Almost football season again
BY TOM GROESCHEN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
<!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT--> It's never too early to talk Cincinnati prep football, with St. Xavier the preseason choice to repeat as No. 1 in the city and possibly the state.
"I think everybody is chasing St. X, and there's no doubt about that," said Colerain coach Kerry Coombs, whose team again is forecast No. 2 in Cincinnati.
With two-a-day workouts beginning in just 38 days (Aug. 3), area players are preparing for the 2006 season via running, lifting weights and acceleration training. While the players work and sweat in the heat, preseason pollsters and Internet chat boards already are buzzing:

Ohio High magazine predicts St. Xavier, the reigning Division I state champion, again will be Cincinnati's best but will finish state runner-up to Lakewood St. Edward.
Ditto the results of a fans' poll on Yappi.com, a popular prep Web site that features news, information and forums for Ohio high school sports.
Ohio High predicts one state champion from the area, CHCA (Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) in Division V. CHCA was Division V state runner-up last year.
Colerain strong safety/wide receiver Eugene Clifford and La Salle defensive end Ben Martin are the two best players not only in Cincinnati but all of Ohio, according to recruiting services including Rivals.com, Ohio High magazine and Louisiana-based Max Emfinger. Some rank Clifford No. 1 and others say Martin is No. 1 in the state. Neither player has picked a college yet.
St. Xavier last season went 15-0 and won the program's first Division I state championship. The Bombers will be led by running back Darius Ashley, who rushed for 1,633 yards and scored 28 touchdowns as a sophomore last season.
Rumors that Ashley might transfer indeed are just rumors, St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said.
"Darius is here and he's looking good," Specht said. "Our offensive line will be very good. Now, if we can find a guy who can pull the trigger."
That would be quarterback, where the graduated Brad Scherer will be tough to replace. Top candidates include Moeller transfer Ryan Morris (will be a senior) and John Hurley (junior).
Defensively, the Bombers lost standout lineman Alex Albright (Boston College) among 59 graduating seniors. Strong safety Fred Craig is among the junior class that Specht calls "special."
St. Xavier supplanted Colerain atop Ohio prep football last season. Colerain was the 2004 Division I state champion but lost twice to St. Xavier last year, including a 12-9 overtime playoff game when Ashley caught a game-ending 20-yard touchdown pass.
Colerain returns Clifford as a multiple threat including strong safety, wide receiver and kick returner. Incumbent quarterback Gary Pride and running back Trammell Williams, who both rushed for over 1,000 yards last year, return for their senior seasons.
Colerain also has a notable transfer in senior-to-be Je'Sean Godfrey, who was Mount Healthy's starting quarterback last year but figures to be a running back at Colerain.
Beyond St. Xavier and Colerain, there is some debate about who will challenge in Division I. Elder, La Salle and Moeller will join St. Xavier in the always strong Greater Catholic League South, with no clear preseason choice for No. 2 in the league.
Among Divisions II-V, top players will include Winton Woods RB Hosea Simpson, who returns for his senior year after leading the area with 1,674 yards rushing last season. Simpson also scored 25 TDs last year and is considered a Division I college prospect.
In Division V, CHCA returns senior quarterback Doug Browne, who led his team to a state runner-up finish last year by throwing for 3,298 yards with 41 TD passes.
"We'll have a lot of offensive firepower, but we'll have to replace a lot of good kids on defense," CHCA athletic director Cliff Hern said. "Hopefully we'll get there again."
The first games of the year, as usual, are the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown games Aug. 24-26 at three sites. It starts Thursday, Aug. 24 at Princeton High School (Wilmington vs. Winton Woods at 6 p.m., followed by Lebanon-Edgewood at 8:15 p.m.).
The mega-events also will include the third annual i-wireless FOX19 Prep Classic at Paul Brown Stadium (Sept. 9, including Moeller-Massillon and St. Xavier-Lakewood St. Edward) and the second annual Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge (Sept. 15-16 at Nippert Stadium, including Elder vs. De La Salle, Calif., and St. Xavier vs. 2005 USA Today national champion Lakeland, Fla.).

