Head Coach
Back with the fourth installment of this years season. Sorry it took so long, but I have been without internet for a week or so. Also I don't have a vcr yet, so I don't have the tape, so I wont have the overall breakdown, like usual, but patchwork will work.
Offense:
Once again the O didnt get in a rhythm until the second half when once again Pitt woke us up and got us going with a couple big runs.
QB's: B+
Smith struggled for alot of the game. He was really not seeing the field well after that INT he threw. He did overcome the adversity and make the spectacular play. Overall he did what he had to do, to get us out of the game with a W. That is what a leader is suppossed to do.
RB's: A+ b/c Pitt once again got us started today.
Pittman - He seems to have that knack to spark us when we need it. I just love to sit back and watch him run. It is a thing of beauty to watch him run thru people and around people.
Beanie Wells - He did exactally what he was asked of today. When he was brought in to pick up the yd or two in short yardage he did just that.
WR's - A-
Ginn - He didnt have the overall numbers he usually has, but after the first deep ball you knew that Tress was going to be reluctant to air it out again. Kinda took Ginn out of the game. He will be back in full force this weekend. lets hope for dry weather in Iowa.
Gonzo - Gonzo being Gonzo.
Robo - He has gotten his name out there now, with that big catch that he had. His body control on that ball was amazing how he slowed down a little to hold off the defender and then looked the ball in. He is probably the most technically sound WR we have on the team. Helps when dad is a WR coach.
Hartline - Once again making another solid catch and run after the catch.
TE/FB: - A-
Nicol - another solid day blocking, and wasnt used as much in the passing game. I think we will see him more this week.
White - The first down grab that he snagged in between 2 defenders was a huge play.
OL - Incomplete.
At times Smith was under more pressure than he has been all year, and at times Pittman had huge gaping holes. I want to say they won the battle in the second and lost it in the first. Overall I cant give a grade b/c I don't have tape to watch and actually see.
Another somewhat solid game by the O, but this is what Big Ten football is about and sometimes you just have to grind it out.
Also our O has been in the redzone 14 times on the season and we have scored 10TD's and 1FG. And if you remember the 2 times we didnt score were the time Zwick fumbled on his first play and Wells also fumbled. Overall that is very impressive stat.(correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the only time we were in the redzone was the pittman td.)
K's:
Ap's first kick looked like it was going in from where I was sitting. It had the distance, but a 53 yd. in the rain, is a tough kick. To me it shows confidence that Tress actually sent him out there. His kickoffs were once again a thing of beauty.
And Trappasso had another fine day at the office. His punt that was downed on the one, was a great punt. With the way our D has been playing, if he keeps those up, they are going to score a couple more times on the season.
Defense:
Like I said I don't have the drive totals and all that today. What I do know is that we forced 3 TO's and scored 2 TD's, and once again held our opponents to under 10 pts. Still only one team has scored over 10 pts.
32 pts in 4 games is outstanding.
I also loved the goal line stand and then the crowd noise forced them into a false start and a fg.
I have to give the D an A+ on the day. They stepped up to the challenge in a rock em sock em big ten game and came to play.
DE's: A+
What can I say they played awesome today, all over the QB and kept contain on the run.
Also rose got another sack. He is going to be a good one.
DT's: A+
Once again these guys spearheaded the attack. Pittcock seems to be in the backfield ready to take the handoff just about everytime and Penton and Patterson were back there with him as well.
LB's: B
It is hard to get a read without the film. I do know that it seemed they were calling JL's name all day. Other than that there wasnt one that was being called with consistency. He is the clear leader of this defense.
I think the fact that Terry is now listed as a co-starter with Freeman is telling. Freeman has struggled to make plays and Terry has improved as much as anyone from game 1 thru game 4.
S's: B+
Another solid game out of these guys. B. Mitch finally showed back up to make a few big plays, and Russell was his usual self. JamO still missed a tackle or two, but it seems the staff is getting more confident in him by the game.
CB's: A+
Jenks, Washington, Smith once again played great. Man we thought this could be a weakness coming into the season and IMO we are better here than last year.
Jenks is one of the best cover corners I have watched. He is always with his guy stride for stride and does a heckuva job on the jump balls. He made a heckuva a run back on the INT he had. He needs to learn to at least get a couple yards deep in the endzone b4 dropping the ball tho.:tongue2:
Also if you look under hardwork in the dictionary, you should see a picture of A. Smith. Everyone thought that he would be knocked out off the field by some schollie player by now. Well he has not been and he has been there from game 1. He brings great help in run support out of the nickel and does a great job of coverage on the slot. It was also great to see him get that INT return for a td.
Good Things:
- Once again all the guys playing. Have to love the depth of the team.
- Smith showing resilancy and still getting the job done even tho he struggled at times.
- Pittman
- Once again the secondary shutting down the passing game.
- The pressure from the d-line.
- Big Ten Football (You gotta love a smash mouth football game)
- Only 6 points!!!!!!!!!
- 3 TO's!!!!!!!!
Negatives:
- Sluggish performance to start.
- The lack of big plays from more than one lb.
- Teddy being taken out of the game.
- oline blocking early. Really struggled.
- The rain
- No tape
- 36 rows up in C-deck after walking from the corner of 4th and 13th.:(
Overall another solid game. Now time for a big test. Iowa is going to come out fired up, playing like this is their superbowl Throw out what we have seen this year, with their shitty performance against Syracuse or the lackluster game last week against ILL. They are going to bring their A game. I hope that we bring ours right from the start and can get the crowd out of it early. You know the team is going to have the thought of what happened the last time they went up there on their minds. Just one game at a time and this one is a big one.
