can anyone help me out here... i have my Playstation 2, and have so for about 4 years now, and now sometimes it will give me the "Disk Read Error" message when im trying to load a game up. I know its not the game, because this is a game my friend just bought like a couple weeks ago. And the thing is, i played the game for 30 minutes or so one night (after re-loading it after getting the error message), and obviously it worked, but the next days and days after that i just kept getting the same message and it wouldnt work.

So do i need to clean my PS2? is it just breaking down? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

I have had issues with my PS2 for a little over a year now; and it only effects certain games-only my EA Sports Games, most notably NCAA 2004 AND 2005!?!?!?

I did a search about 6 months ago on google and there is some walk throughs on how to clean the laser. It involves taking out 6-8 screws and disassembling the PS2 and rubbing a q tip with alcohol on the laser. It is rather easy, search for "PS2 DRE" or "PS2 Disc Read Error" and you should find it.

disassembling my PS2... ahhhh im sure i could do it, but id be seriously pissed if i screwed it up.

thanks though for the advice, i might give it a shot, but might not right now because it only has affected me that much on this game (God of War) and its my friends game anyway.... maybe if it gets bad ill give it a shot.

He pretty much described it.

Turn it over and take out the bottom screws. Remember where they go. 4 long, 4 short.
Pop the lid off. Careful with the ribbon assembly. Its not fragile, but be careful anyway.
Use an eyeglass screwdriver or a tweeker to remove the screws giving you access to the DVD drive.
remove the lid to the DVD drive.
You'll see the laser lens right there.
Use a Qtip and a little bit of rubbing alcohol to clean the lens.
If you have a can of compressed air, now would be the time to blow out the machine to ensure you won't have to do this again any time soon.
Put it back together in reverse order.

Should be good as new for a long while.

I would never recommend opening your PS2 as you void the warranty. If you're getting Disc Read Error, you likely have a busted laser. If you search online you can find an FAQ about sending it to Sony. It'll cost about 15 bucks to fix but they'll put in a new laser and you should be good as new.

If you've opened it, tough luck. Otherwise, send it to Sony. It takes a week and you'll get it back.

well im pretty sure i dont even have the warranty anymore.....

but yeah i see what youre saying. i still might not open it up just for the fact that only one game is really messing up. unless my Madden or Ncaa starts to give me the Disk Read Error, i probably might not open up. But the curiousity might get the best of me and i might look inside.... or i might just wanna play the game really bad. all of you guys thanks for the help so far.

You don't have the warranty as in the 90 days fix all, but you haven't opened it, right? There's a seal on the back. If it's intact, call them, send it in and they'll replace the laser. Boom, no problem.

I'm telling you, my PS2 was almost 3 years old when I did this. You don't have to be within the 90 days. One week, 10-15 bucks to ship it (and I did it first class because I love my PS2), good as new. Even better.

im thinkin i might do somethin like this. and no, i havent broken the seal yet. i was playin around with it last night, deciding whether i should open it or not, and actually got all of the bottom screws out but decided to put them back in and not break the seal. i might go to best buy and have them give me a quote on what it would take to fix it, and if its too much, ill probably send it in to sony. i hope the warranty is still valid, because ive probably had this PS2 for almost 5 years if not more.

I went to find the FAQ and apparently they aren't always offering the free repair, it depends on the model of your PS2. So I'd give them a call. Don't mention it being free, just tell them your PS2 model, you get DREs and you want it fixed. If they don't say free then you might want to bring up the lawsuit. You can do a search for it on Google.

Yeah i searched it in google, and found a pretty good site about this kinda stuff.

http://www.geocities.com/techboi88/ps2classact.html

for anyone else with this kind of problem, go to this site and it explains about how to fix it, and has a petition you can sign to try to get free repairs for DRE's. Try the first link under the "Links" section for a thorough explanation of how to clean your PS2.

im gonna call Sony first, and like Savante reccomended, mention the lawsuit if they try to charge me for it.

Anyone have any problems with a grinding/clicking noise? I haven't ever received a disk read error, but my game ncaa 2006 freezes at different intervals on load up.

Anyone know what the heck THIS problem is?!? mucho help appreciated.
dude, the same thing just happened to me the other night. i had brought by PS2 to the beach with me (and actually didnt use it once so it was a waste of energy) and kept it under normal temp. (70-75 degrees) for most of the time. it got banged once (dropped on my head after sliding off tv, haha....) but i dont think enough to really break anything. this sucks though, cus when i turned it on to play a movie, it gave me the "disk read error". bullllllllllllll shit.
