Cincinnati Reds (2025 is our year! Haha thats actually funny)

Austin Hayes for a 1 year deal hoping for health and a GABP rebound. If nothing else he can be the short side of a platoon in the OF.

Hayes, Candy and Lux give you three actual MLB guys (who obviously have some flaws or they wouldn't be here) who improve the bottom of the 26 man roster if nothing else.

I've seen them do worse shit.

Ok so they added

1) Wade Miley to a MiLB contract: coming off TJ surgery so he should be ramping up late spring or about when depth starts getting tested. Absolutely love the move. Zero risk, possibly significant depth piece and vet presence for young pitchers if nothing else.

2) Taylor Rogers from SF and $6MM cash for a minor leaguer I have never heard of. Not sure what the hell just happened there but I will take it. Quality lefty for the pen and some cash, maybe another move coming?

These are all reasonably competent moves on the surface. I will await the details of how they all blow apart but be satisfied for now.

Code for: “we can’t afford him.”

Look at Witt Jr's contract. That is the comp. ( I think they already missed their window if there legitimately was one).

11 years, $288MM that's a ~$26MM AAV. Reds payroll is typically ~$100-110MM

AND you have the uncertainty of the tv money plus the next CBA is due up at the end of the '26 season (iirc). There is already talk about punting '27 to duke it out with the players union to get a salary cap in place. I think this is going to be much more likely as the Dodgers just continue to pull away from everyone else economically.

I'd love to see him be a life long Red but I think there are reasons he will not be and it isn't as simple as the "Reds are cheap".

From a CBS Sports MLB Rumors article. Interesting they were trying to get Robert from the White Sox, though the article doesn’t say who the Reds would’ve traded to get him.

Robert to Reds deal fell apart

The White Sox were working on a deal that would have sent All-Star center fielder to the Reds, but the two sides couldn't come to an agreement, according to The Athletic. The holdup appeared to be how much of Robert's remaining salary the Reds would have taken on in a deal and Cincinnati ended up pivoting to signing Austin Hays in free agency. The report also notes that the Giants tried earlier this offseason to land Robert in a trade.

The big takeaway is obviously that the White Sox were serious enough about trading Robert that talks got well past preliminary phases in discussions, but not in a rush to actually make anything happen.

Robert, 27, is due $15 million in 2025 before a pair of $20 million team options, so, at least in theory, it shouldn't be difficult for the White Sox to deal him at some point this year, whether that is before spring training, during it or during the regular season. He's long had issues with injury and inconsistency, but the upside is the 2023 season, when he hit .264/.315/.542 (130 OPS+) with 36 doubles, 38 homers, 80 RBI, 90 runs, 20 steals and 5.0 WAR.

I thought I read that Arroyo was a name involved but he wasn't enough or something like that.

It's going to be hard for anyone to get Robert from CWS. The injury risk makes him very difficult to value.
