Chiefs at Broncos(-3.5)

Tebow just got fricking mugged up around the face mask and his head. The defensive player had his hand inside his helmet and there was no call. This is where the NFL needs to start fining the referees. There is no consistency in the calls. Everyone knows that if that were one of the elite QBs the flag would have been out in no time...

Definitely a missed call but the minute the NFL starts fining refs for missed calls no one will apply for the job.

The problem is that there is no accountability for poor refereeing\calls in a majority of sports anymore. In my opinion, it is starting to deter the quality of the games and can make them frustrating to watch at times.

I could care less whether Denver wins, but the referee was standing right there and it was painfully obvious what occurred on the play. To not throw a flag was utterly ridiculous.

What do you think the role of instant replay and the increase in picture quality of broadcasts has played on this?

Personally, I am not a fan of instant replay in any sport. Do I think that higher picture quality makes penalties easier for a fan to detect? In some cases yes, but in the mentioned case, it was obvious at live speed.

Yes there is. One of the best refs in the NFL (Hoculi) blew a call a year or two ago and ended up missing the playoffs altogether. This was the year after he'd reffed the Super Bowl. Those playoff checks matter even to the refs.

I'm pretty sure the league rates the refs as they make calls.
