Hobbit is a go

The Associated Press have just announced New Line and Peter Jackson have reached an agreement (at last) and he will act as executive producer with the director yet to be named.

After their ?disagreement? was settled last Tuesday, New Line have had to move fast before the rights to The Hobbit movie returned to the previous owner, Saul Zaentz. Zaentz had already stated Jackson would be directing if this happened.

?I?m very pleased that we?ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line,? Jackson?s statement read. ?We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth.?

Two Hobbit movies will be filmed at the same time, similar to how the 3 ?Lord of the Rings? films were shot. Production will start in 2009 with a release planned for 2010, with the second part the following year.

Lets not kid ourselves though, Jackson has been given a role to appease the ?Rings? fans, the special effects team and of course, the original cast of whom many may well be needed for at least one of the Hobbit movies.

Very ironic timing as I had commented to my wife just this weekend that I wondered when they would get around to making the Hobbit.

As for the two movie idea. Sounds rather obsurd. There isn't enough material from the book to justify two movies, and if they are going to just invent new material, LOTR book fans are going to hate it! I already dislike the bastardization of Prof. Tolkien's work that the LOTR films were, I don't want to see what else they have in store.

The hold up has been the lawsuit between Jackson and New Line over royalties.

The rights were also about to revert back to the guy who licensed them to New Line and whom had stated unequivacably that Jackson would be the director once the rights came back to him.

He had also recently filed a lawsuit against New Line for the same reasons as Peter Jackson.

So essentially New Line was under the gun to get a deal done or they were going to lose the whole shebang.

Keep in mind we are now talking about a franchise that has made close to $3 Billion in worldwide revenues.

The powers that by are hardly concerned about "Tolkien purists" at this point.

As much as I enjoyed the trilogy I certainly have my issues with them also and invariably those arise whenever Peter decided to add a little "Jackson" influence to the plot.

He flat out dropped the ball on a couple of occasions...Gandalf facing the Witch King of Angmar at the gates of Minas Tirith...and Aragorn's confrontation with Sauron via the Palantir.

Not to mention turning the army of the dead into "slimer and his green cohorts".

My hobbit name: Dimple Bumbleroot of Haysend

My elvish name: Nienna Sirfalas

Find out yours!

blah blah hobbit movie blah blah peter jackson blah blah blah... Ooo, name generator!

Hobbit Name - Mungo Proudfoot.

Mungo just pawn in the game of life ...

The elf name sounded much "cooler" but you can't beat getting Mungo and a Kevin Bacon like LOTR to Blazing Saddles connection

That site gave me my elfish name as Finrod N?nharma
However, I translated my name into elvish several years ago. Unfortunately, I do not remember my last name, but I know for a fact my first name is Rinion.

Not what I hear. Rosie's mom was a Super freak!! Which is why Sam Gangee wanted to get Rosie out of the tavern owner's hands and set her up in Bagshot Row with her bitches....

Anyway, Rosie's mom is the one who did Goldie Does Gondor, Behind the Green Dwarf and all of those Hobbit and Ent Sex Movies like "Gaffer the Gardener and his Hoe. Well - the Ent wives had run off....

Word is that the second flick is going to be "new" filler material that will act as a seque between Hobbit & LoTR.

I also heard it could be a linked story from the silmarillion or the Histories of Middle Earth. Personally Id like to see the Taming of the Shire and the extended story from the Appendices (Sam as Mayor, Pippin as Thain and Meriadoc as Marshal of Buckland.

I've seen that as well but even then the implication is that the material will be used to transition between Hobbit & LoTR...which makes me wonder WTF?

On the other hand give me Balin's expedition to Moria and I am fuckin' sold!

I am also puzzeled by the idea of creating a transition between Hobbit and LOTR. Why would there need to be one?

A much better idea would be to have the Hobbit as the second movie with the first one focusing on the Dwarves awakening the balrog in Moria, the war between the Dwarves and Orcs over Moria, the Dwarves exile to the Lonely Mountain, and then the coming of Smaug. This would set the Hobbit up wonderfully. All of this stuff is outlined in the appendexices to LOTR and in the Unfinished Tales.

One aspect of the Hobbit I hope they do show, although it is only mentioned in the book, is the attack upon Dol Guldur by the White Council and the withdrawling of Sauron. It would be pretty cool to see Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, and a batallion of elves lead by Elrond and/or Galadriel work together against Sauron and the Nazgul (not sure they were actually involved in the attack, but there is nothing to say they were not, and it possible at least one of them was, as Dol Guldur remained under the control of Khamul, one of the nine).
