMario Minter with their fifth round pick, the Browns have added needed depth to their defensive backfield. Minter becomes the latest in a series of defensive backs from Georgia who will try to make their mark with the Browns...

</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
Take one look at the Cleveland Browns current depth chart, and a couple of positions stand out as being dangerously thin.
When the Browns didn't pursue Ray Mickens, traded Chris Crocker, and waived Michael Lehan, the suddenly found themselves without a lot of depth in the defensive backfield.
Phil Savage continues to use his second-day picks to grab the occasional role-player and build depth as he selected Georgia defensive back DeMario Minter with the team's second pick in the fifth round.
A prospect who has begin to put together a complete game at Georgia, Minter is a terrific athlete who was named an All-Conference selection after his second year as a starter. He had two straight seasons with almost identical numbers, registering 48 tackles and 9 interceptions as a senior after 51 and 10 as a junior.
Minter has the potential to move up and become a starter at some point down the line, and can help fill immediate needs as a nickel back behind Gary Baxter, Leigh Bodden, and Daylon McCutcheon.
Phil Savage acquired seven second-day picks and is clearly using them to fill specific needs on the roster. Like the previous fifth-round pick, Jerome Harrison, the selection of Minter points to a draft plan that combines opportunism with players who have fallen with recognition of immediate needs.

Babatunde Oshinowo
Nose Tackle

Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 310 pounds
Class Year: So
Experience: 1V
High School: Neuqua Valley
Hometown: Naperville, IL

Pros: He shows the instincts to quickly diagnose the play and anchor in the middle. He is a wide body lineman with a low center of gravity and the quickness on the snap to gain penetration and make plays. He is one of the fastest rising prospects and somewhat underrated in this deep tackle class. He gets off the ball quickly and into the gaps, creating disruption immediately on the snap.

Cons: He has a tendency to not always fully utilize his natural leverage, but could really respond to good pro coaching to become a fine starting nose tackle. He needs to work on locating the ball quicker and to show better overall awareness and football instincts.

Numbers: As a senior, he started 11 games at tackle making 54 tackles, including 10.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 5.27 seconds, did a 32-inch vertical jump, an 8-9 broad jump and 33 reps in the 225-pound bench press.

Skinny: He could start at the nose in the 3-4 defense and will certainly get a lot of consideration from the Browns, Patriots and Steelers. He will most likely go mid-way through the first day but could slide past the top 50 picks.