Weight:
3. SOLOMON THOMAS, LAKOTA WEST
Position: DE
Height: 6-4
Weight: 215
The buzz: He lists North Carolina State, Boston College, Ohio State, Arizona State, Illinois and Louisville among his choices. Lakota West coach Larry Cox puts Thomas in the elite DE/LB class with La Salle's Ben Martin. Thomas is a physical player who plays the run well, and shows an unusual ability to get his hands on passes. He had nine sacks and 16 tackles for loss last season. Rated among the top dozen players in Ohio by most scouting services.
4. SKYLAR JONES, MIDDLETOWN
Position: QB
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180
The buzz: Purdue, which is recruiting him as a QB, leads his recent list. Ohio State, Cincinnati, Wake Forest and West Virginia also are contenders. Threw for 1,974 yards and 21 touchdowns as junior, rushed for 630 yards and eight TDs. Has run 4.4 in the 40 dash, an elite athlete who was Enquirer 2006 track athlete of the year (DI state champion in 300 hurdles, fourth in 100 hurdles). Rated among the top 25 players in the state by most scouts.
5. DARYLE BALLEW, WITHROW
Position: DT
Height: 6-3
Weight: 301
The buzz: Committed to Illinois. A wide body with big, quick hands. At the high school level, he's nearly impossible to block without a double-team. Outstanding against the run. Coaches like him because he hustles, including one play last season when he chased a QB from one side of the field to the other - three times. A late bloomer whose stock continues to soar. Rated among top 25 players in state by most scouts.
6. DEWEY ELLIOTT, FAIRFIELD
Position: LB
Height: 6-0
Weight: 239
The buzz: Has offers from Cincinnati, Indiana and Iowa and interest from several other schools including Ohio State. As a junior he had over 100 tackles, 12 sacks and two interceptions as the Indians reached the Division I playoffs. Very physical player, can shed blockers easily but usually has the speed to avoid most blocks. Also a hard hitter and sure tackler. His stock has risen dramatically in the past year. Rated the No. 6 player in Ohio by national recruiting analyst Max Emfinger.
7. MARK WETTERER, ANDERSON
Position: OT
Height: 6-5
Weight: 295
The buzz: Nicknamed "The Wall" by Ohio High magazine's Duane Long, he is a big man and projects to get bigger. Has offers from Maryland, Connecticut, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Toledo and Akron. Great pass blocker, has long arms ideal for a left tackle, and uses his big hands to stop rushers in their tracks. Great technique helps set him apart from most prep linemen, as he knows how bend at the knee (not the waist) and use his leverage. Has bench pressed over 400 pounds. Rated among the top 30 prospects in Ohio by most scouting services.
8. DERRICK SHERMAN, WITHROW
Position: WR
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170
The buzz: Committed to Purdue. Has clocked 4.55 in the 40 dash and is especially elusive after the catch. Caugh 36 passes for 498 yards and six touchdowns last season. He catches anything thrown his way, and has knack for getting open that can't be taught. Coach Doc Gamble says that, along with his football tools and smarts, there is no more competitive player than Sherman. He made an oral commitment to Purdue after getting many offers including Maryland, Michigan State and Cincinnati.
9. CHARLIE HATCHER, HAMILTON
Position: DL
Height: 6-2
Weight: 266
The buzz: An elite student (3.9 GPA), his top choices are Ohio State, Stanford, Miami (Ohio) and Michigan State.Indiana and Miami reportedly have chased him hardest, with Hatcher saying he wants to pick a school with a good engineering program. He has not been much publicized with Hamilton in a losing rut, but that could change with high-profile new coach Jim Place. Hatcher gets off blocks quickly, has a nose for the ball and has that extra "hustle" gear that defensive coaches love.
10. HOSEA SIMPSON, WINTON WOODS
Position: RB

Height: 5-9

Weight: 187

The buzz: He led the Cincinnati area with 1,674 yards rushing and scored 25 TDs last season and was Enquirer Division II player of the year. Strong and powerfully built, he has breakaway speed at 4.52 seconds in the 40 dash. Might be ranked higher if he were taller, but his sheer talent and productivity make him a Division I college prospect. As a sophomore in fall 2004, he rushed for 402 yards in one game. He is the rare player who can hit full speed on his first step, and once he gets through the line he simply outruns people.

Moeller Senior LB Bessey Dies in Car Crash

This was making the headlines this morning in Cincinnati --

Jordan Bessey - a senior LB on the Moeller Football team, with aspirations to play Division 1 Football in college, died in a high speed crash Monday ...

HAMILTON TWP. ? Jordan Bessey had all the tools of a top football prospect, his coach said. The 17-year-old had size, speed and a bright future.
That future was cut short Monday when the Moeller High School senior died in a car crash in Hamilton Township.
?He was a young man that was beginning to mature this year,? his Moeller head coach Bob Crable said. ?He was starting to understand what it meant to be a man and then this ? that?s the hardest

Bessey, of Maineville, was driving

Bessey wasn?t wearing a seat belt, said Sgt. Clint Arnold.

