The constraint of the game of baseball is 27 outs.

Rule #1 of run creation then, is avoid outs as much as possible.

Rule #2 of run creation is accumulate as many total bases as possible when you don't make an out.

Easiest way to explain it to the disbeliever you meet is ask them what outcome they would pick if they could choose an outcome for the hitter on their team. If they say anything besides "home run" then you know you are dealing with someone steeped in the ways his little league volunteer coach taught him 50+ years ago.
