by my Count if it had to be broke down this way OSU's competition would win going head to head 5 out of the 11 weeks...... Even if I'm just being a complete buckeye domer there's NO WAY OSU is #24....... when you face 5-6 ranked teams a year you shouldn't be that low... especially when 3 are in the top 5.

How can you have a schedule strenght when you don't even know how the teams will play this season? Just show me the sos when the season is over.

Of course, in the above schedule comparison, home and away must be a consideration.

What a pooly written article, some of his top schools play a junk schedule. He surely gives the ACC some love doesn't he? We've got 3 top ten teams in the Big Ten this year......possibly 4. I don't think any other conference in college football will beat that.

Wow - the Tom Friend Award (Dryden) is right!

Another perfect example of someone who knows NOTHING about sports publishing their "expert analysis" on the subject. As you guys have noted, the whole premise of his conference ranking formula is such a joke that it makes no sense at all, yet he presents it such that its logical perfection is self-evident.
How to get your article published for a major network sports article:
1. First step is to have your conclusion embedded in advance
2. Arrange "facts" by only using data which supports item 1.
3. Come up with a "formula" which utilizes your "facts" and "data" based on false premises and "proves" your preconceived conclusion.

Hey, wait - this sounds like the perfect way to become the next Dan Rather!

Most say the Big East is weak, and WVU really doesn’t play anyone? But this CBS article says otherwise? Which is it? or is the truth somewhere in between? – DPJ

A: What do you think? West Virginia plays at Syracuse, Wofford, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, at Rutgers, Louisville, at South Florida, Connecticut, at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Rutgers, who tied West Virginia for the number three spot in the article, plays at Illinois, Villanova, at Buffalo, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, at Syracuse, at Connecticut, Navy, South Florida, at Louisville, Cincinnati. In other words, someone over there should’ve done some serious tweaking to the formula before publishing it.

I have no interest in dogging anyone else’s stuff. However, it’s annoying to no end that we’ve had to endure a bazillion e-mails from chirping Big East fans based on this one piece.

FRankly, Bill I am very surprised Fiutak was that kind.

I did like this part concerning Wisconsin -- later in the column.

I am a life-long fan of the Wisconsin Badgers. who struggled through the Don Morton years(barely).....and well, basically, the entire 80's. So how come the Badgers are forgotten every year before the season starts despite 3 Rose Bowl trips under Barry Alvarez?? They are never considered as potential B10 champs. Nobody ever wants to pick them. Is Wisconsin just un-marketable? Un-sexy?....What's the deal?? Pete, do you think the Badgers are unsexy? My girlfriend thinks Bucky's hot!! – BM

A: I used to know a guy who was Bucky Badger. Trust me, he wasn’t sexy. Why hasn’t Wisconsin been considered among the Big Ten favorites over the past few years? Simple, it hasn’t been one of the Big Ten’s top teams, and that includes last year’s overrated group with the line that lived off one huge game against Penn State. We’re now six years removed from the last Rose Bowl, and Wisconsin, considering some very talented, very experienced teams, has underachieved at times. There’s no excuse for the 2000 team to have only finished 9-4. The better thought, at this point, is why Wisconsin isn’t a yearly powerhouse considering all the past success under Alvarez. Why isn’t Wisconsin doing what Iowa is doing? Why can’t Alvarez get one above-average quarterback to work with the great receivers he usually gets? Everyone respects Wisconsin in the Big Ten, but it’s just a very good, above-average program.

As someone who knows something about statistical modeling, I am amazed that anyone would publish such drivel. The formula falls apart from the first baseline unit.

This is a serious embarrassment to CBS Sportsline.