Excessive speed was the primary cause of the crash, Arnold said. After looking at damage to the car, he said he wouldn?t be surprised if Bessey was driving about 100 mph in the 35-to 45-mph zone.

The Enquirer - Area teams could return to title games

Ohio's championship weekend lacked any Greater Cincinnati squads in '06
BY TOM GROESCHEN - ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Cincinnati was shut out of the 2006 state football finals weekend, but we do not expect that to happen this year.

With St. Xavier, Anderson and Lemon-Monroe in the state semifinals, odds are we will not be blanked again. I am already stoked for my favorite road trip, 230 miles to Stark County (Canton/Massillon) in two weeks.

It seemed certain Colerain would get upstate in 2006 after beating St. Xavier in the Division I regional finals, but the Cardinals were upset the following week by Hilliard Davidson in the state semis.

Some info on some Cincinnati recruits:

High school sports

Many have asked: Where is St. X all-purpose football star Danny Milligan going to college?

Milligan said today that he has a home visit coming from UC this Thursday, and he has also been talking with West Virginia, Indiana and Miami (Ohio).

UC is interested in Milligan as a wide receiver and return man, Milligan said, with the Bearcats already having young kickers in the house. Indiana also is talking with Milligan along those lines (WR, returner), he said.

Colerain football players select schools

Two Colerain senior football players have made oral commitments to play football in college, Colerain coach Tom Bolden said tonight.

Quarterback Doug Reynolds (6-2, 196 pounds) has committed to Eastern Illinois, a Division I Football Championship Subdivision program (formerly Division I-AA).

Offensive lineman Thomas Good (6-2, 290 pounds) has committed to Saint Joseph's (Indiana), a Division II school.

Finneytown's Wise makes decision

Finneytown senior WR Von Wise has orally committed to play football at Eastern Illinois, Finneytown coach Eric Taylor said in an e-mail this afternoon.

Wise had 51 receptions for 1,073 yards and 10 touchdowns this past season. He led the area in receiving yards, according to Taylor.

Glen Este commitments

Glen Este's Brad Griffith, a 6'6" 230-pound tight end, has committed to Brown University. He was a two-year starter for Glen Este. He averaged 20.4 yards per catch and was known as a strong run blocker, Glen Este AD Dan Simmons said.

Glen Este's Josh Crawford, a 6'6", 210-pound split end, has committed to the University of Charleston. Crawford was also a two-year starter and averaged 17.1 yards per catch, Simmons said.

Wyoming commitments

Wyoming AD Jim Barre said that his school has two football commitments: Larry Black to Indiana (OL/DL) and Jordan Bright to Indiana State (DE).

If Sycamore is on a 4 pt scale and a 3.9 is not in the top 10% of the class ... I think they give out As way too liberally...I've seen various recruits with a GPA of 3.5 listed and have to raise their test scores in order to qualify.

They offered tons of AP and accelerated classes, which are weighted differently. An "A" in an AP class is a 4.5. I can assure you, they didn't give out A's liberally, at least when I went there.

But back to Bud... sorry to get off topic.

Very fast and seems to "glide" effortlessly?

Sounds a lot like Robert Smith to me. How does his running style compare to Mr. Smith's? I loved to watch that guy run the ball.

I agree w/you MrBillLucas. Especially at that school in that conference; Colerain, Princeton, the Lakotas, Hamilton, etc. Don't think there are any real weak teams in that conference, especially on defense! I'm buyin'!!

Hardly.

Sycamore is one of the finest public high schools in the state and the number of national merrit finalist it produces each year rivals St. Xavier and Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati.

Agreed. Sycamore is the most affluent public school in Ohio. They compare favorably with many private schools, in part due to their significant Jewish and Muslim populations (who wouldn't feel as comfortable going to a Jesuit school).

I remember their facilities, both for academics and athletics, as being ridiculously nice for a high school (this was 10 years ago). The entire school was carpeted. The only school that I have personally seen with better facilities is Harvard Westlake in Beverly Hills.

From the wikipedia entry for Sycamore, some of the highlights of their academics:

99.6% went on to further education in college.[citation needed]...

In 1999, Sycamore had a record 35 National Merit Scholars, the highest number for any public school in Ohio.[citation needed] That year, four students also scored perfect scores on the major college entrance examinations, including the only two perfect ACT scores in Ohio that year (out of sixteen nationwide)...

In 2007, Sycamore had 31 National Merit Scholars, the highest number for any public school in Ohio.[citation needed]...

Sycamore regularly places nationally in the National Science Bowl...

It's also interesting to note, from looking at the wikipedia entry, that Sycamore's recent success in football parallels Bud Golden's years as their feature back.
