So I attended my first home game of the season this past weekend. I had read and heard that there were going to be some slight changes to the normal "tradition" of things during the course of the game and wanted to see what other people's feeling were on the additions/changes.
Here is what I noticed or read.
Here is what I noticed or read.
- A new "Block O" band formation during the Buckeyes' entrance onto the field. - I'm kinda liking this one for right now. I'll need to see it a few more times, but its very original and kinda cool to see as the band "Block O" opens up to reveal the team running out.
- Song change during kick-off's. Now playing White Stripes - "7 Nation Army" - This change I despise. Plenty of other schools, sports, and even countries play this during games in which usually the crowd will participate singing Ohhh Oh Oh Ohhhh to the tune. Ohio State has had a tradition of doing Ohhhhhhh - H -I - O at kick off and this very much interferes and confuses that. I do not like copying from other programs, and Penn State uses this VERY much during their games.
- Use of the entire video board for enhanced video clips and game highlights. - Maybe this isn't completely new, but I noticed the video and highlights during the game being a lot better and clearer. Last year I wondered if Ohio Stadium would have to upgrade to a bigger HD video screen (see Texas' massive video monitor), but after seeing this weekend's replays, I think it looks great.
- New PA announcement during Ohio State first downs. Every time Ohio State gets a first, the scoreboard announcer says, ?Gain of (blank) on the play and that?s another Buckeeeeeeeeeye ? (crowd response) first down.? - This one is probably my top hated change. Again, this is something done by plenty of other programs and I hate that we seem to be "copying" from other schools. There is no need to force crowd interaction. The Stadium Announcer over the years has seemed to get more and more involved in relaying information, which I haven't liked in general. Just give me the basics and if I want more I'll check the video board. PLEASE GET RID OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT.
- In addition, new student-only seating in the south stands will complement the current student section at the north end of the stadium to create an energizing atmosphere behind each end zone. - This won't go into effect until Big 10 season play when the students show up, but I'm very excited for how this might turn out. An all student section South-Stands has Looooong been needed. I can really see this only improving the atmosphere of the game day/night experience and noise level.
