CFN's Offensive Unit Rankings

bkochmc

Assistant Coach
I didn't see this anywhere else... CFN has rated our offense as #1 overall.
Overall Offense - #1
1. Ohio State
Good-bye Tressel ball, and hello Tressel ball with a kick. QB Troy Smith should make the spread offense sing making big play after big play with his legs as well as his arm. The receivers are big, fast, and talented with Ted Ginn Jr. appearing to be ready to blossom into a superstar wideout. The backfield is full of talent with star freshman Chris Wells ready to push possible All-Big Ten runner Antonio Pittman. The line might be the best in the Jim Tressel's six years in Columbus with a world of talent, especially at tackle.

Quarterbacks - #3
3. Ohio State
Troy Smith will forever have a place in the hearts of Buckeye fans for his performances against Michigan over the last two seasons, and now he has to lead the potent offense to a national title level. Knowing the offense, he'll put up huge numbers as both a runner and passer. Justin Zwick could start and keep the offense humming. While he doesn't have too much mobility, he's arm is strong enough to keep the passing attack moving. Todd Boeckman and Robbie Schoenhoft are nice reserves who'll need time to be groomed for next year's battle for the starting job.

Wide Receivers - #12

Offensive Line - #2
2. Ohio State
It's amazing the Buckeyes have had the success they've had over the last few seasons without the benefit of a killer offensive line. Despite struggling at times this spring, this year's group has the potential to be the best by far in the Jim Tressel era if all the parts play as well as expected. Alex Boone is an All-American waiting to happen at left tackle, while Kirk Barton is on the verge of All-Big Ten stardom on the other side. There's a little bit of movement to get the best players on the field with starting tackle Doug Datish taking over at center to get Boone on the field. The depth is big and athletic with enough options to play around with several different combinations.

CFN's "cover page" has a closeup picture of Ginn running with the ball, I'd assume for a touchdown.

I'd be fine with number 19 if the teams ranked ahead were clearly better...but you've got Navy, Northwestern, Tennessee, Iowa and others ahead of the Bucks.

Offensive Line at #2 is probably too high, but it has that potential. WR's at 12 is about right.

It's all good though. The bottom line is that this is THE year in which the offense will be expected to carry the team, as opposed to the defense and special teams. Expectations are high...let's hope they fulfill them!:lift:

Naw, now come on. I read BP and even I know that NIU has the number one ranked running attack in the country. This can't be serious.

But I can be.

By the end of the year the Pittman/Wells show will be recognized as among the country's best. I think it is hard for folks to give a rating to a freshman who hasn't seen the field in an offense that can just hurt you so many ways because it is so diversified. The #1 ranking on offense is saying that to me.

Yeah, 19th seems rediculously low to me too, but I love playing the underdog. If they want to think we're still a mediocre running team, let them think that. We apparently have the #2 offensive line (seemed a little high to me) to block for stable of RB's that includes a 1,300+ yard rusher and two former #1 RB's in the country coming out of school (Mo Wells held the title there for a minute too). And that's not even counting the rushing prowess of Troy Smith, or the fact that we have a couple experienced FB's coming back to block for them and get an occasional carry.

#19?

Tokin?

"It's like that dog that you've had around the house for 10-12 years. You say sit, you say lay down and that dog does it, you own that dog. That's what Tressel is to LLoyd Carr, because he owns the wolverines."
-Mark May, ESPN

MM said that? unbelievable, and unbelievable that he said something good about the bucks.

:oh: :io: <!-- / sig -->

I'm not sure about our backs at 19, that seems way to low. Also, I'm not sure of our line at 2, that seems a bit high. We'll see, but I'm not sure we have the 2nd best line the country this year. They'll be damn good, but I'm not sure if they are at #2. Top 15.....yes........top 2........probably not at this point. Ask me in midseason. :wink2:

The video is on ESPN.com right now...i'm not sure if it's possible to link the exact video but it you go here , in the ESPN Motion window on the right side, it's in the video labeled "College Football Preview:Rivalry Week". Not only does he offer up this gem of a quote about Tressel and Carr, but both analysts picked Ohio State over Michigan and MM went on to say that the Bucks would run away with it and it has the possibility to get ugly in the 4th quarter. I was shocked.

Too bad that ESPN decided I needed to sit through three commercials (including the Rolaids soft-chew one twice) before my patience ran out and I closed it out...that's right, three fuckin' commericals on a streaming video clip and I still didn't get to the clip.
