Change at Quarterback For Cleveland?

Egads. Forget everything I said before. Throw Charlie in there, lets see what he's got. After watching that wounded, heavily intoxicated duck flail through the air as time expired I realized I can't watch this shit anymore.

QB Charlie Frye

Date: Oct 31, 2005

Fred Greetham reports on the day-after buzz at the Browns training facility in Berea, Ohio. The quarterback situation is foremost in a lot of minds, but Kyle Richardson will find himself with some competition in the near future as well. As usual, you can find the day's news FIRST and FREE at BerniesInsiders.com!

BEREA – For the third week in a row questions are being asked about a change at quarterback.
Is it time for Charlie Frye to make his debut at home this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans? or should the Browns continue to stay the course and let him learn from the side line?
After Sunday’s home game with the Titans, the Browns travel to Pittsburgh to play a nationally televised ESPN game on Sunday Night the following week. Crennel said the schedule has nothing to do with the decision.
“Whether we’re on national television or not has nothing to do with the decision,” Crennel said.
Against Houston, Trent Dilfer was 12-of-25 for 185 yards with one touchdown. He was sacked twice and had a QB rating of 86.2. For the season, Dilfer’s QB rating is now 76.9.
Crennel said nothing is for sure this week.
“It looked like (Dilfer) played a little bit better,” Crennel said. “I’m sure he’ll tell you he left a couple of plays on the field. We’ve been talking and looking at that position. I don’t think anything is set in stone, but we’ll do what is best for the team, but I think he did better.”
Crennel didn’t say what he was thinking.
“I’m not saying what way I’m leaning,” Crennel said.
Dilfer knows the debate on the quarterback goes with the job.
“It’s like this in the NFL,” Dilfer said. “That’s the job. Early in my career it mattered more to me, but ultimately we’re judged if we win or lose.
“You must have thick skin and be resilient to be a quarterback.”
One big question is the Browns have to get Frye some time at some point this season to see how he performs in a real NFL game.
“With any young player you have on your team, at some point, you want to see what you have and you have to put him out there,” Crennel said.
This year’s draft at quarterback appears strong and the Browns could have one of the top picks.
“Whoever, is out there is out there,” Crennel said. “Hopefully, we won’t have the first pick in the draft and have to make that decision.”
Frye was diplomatic when asked about the possibility of him seeing his first action this Sunday.
“That’s a coach’s decision,” Frye said. “Until I’m told something otherwise, I’m the backup.
“I support Trent,” he said. “Every week I’m one play away from playing and I approach it that way.”
Crennel said if a rookie is in the game the opponent would throw blitzes at him all day as he did last year as the defensive coordinator of the Patriots when he faced the Browns and rookie Josh McCown.
Frye said he’s ready for the blitzes.
“That’s what we prepare for,” Frye said. “It’s all about knowing where your hot reads are.”
Crennel asked what would the pros and cons of switching to Frye.
“One of the things positive you would anticipate it would be more of a spark for the offense,” Crennel said. “The negative would be whoever the opponent is will bring every blitz known to man. If he could survive it would be a positive. If he couldn’t do that, that would be a negative.”
If the decision to go to Frye is made, Braylon Edwards thinks it would provide a lift.
“He would bring excitement and add an energy level because it would be his first game,” Edwards said. “He would be a young guy getting his shot.”
QUICK HITS
Romeo the Dutch Boy: Crennel used the analogy of sticking one’s finger in the dike to stop the leaks in describing the team.
“Sometimes, you think you have one area doing ok, and then you stick a finger in the dike and a leak springs up some where else,” he said. “Eventually, we’ll be able to plug up the leaks and win. If we can get it all together at the same time, we can come up with a victory. Until that happens, we’ll be trying to come up with that one play to win a game.”
New Punter?: Crennel said the Browns might bring in a new punter to compete with Kyle Richardson, who averaged just 33.0 yards on four punts Sunday. For the season, Richardson is averaging 41.9 yards on 33 punts. His longest is 61 yards.
“We’ll look at our short list and bring in some guys and look at them,” Crennel said.
Richardson had a punt for 19- and 10-yards Sunday to put the Browns in poor field position.
Injury Update: It doesn’t appear the Browns suffered any major injuries on Sunday. OL Joe Andruzzi left with a knee injury, but returned. KR Joshua Cribbs had a stinger, but also returned. CB Ray Mickens (groin), but should be alright. S Chris Crocker (shoulder) will get an x-ray and might have an MRI done. RB William Green had x-rays on his ankle.

Not to hijack the thread but since it was mentioned in the article. I read this morning that Andy Groom is one of those free agent punters coming in for tryouts. But too busy at work to get an URL for the article.

