Some questions getting on Weis' nerves

January 3, 2007
BY VAUGHN McCLURE Staff Reporter
NEW ORLEANS -- Don't call Charlie Weis a liar. He's liable to get a little edgy. You could hear it in the Notre Dame coach's tone during his pre-Sugar Bowl news conference Tuesday as he once again addressed rumors related to the New York Giants. ''I can only say it so many times,'' Weis said. ''Every coach is perceived to be a liar. 'Well, Weis will say it, but he's a liar.' Believe it or not, there are some people who aren't liars.

Not only an offensive genius, this man is a PR master.

Consider my favorite part of the interview, when he momentarily slips and an inconvenient truth slips out: '''Excuse me, we're not coming here to be competitive,' Weis snapped."

I think he recovered nicely in saying that they should rephrase the question so that it was about Notre Dame winning. Of course, lots of folks believe Notre Dame will not be competitive, but Charlie makes such a fantastic recovery. Well done, coach!

I tell you, this guy is a PR genius.

My guess is that Charlie will be wanting more $$$ to stay at ND since Saban is getting over $4M per year at Alabama:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Weis can't shake NFL suitors

Despite 10-year deal, speculation will swirl around ND coach

NEW ORLEANS -- When Notre Dame signed football coach Charlie Weis to a 10-year contract extension midway through his first season in 2005, the deal was intended to quiet rumors Weis eventually would return to the NFL.

The contract, which went into effect for the current season, effectively binds Weis to the Irish through 2015.

His contract, worth in the neighborhood of $2.5 million a year, according to a source with knowledge of the matter, does not include a buyout provision, which means Notre Dame could demand its full value--close to $25 million--if it didn't want to release Weis.

If, as expected, Nick Saban leaves the Miami Dolphins for the multimillion-dollar offer Alabama has made him, the move's trickle-down effect could raise the pay scale for coaches in charge of the country's high-profile teams.

Any contact by the Giants, even if informal and indirect, could provide leverage for Weis to renegotiate a contract that is worth less than those of Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, Texas' Mack Brown, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz and USC's Pete Carroll.

On the other hand, Notre Dame might not be inclined to renegotiate the contract of its highest-paid employee.

"My life is heading toward being here until Charlie graduates from Notre Dame," Weis said. "When he finishes, hopefully I'll have enough money to go lay on some beach and drink pina coladas.

"Until that time, I am going to be at Notre Dame."
