Head Coach
I just got done watching the game and I broke down the offensive game. I think with a look at it it might put some of you guys at ease.
We had 11 total drives for the game and our offensive avg. starting point was our own 23 yd. line. Our offense had absolutely no field position all day besides after Holmes's punt return and they capitilized on that.
First off I really liked the balance of the offense.
We ran basically 4 formations.
We ran the power I, Power(2tes, 1 back and 2 wrs), base shotgun(with a couple of wrinkles) and a power Shotgun(same as power but out of the shotgun)
We lined up in the power I 9 times, 4 times for short yardage. We scored once.
We ran 8 times for an avg. of about 2.5 yds/carry. The other time we ran a pa where smith was forced to tuck and run and got about 30 yds. which was negated by a holding call.
We lined up in the power formation 6 times, we tried to throw 3 and ran 3. The one time Smith was forced to run after a pa pass, he ran for 7 yds.
We ran two draws out of it for an avg. of 8.5 yds/carry
One sweep for 10 yds.
The two passes were an underthrow to Ginn and a short screen to ginn that went for 2 yds.
We lined up in shotgun 22 times Tried to throw 15 times and ran 7 times. Smith was forced to run 3 times 18 yds(avg.=6 yds.) We scored twice.
Out of the actual 12 throws Smith was 8/12 for 196 yds. Those are good numbers. He made one bad decision and one where he just threw it away and Ginn came open late, he missed him, but you can't get mad if he is eluding the rush and throws it away. Another one was one he hit Holmes in the hands and he missed it.
Of the called runs one was a reverse to Ginn for -7. DE didnt bite and so Ginn was stuck. We ran an option for 9 yds. and Pittman had 5 runs for 23 yds (avg.=4.5yds.)
Overall pretty balanced and Smith made good reads and Pittman made some nice runs.
We lined up in the Power shotgun 3 times, we threw 1 time and ran it 2 times.
The first play was the fake option 49 yd. td to Holmes.
The other two were a 12 yd run by Pittman and a 2 yd option run by pittman.
Overall out of the 11 drives we had we were forced to punt 5 times, we had 2 fumbles and 4 drives ended with a td.
Of the 5 drives that ended in a punt.
1. We couldnt convert a 3rd and 1 (I thought bad spot, but nonetheless)
2. We were deep in our own territory and we had to run it twice and then on 3rd and 6 Smith was forced out of the pocket and he threw it away.
3. 3rd and 10 Smith was forced to take off after the route was jumped and he got pressure. He got about 9.5 yds. Very close to the first down. This was the drive when he barely underthrew Ginn and badly underthrew Gonzo. I think the fact they were on the sidelines for a long ass time he was cold and didnt have enough on the first throw.
4. This drive was killed by penalties a false start by Hamby and a long run by smith negated by holding. On 3rd and long smith made a bad decision and threw a covered route that would of only got 3 yards. I think he got a little anzy after being pressure a couple times in a row.
5. This was the drive when we ran the reverse to Ginn and it ended up 3rd and 15 and on 3rd down Smith didnt have the time to throw.
Overall we shot ourselves in the foot on 3 of the drives with penalties, loss of yards and when we couldnt get a yard.
The two fumbles we had on O' were bad and we need to hold on to the ball better, but we all know that.
Three of the td's were great plays made by our playmakers when they were given a little space. Just what they needed. The other was a qb sneak by Smith.
Overall I thought our O' played a pretty good game with exceptions for the two fumbles.
Good Things:
-Smith is really improving you can just see it in the way he has been going through his reads and trying to get the ball int he hands of the playmakers. Even the announcers said last year Stanton tried to run to much and didnt go through his reads. Now look at him this year. He will improve.
-Pittman is one hell of a running back. He had a great day yesterday with 101 yds. I would like to see him get a couple more carries a game.
-We found our playmakers and we had the big plays we have been looking for all year.
- I love the fake option pass, the screen and the sweep. All plays I would like to start seeing on a regular basis.
-I like the o-line play all game. They didnt allow a sack all game and only once was a player tackled for a loss and that was the reverse to ginn.
-I liked to see Marcel Frost out there hopefully he can emerge as the playmaker we all believe he can be.
-We averaged 9.4 yds a play.
-For only having around 41 plays(not sure on the number exactally) we put up some good numbers.
-One more thing, it was great to see Smith lead us back from behind, there were people on here that said Smith was not capable of bringing us back well he showed character as did the whole team and we came out on top.
Negatives:
-TOP - last week Tressel was saying why dont you say something about TOP how we had been controlling it. Well I guess it doesnt actually matter if the team will win or lose, but it does keep the defense off the field. I like the big play tds, but Iwould like to see the O control the ball more than 19 minutes in the game.
-Only 4 guys touched the ball. I know they are the top 4 and need to touch it, but we need to spread it out a little bit.
Take what you want from this analysis but I give the offensive performance a B and if not for the two to's I give it a solid A-.
Misc. Notes and questions.
-I thought they werent going to play the Neutron man song anymore. They played it twice.
-MSU let the game slip away and we took advantage of it, same way Texas did to us.
-For those of you still wondering why we didnt offer Sutton from Northwester(musberge said he asked Tress and Tress said we got in on him to late.)