Thank goodness... I sit and watch Richardson this year and Frost last year, shank punt after punt and I just say, we have these idiots and Andy Groom doesn't have a fucking job?

Anyway... sign somebody, anybody.

Bob Dylan said it best. "When ya ain't got nothin, ya ain't got nothin to lose". We're supposed to have good WR's and Braylon gets his first touch in the third quarter and Northcutt gets his first drop in the fourth? Edwards comments lead me to believe he's getting more that a little frustrated. Also, beyond the Marshall boys and big Ben it's not like the NFL is overflowing with MAC quarterbacks. Might be time to see if the kid can play, or if we have another Luke on our hands. I was at the Detroit game and there were already an obvious number of empty seats in the house and I don't expect the Tennessee game to be any different unless some radical changes are made. Me and Fadeproof will be there but I sure don't blame anybody for throwing in the towel unless Crennel pulls the trigger. Damn sure need a punter too and AG is the obvious choice for this Buckeye fan.

RB Reuben Droughns

</TD><TD noWrap width=3></TD><TD vAlign=top>By Site Staff

Date: Nov 1, 2005

According to links provided on the Bernie's Insiders tipline, there has been a waiver, a DUI arrest, and more support for Trent Dilfer in the last 24 hours.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
Tuesday is the Browns day off in Berea, but that doesn't mean that there has been a lack of news on the team.
Over the last twelve hours, Browns fans providing info to the Bernie's Insiders Tipline have helped us stay up-to-date with several items of Browns news which have broken on the local Cleveland airwave. The Bernie's Insiders tipline is available via our menu systems or via the tabbed "Newswire" widget on the front page of BerniesInsiders.com.
Here are the stories which have emerged over the course of the day. We will be discussing these during tonight's Bernie's Insiders Radio Program.

1. Reuben Droughns Arrested for DUI
According to reports on the local news (Fox 8 in Cleveland), Browns RB Reuben Droughns was picked up on suspicion of driving under intoxication (DUI) last night in Cleveland. This is currently being discussed in the Watercooler, where long-time visitor Glenn brought it to our attention. Thanks to RamboDawg for the tip!
We would like to stress that very little information about this situation has actually been brought forth at this time. Local news stations, who have a presence at Cleveland's justice center, have a tendency to jump on stories like this and herald them in their evening newscast. It isn't known what, if any, impact these charges will have on the Cleveland Browns.

2. TE Billy Miller Released
The Browns acquired Billy Miller shortly after the start of the season when the team was hit by yet-another injury at the tight end position, namely to TE Aaron Shea. Since Shea has returned to the Browns line-up, Miller has spent the last several weeks inactive. Thanks to "JakeTheSnake" for the tip!
The Browns have kept Miller inactive the last several weeks, and he didn't distinguish himself during his opportunities with the team early in the season.
At this point, the team has not announced who will take Miller's place on the active roster. We reported exclusively in Ask the Insiders that the team had tried out several player last week. The Browns have also said that they are going to look at some additional punters, although it's not considered too likely that the team would carry multiple punters on the roster.
Here is the team's official press release:
The Cleveland Browns have terminated the contract of TE Billy Miller, the club announced today.
Miller, 6-3 and 245 lbs., joined the Browns one week before the start of the regular season and appeared in three games this season, including one start at Green Bay on Sept. 18. Miller did not have any catches this season as he was used primarily as a blocking tight end.
Miller is a six-year veteran of the NFL with Denver, Houston and Cleveland and has totaled 114 receptions for 1,212 yards and seven touchdowns during his NFL career.

3. Savage Vows that Dilfer Will Start on Sunday
On local radio station WTAM, Browns GM Phil Savage told the team's flagship station that Trent Dilfer will start this weekend against the Tennessee Titans. There had been considerable media speculation, fueled in part by non-committal remarks by Browns head coach Romeo Crennel on Monday, that the would consider starting rookie QB Charlie Frye. Bernie's Insiders will be providing text of Crennel's Monday remarks in a separate article.
Thanks to "P. Jewett" for the tip on the Bernie's Insiders tipline this morning!

dilfer will start this weekend against tenn. he will probably look mediocre at best. he will then be shredded against pittsburgh the following sunday night, thereby leaving the door open for a qb change against a weaker slate later.

Charlie Frye = Eric Zeier </p>A Cleveland scrub that fans are excited about for no reason who will completely suck when given the chance to play.

Somone seriuosly needs to rethink this whole "sober" thing... I realize that substance abuse isn't for everyone... but I'm starting to think it IS for you.

Besides... if Sober's right, we win (Matt Leinert)... if he's wrong we still win.... and we've got a quarterback.
