Great way to open the season. Easy win, but not a blowout. Plenty of mistakes by a young squad so plenty to review on tape. But the game was never in danger. This entire team should have a lot of confidence right now.
I am reminded after watching yesterdays game that College Football is far and away the absolute best sport in the world. There is nothing like it.
Don’t be fooled by yesterday’s game. UC is a good team and will have a solid year.
Who took over playcalling yesterday? That was unlike any Jim Tressel offense I have ever seen.
Having never seen a spring game, I knew of Bam Childress and his reputation but I had rarely seen his slipperyness in action. IF this kid can continue to hold onto the ball, he will have a great senior season.
Game 1 and we see two kickoff returns better than any we saw last year. Maurice Hall really looked to be running well. I hope this guy is healthy after all his struggles last year. This warrior deserves a great senior season, and he got it off to a wonderful start. He was very close to breaking at least one of those two 40+ yard returns.
Holmes seemed relatively quiet. Then I check the stats at the end of the game and he has close to 100 yards. That play that he and Troy Smith hooked up on was a thing of beauty.
There seemed to be a buzz when Ginn entered the game. The kid just has an air about him. He almost made a fabulous play when he was pushed out of bounds.
I was pleased with the running game. Flydell had the big run and was solid the rest of the way. Pittman looks like he is the real deal. There is plenty of room for improvement, but I liked what I saw.
Ryan Hamby is going to have a monster year. A young QB who will get blitzed a lot and appears able to find his release valve, a stable of WRs to spread the field out and a solid pass catcher in Hamby may lead to all-american status.
Zwick and Smith both looked about like I expected for a first game. Zwick threw a few ugly balls and made some mistakes, but he showed he has a lot of potential. Smith has an absolute cannon and a ton of athletic ability, but sure threw a pretty ball on the Holmes fade. The game did not seem as much under control when he was in though. Both give me great hope for the season. And both have some good film to watch now.
I have a hunch this defense may be as good as the last two, if not better. They were impressive against what should have been a very good offensive team. Fox is an all-american corner. I did not hear much about the rest of the defensive backfield except Whitner and Youtoby, which is a very good thing.
DAnimal looked good. Kid is gonna have a great year and fulfill all that promise. But, he still may be the 3rd best linebacker on the team. Carpenter was fantastic and we all know about Hawk. All three could be All Bigten caliber and wouldn’t surprise me to see 2 of them all American caliber.
Turano looked good in his one punt, although I would have liked to see him keep it in the field of play. Just goes to show how spoiled we are from Groom and Sander. Coverage team on kickoffs was good, what little work they got. Nuge was as expected. I will be shocked if he doesn’t kick for 15 years in the league.
Playcalling was diverse and unexpected on both sides of the ball. Mistakes were made across the board, so there is room for improvement, but the skill level was obvious. This is going to be a fun year. Go Bucks!
