Cincinnati Reds 2018 season (It's that time of year again)

https://deadspin.com/so-is-scooter-gennett-really-this-good-now-1826738067

...

Gennett was, for the first four seasons of his Major League career, very much A Guy on A Guy’s career arc—around league average for a while and then around replacement level for a while, and seemingly bound to be cycled out when an actual Dude came along to claim his roster spot. When the Brewers waived him in early 2017 it seemed, to the extent that anyone noticed, like that unremarkable reckoning had finally come around. When the Reds claimed him off waivers it seemed like something the Reds would do.

But ever since Gennett whacked four dingers in a game last June, he has not been one of those Guys. He has been, and increasingly appears to be, something a lot more like a Dude. Gennett hit 27 homers last year after the Reds claimed him on waivers from the Braves and slashed a career-best .295/.342./.531 through 141 games, but also a lot of Guys hit a lot of homers last year. For the last two months of this year, though, he has somehow been even better. Gennett currently leads the National League in batting (.340 as of Tuesday) and ranks among the top five in WAR. He might be Daniel Murphy-ing his way into making the phrase “Scooter Gennett, All-Star” a true statement. The Guy is a Dude. It’s happening.

Which, if you’re just joining us, is weird. Gennett was always going to be easier to remember than, say, Travis Snider, mostly because his name is fucking Scooter, for one.

Last 30 Games:

R - 20
H - 47
HR - 8
RBI - 29
BB - 6
SO - 27
SB - 0
AVG: .402
SLG: .429
OBP: .667

This has been an unreal month (it goes back nearly 45 games) for him. Hitting over .400 for any stretch lasting longer than a week is rare, but this is ridiculous.

More to the point, to go all baseball nerd on you, the peripherals are decently aligned so while his Batting Average for Balls in Play is a ridiculous .398 right now, everything else is more or less right along the same trajectory in his career. He is getting lucky on some batted balls to have a BABIP that high, but his career BABIP is over .330 anyway and he had one year in Milwaukee where his BABIP was .380.

He won't sustain it but it wouldn't shock me to see him finish the year with a BA in the .320 rage with 25-30 homers. It's too bad its being wasted on Cincy - if he was in Chicago or LA or New York he would be an MVP candidate right now.

What's even more of a shame is how the owner in Cincy is going to be too fucking stupid to trade him while his value is at an all time high for someone that can help if/when they ever have a talented young core again.

See Hamilton, Billy one each.

The dumb just keep being dumb

Another fun fact...Gennett, Suarez and Duvall have driven in all 60 runs the Reds have scored this year. I think.

Seriously though, Gennett and Suarez are both top 4 in the NL in RBI and Duvall is tied for 13th. These guys score like 1 run a game (or 7 in one and then 0 in six.)

The Reds are 8th in the NL in RS and 17th overall. That means that if they score, it’s off of the bat of those three and the other six guys (including Votto) are fucking useless at driving in runs (but we already knew that.)

Why one former MLB player's dad is looking for his son's baseball cards

Mike Oz

Patrick Freel knows mortality all too well. Life, as he learned the hard way, can be gone in an instant. It was three days before Christmas in 2012, when his son Ryan took his own life.

Yes, that Ryan Freel. The MLB utilityman who spent parts of eight seasons in the big leagues with the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays, among others.

As we approach Father’s Day, one of the toughest times of the year for a father who had to bury a son, the elder Freel has just one thing he wants.

Baseball cards with Ryan on them.

“I’m getting older,” Patrick Freel told Yahoo Sports. “I’ve had a heart attack. I don’t know from one day to another if I’m going to get up in the morning until I see that blue sky.”

Mortality — it changes your priorities. And these days, the elder Freel’s priorities include gathering his son’s cards. The idea is that he wants to create a binder of baseball cards for each of Ryan’s three daughters — who are now 9, 11 and 13 years old.

He has enough cards to fill one binder. But Ryan had three daughters. So you can see the problem here.

Reds Hall of Fame Induction Gala features star-studded lineup

The Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame is expecting a star-studded lineup for its induction gala on July 22 - including six of the Big Red Machine's "Great Eight" and several of its pitchers as well as National Baseball Hall of Famers Ken Griffey, Jr. and Barry Larkin in addition to other former Reds greats.

With Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez from the "Great Eight," the number of National Baseball Hall of Famers on the list scheduled to appear is five, and the total of Reds Hall of Famers is 24. (Dave Concepcion, George Foster and Ken Griffey, Sr. are the others from the "Great Eight" scheduled to attend.)

Re: Dave Concepcion, who turns 70 today

I always like to hear about people older than me that are still alive.....

and across the land a chill runs down the spines of the top 5 amateur baseball players in America

The top 5 have nothing to worry about. The Red wouldn't recognize a top 5 talent if he took a shit in their Gold Star chili.
