It does seem to be more like a new normal, at least away from GMBP. I remember hearing part of what was crucial to the Orioles' success last year was being selective hitters. I am feeling more selectivity with the Reds at the plate this year, since they no longer swing at pitches 2 feet outside and in the dirt or at neck level. And thank goodness the Tucker Barnhart launch angle technique is completely gone.
And of course there is more running, lots more. India grounds into a lot of double plays... okay hit and run with McLean on first, voila India moves him into scoring position. The new first base coach deserves a lot of credit for the new philosophy. Keep that guy, make him the manager some day.
Agree 100% on selectiveness and the new 1B coach. He's great. The first time I watched Elly I told my son that he has a game plan and makes adjustments. He has pitch recognition so when he struggles it isn't the same as the conga line of raw power guys who swing at arm motion in case they hit something. Minor league player development has to get a nod here for once because prospects are actually improving in the minors. Huge turnaround for this franchise.
As to the new normal, one indicator for me is that the fringe of the 26 man roster cuts are starting to become more and more difficult. As teams get more talented, good players aren't going to be able to make the roster. It's a good problem to have and a sign that they are becoming a sustainable, .500+ team.
On the roster moves-the decisions to be made seem to be coming into focus.
Fraley is back today so that means Hopkins is almost certainly going back to AAA. If Benson keeps coming on then it makes the Myers situation even more pressing. It looks like right now, and in the future, the best OF is
LF: Senzel/Fraley
CF: Friedl
RF: Benson
4th: Fairchild
Myers was signed by a team that thought it was going to struggle this year in the hopes that they could sign cheap, get a GABP bump to his numbers and flip him at the deadline. His injury and the teams performance have changed the plan obviously. Not my money but I'd just DFA him. He was a reasonable answer to a previous set of conditions. He is no longer a reasonable answer to the current set of conditions. Don't force a bad fit.
IF seems to be coming down to the Votto/Newman/CES/3rd catcher vortex. I have been saying just drop the 3rd catcher but seeing how well Maile and Casali handle the actual catcher's role and knowing the potential is there for Stephenson to hit well enough to be a part time 1B/DH/C guy I'm not so sure anymore. Again, short term step back for long term fit isn't so easy when you are actually a competitive team.
Newman is an easy flip candidate because he's a cheap, veteran utility guy who is hitting. Exactly what a contender is going to want for some depth. So if we are a contender, why would we give that away? Hurts us and helps our competition.
I'd focus my efforts on not needing two roster spots for LF personally. Can CES play corner OF? They have been trying it. Can you trade Fraley&Senzel for anything?
Lots of stuff to solve as things evolve but it's interesting again. No matter how much it improves, or even if they still aren't ready this year, it's interesting again and I'll take that.
