Changes to Ohio State's Gameday

neomits

Senior
So I attended my first home game of the season this past weekend. I had read and heard that there were going to be some slight changes to the normal "tradition" of things during the course of the game and wanted to see what other people's feeling were on the additions/changes.

Here is what I noticed or read.
  • A new "Block O" band formation during the Buckeyes' entrance onto the field. - I'm kinda liking this one for right now. I'll need to see it a few more times, but its very original and kinda cool to see as the band "Block O" opens up to reveal the team running out.
  • Song change during kick-off's. Now playing White Stripes - "7 Nation Army" - This change I despise. Plenty of other schools, sports, and even countries play this during games in which usually the crowd will participate singing Ohhh Oh Oh Ohhhh to the tune. Ohio State has had a tradition of doing Ohhhhhhh - H -I - O at kick off and this very much interferes and confuses that. I do not like copying from other programs, and Penn State uses this VERY much during their games.
  • Use of the entire video board for enhanced video clips and game highlights. - Maybe this isn't completely new, but I noticed the video and highlights during the game being a lot better and clearer. Last year I wondered if Ohio Stadium would have to upgrade to a bigger HD video screen (see Texas' massive video monitor), but after seeing this weekend's replays, I think it looks great.
  • New PA announcement during Ohio State first downs. Every time Ohio State gets a first, the scoreboard announcer says, ?Gain of (blank) on the play and that?s another Buckeeeeeeeeeye ? (crowd response) first down.? - This one is probably my top hated change. Again, this is something done by plenty of other programs and I hate that we seem to be "copying" from other schools. There is no need to force crowd interaction. The Stadium Announcer over the years has seemed to get more and more involved in relaying information, which I haven't liked in general. Just give me the basics and if I want more I'll check the video board. PLEASE GET RID OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT.
  • In addition, new student-only seating in the south stands will complement the current student section at the north end of the stadium to create an energizing atmosphere behind each end zone. - This won't go into effect until Big 10 season play when the students show up, but I'm very excited for how this might turn out. An all student section South-Stands has Looooong been needed. I can really see this only improving the atmosphere of the game day/night experience and noise level.
Thoughts/comments? Any other changes you have noticed that you like or dislike?

You mean the new student seating in the North stands will compliment the current student seating in the South stands... correct?

My roommate went to the game and he said that he also disliked the new first down announcement immensely. Hopefully they get rid of it sooner rather than later, it reminds me of something they would do at a high school stadium.

The student sections/Block O have been doing, AND THAT'S ANOTHER BUCKEYE FIRST DOWN since I've been going there (started in '05). They may have been doing this before '05 but I didn't sit in the student sections when I went. So it's not completely new

Maybe it's spawning from Block O since they like to do their own things every so often. I've sat in the north Student section for every home game the past 5+ years and have always only heard the stadium announcer with "First doooooowwwn... Ohio State!"

I was at the YSU game, and also thought the first down announcement was very forced and little league. If Block O wants to do it, I'm all for it, but let the cheers be started by the crowd.

While I'm at it, I hate the "Okay, it's time for the O-H-I-O cheer!" and such over the PA as well. Of all the cheers that *don't* need help getting started, that's probably at the top of the list!

Piped-in music in general can go as well, especially in the case of kickoffs.

I like the new entrance for the team. That's changed multiple times in the last 10 years, so it's not like there's some longstanding tradition being messed with there. The new one is unique to OSU, which is always a plus.

No, I think they are making the entire South Stands Student-only. It used to be mixed in with single ticket holders and even a large portion of the visiting team. Now I'm guessing it'll be entire Student Seating.

I don't think the North student section will be expanded beyond its current use. Where I sat with a student ticket the past 5+ years = Sections 5 A,B and C through about 13 A,B and C

No that's not true....I'm pretty sure there are still other non student seats in the SS. Where did you get the information about making the whole SS students?

As far as I know, the only changes in student sections is they are making the 2nd Block O in the north stands

Looks like the 2nd Block O might be coming later down the road. Block O used to be at the north end and moved to the south stands in 2001 I think.

Slight changes expected at Ohio State home football games - News and Information - The Ohio State University

"In addition, new student-only seating in the south stands will complement the current student section at the north end of the stadium to create an energizing atmosphere behind each end zone.

"Ohio State provides more student tickets for football than any other school in the nation (30,000), so we would like to capitalize on this enthusiasm and create an intimidating atmosphere for the visiting team regardless of which direction they are heading at any point in a game," said Bill Jones, assistant athletics director for ticketing with the Ohio State Athletics Department.

With this change, the entire south stands will be student seating in addition to those in the north/northwest sections of the stadium. This will create two continuous student sections in either end of the stadium. The Department of Athletics has also started discussions with student leaders to create a second "Block O" section for students in the north end zone to allow for coordination of cheers and activities between the two student sections."

Hmmm, that's news to me about the whole SS being students....But I know 100% for a fact that there is a Block O in South Stands as well in North Stands. When I tried to buy tickets it had an option for North or South Block O

They can get rid of the smile/kiss cam crap and the that's another OSU "First Down". They are both very minor league type things.

I like the Block O for the team entrance as long as it doesn't get in the way of the team wanting to get onto the field when they are fired up and ready to go.

The longstanding tradition of "Hang on Sloopy" and the OH IO chant to start the fourth quarter needs some energy. You couldn't hear the band playing at all let alone the crowd....

I did not hear Carmen at all during the game, which used to be a very long standing tradition....

I've been to both games so far and I don't know if it was the way we were playing against OU or most of the fans couldn't stand the first down thing but it definitely dropped off from the opening game. I will be attending the Troy game as well, so I hope by then it is forgotten.

The piped in music worked well with Nugent but I am not so sure about the White Stripes - "7 Nation Army" crap. It's not original as was already stated.

The Student sections in both endzones should cause some havoc for visiting teams but I sure was glad that when I attended OSU we were able to sit around the 20 for my senior year. And it also means that by some grace of god I do get a Big 10 game for my alumni ticket again I won't get stuck in SS.

As far as the seating goes

There will be 15,000 students in the South stands and 15,000 students in the north/northwest stands with the official Block O sections in the middle of each

The visiting team appears to now have the entire northeast corner, they used to be split between a section in the northeast side in A deck (by there band) and a sliver of the southwest stands, now they will be lined up straight up the Northeast corner from A to C deck
