Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops soon may have to find a new offensive coordinator.

According to an ESPN.com report on Friday, San Diego State will name Sooners offensive coordinator Chuck Long its new coach.
The Aztecs fired Tom Craft on December 5 after a second straight losing season. San Diego State went 5-7 this year, including 4-4 in Mountain West Conference play, and was 19-29 in four years under Craft, who had one year remaining on his contract.

A star quarterback at Iowa, Long was the Heisman Trophy runner-up to Bo Jackson in 1985 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Long coached Iowa’s secondary from 1995-97 and the Hawkeyes’ quarterbacks coach from 1998-99 before joining Stoops’ staff.

Long has been Oklahoma’s quarterbacks coach since 1999 and also the Sooners’ offensive coordinator since 2002. This would be his first head coaching job.

According to the report, former Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers coach Dennis Erickson also was considered for the job.

Big 12 contender to....San Diego State. Talk about a downgrade.

Urban Meyer went from an assistant at a name school to the Head position at a mid-major. He is proof that the stay at the mid-major level can be short if you have the right kind of success. He has yet to prove that he can stay at the BCS level.

My favorite memory of Chuck Long was on a rainy evening in 1985. Watched from the North End Zone, C-Deck. I hope his luck with the Aztecs is better than it was that night.
