Head Coach
I just got done watching the game and I broke down the offensive game.
We had 14 total drives for the game and our offensive avg. starting point was our own 36 yd. line. Our offense had decent field position most of the day.
First off I really liked the balance of the offense.
We ran basically 3 formations.
We ran the I, singleback, and base shotgun
We lined up in the I 6 times
We ran 4 times for an avg. of about 2.0 yds/carry. We tried to throw twice, once Smith was sacked, he had no time and the other time we completed the nice little dump off to Stan White for 7 yds. in the redzone.
We lined up in Singleback 34 times, we threw 8 times and ran 26.
Of the 8 times we threw the ball Smith was sacked once, forced to throw it OOB once and there was a PI call on Ind. against Frost. He was also 4/7 for 77 yds.
We ran one screen for 6 yds.
We used PA 3 times and once was the ball that Holmes dove for in the endzone a boot where we got the PI call and the crossing pattern to Hamby for 27 yds.
Of the 26 times we ran the ball There was a penalty on Boone for Clipping(which I never saw) which negated a 6 yd. run and a holding on holmes which negated a 38 yd. run. Overall we ran 24 times for 134 yds and 5.6yds/carry.
We ran 5 draws out of it for an avg. of 6.2 yds/carry
One sweep for 1 yds.
Mo Wells had 3 carries for 34 yds. 11.3yds/carry
We lined up in shotgun 32 times Tried to throw 19 times and ran 13 times.
We scored 3 times out of this formation twice on option keeps and one on the slant to Holmes.
Out of the actual 15 throws Smith was 9/15 for 147 yds. Those are good numbers. He made one bad decision when he threw the pick(PI?), He had the one td to Holmes, and he finally found Gonzo. I liked the screen plays to Ginn and one to Pittman. A couple of his incompletions were 2 throw aways, one dropped and one where Frost slipped coming out of his break. I thought Smith was seeing the field a lot better. The ball he threw to Ginn on the PA pass was a helluva a pass.
Of the 13 runs we ran for 8.4 yds/carry. One play for 2 yds. was called back b/c of a clipping penalty on Datish.
We ran the option 7 times. Smith kept it 5 times for 62yds. = 12.4yds/carry. He pitched it 2 times for 26yds. = 13yds/carry. Those are some very good numbers.
We ran one qb draw for 1 yd.
We handed off to Pittman 2 times for a total of 5 yds.
We handed off to Mo Wells 2 times for a total of 18 yds.
I am very impressed with these numbers out of the Gun.
Overall pretty balanced and Smith made good reads and Pittman made some nice runs.
Overall out of the 14 drives we had we were forced to punt 6 times, we had 1 fumble, 1 pick, 2fg, 1 missed fg, and 3 drives ended with a td.
Of the 6 drives that ended in a punt.
1&2. 2 15 yd. clipping penalties. Hard to overcome them.
3. A sack, the guy came through and Smith didnt see him.
4. sacked on 3rd and 2. Bad job by both tackles.
5. Bad series on 3rd and 9 we tried to run a screen but there was a ton of pressure.
6. Zwick's series where he got sacked causing a long way to go for a fist, and Mo Wells ran twice for 18 yds. needing about 20 for the first.
Also the two fg drives.
1. We got conservative, but we wanted the pts.
2. It was 3rd and 1 and we got no push, We should of picked up this first down.
Also on the missed fg we had to move back 5 yds. b/c of a false start.
Overall we shot ourselves in the foot on 2 of the drives with penalties, 3 times there was a sack and just one really bad series all game, where we only mustered one 1 yd. and had to punt.
The fumble we had should not of happened. The whistle should of been blown for forward progress.
The pick probably could of been PI.
The 3 td's were great plays made by our playmakers when they were given a little space. Holmes took the slant and took it to the house and then Smith ran around the end twice for td's. The one run was spectacular.
Overall I thought our O' played a pretty good game with exceptions for the fumble and the pick. Also there was too much pressure on the qb.
Good Things:
-Smith is continued to improve this week and you can just see it in the way he has been going through his reads and trying to get the ball int he hands of the playmakers. He didnt tuck the ball and run one time in this game. He had a couple check down reads that I liked and he was really feeding the ball with accuracy. The only time I question wheter he was seeing the field was the time when Gonzo was open down the seam, but I think that the play was designed for Holmes and that is where he went and he put the ball in only a place where Holmes could make the play and he almost did.
-Pittman continued to show us something. He runs very hard and he is turning into a very good back. Don't have official numbers, but I think he was around 130 yds. Also he is turning us into a screen team with the great moves he puts on after he catches it.
- I think Wells showed he has what it takes to be able to play, he showed great elusiveness and quickness. Don't know the final numbers, but I think he might of been averaging around double digits in yds/carry. I hope we continue to see him the rest of the way.
-We found our playmakers once again and we had more big plays we have been looking for all year.
- I like the offensive gameplan and the playcalling. I like what I have seen the last two weeks, with the screens, draws, sweeps, pa, and just good execution.
-The o-line play was suspect at times(but decent). Ind was getting too much pressure and we took too many sacks. I think when Barton comes back that Datish might lose his job, b/c even know he played great against MSU he played the total opposite today giving up 2 sacks and letting his guy get pressure more times than any of us would like. I also like the way Boone gets to the LB's and is creating a bigger seam for Pittman. I saw this about 2 or 3 times. Weingold(LMAO), Sims, and Downing all played very well besides for Downing's sack he gave up.
- Loved the way we came out and pounded down their throats after the Ginn fumble, we ran 5 plays and only one didnt go for 18 yds. or more and that was the lose on first down.
- Liked to see some of the young guys in at the end.
- We controlled the clock also which is a big thing.
- We got the ball to more guys today, where we only got it to 4 last week.
- For those in love with offensive stats, they should go up this week.
Negatives:
- I think O-line play could go down here too with the amount of pressure they were putting on us.
- The fumble and the pick, even know they could of been avoided by the refs doing their job, we need to take care of the ball.
- We also need to do a little bit better job of sustaining drives.
Take what you want from this analysis but I give the offensive performance a B and if not for the two to's I give it a solid B+ just b/c we should of done what we did today.
Misc. Notes and questions.
-The Refs fucking sucked. Here are a few examples.
1. Ginn's KO return(what the hell was that, probably worst call I have ever seen)
2. Clipping on Datish and Boone, you are aloud to cut someone inside the tackle box as long as they are not being held up by someone else. Also Datish maybe hit the guys heel of his shoe when he dove for his guy. Horrible calls.
3. The ghostly whistles going on, I know it is close to Halloween, but WTF twice in one game.
4. The non-PI call against the IND defender on the INT. The guy was not allowing the reciever to get to the bal by making contact. I always thought that was PI.
5. The Ginn fumble what the hell happened to the forward progress whistle, Ginn clearly stopped.
6. The replay for IND. where they said that ball hit the ground. What replay did they see that I didnt.
- The D really showed up to play(I hope they can once again shut down the run again this week in Minny) Well I believe we are first in rush defense and scoring and total defense should move up as well.
- Loved to see B-Mitch get that pick and take it to the house.
-Also loved to see the young guys flying around making plays at the end.
- In the end if they don't call a bullshit call on the ko and kudla's roughing the passer, and we get two other calls(PI and fumble), The game very easily could of ended up 62-0.
-I didnt get an answer for this last week so I figured I would post it again. I thought they werent going to play the Neutron man song anymore. They played it twice.
