CB/WR Chris Gamble (All B1G, All-American, National Champion)

Gamble claims portion of spotlight by tying record

Chris Gamble tied Eric Davis for the Panthers' all-time lead in interceptions when he picked off a John Beck pass in the fourth quarter Sunday, giving him 25 in his career.

It was another good moment in a season of redemption for Gamble, who fell out of favor with the previous coaching staff last season. The interception was Gamble's first since Dec. 13, 2009 at New England.

"He's been a guy that's worked hard that's kind of been picked on here lately," linebacker James Anderson said. "He's been playing some great football and I'm happy for him."

Safety Charles Godfrey said the interception was a big moment for Gamble, who didn't speak with reporters after the game.

"You've got to know he's so excited," Godfrey said. "You just have to catch the ones that come to you. It was a great play at a great time of the game. We needed that. It was a big play. I'm happy for Gamb. That helped the team."

Gamble returns to form
By Bryan Strickland

CHARLOTTE ? After Panthers practice finished Thursday, defensive coordinator Sean McDermott gathered his defensive backs in a circle, tossed them two footballs, and had them play a big-boy version of hot potato.

When a player dropped a ball, he was eliminated. When a player threw a ball to a player that already had one, he was eliminated. To survive, players had to have their head on a swivel.

"Hey, Coach, you have a name for that drill?"

"Not really," he said. "It's the 'get interceptions' drill."

Cornerback Chris Gamble didn't win the competition on this day, but Gamble is the latest to get the interceptions that McDermott is seeking ? a historic interception at that.

Last Sunday, Gamble sealed the Panthers' victory over the Washington Redskins with his 25th career interception, tying Eric Davis' franchise record.

"It felt good," Gamble said. "We were in man-to-man coverage. I stayed on top, where I could see the quarterback and the receiver. Then when I saw the ball in the air, I just attacked to the ball and tried to return it.

"I'm my biggest critic, and I felt like I should have gotten this last year. Now that I have it, I'm going to try to keep it going, but it felt good getting that first one."

Gamble revived after tough 2010
By David Scott - [email protected]

Before he intercepted Washington Redskins quarterback John Beck last Sunday to tie the Carolina Panthers' franchise record, cornerback Chris Gamble had gone 19 games without intercepting a pass.

It was the longest drought of his six-year career. And since that last interception - which came late in 2009 season against New England - had put him on the doorstep of Panthers history, Gamble had dealt with plenty of frustration.

"It's been a long time," said Gamble on Thursday, speaking for the first time since tying Eric Davis' team record of 25 against the Redskins. "But I'd told myself not to let it bother me, so I kind of let it go. But that was a big smile I had on my face when I got it."

The 2010 season was forgettable for Gamble. He missed five games with hamstring and ankle injuries. Apparently falling out of favor with then-coach John Fox, he was benched against Cleveland after missing a practice for what he called personal reasons.

"We were 2-14; it was just a bad year," Gamble said. "So I'm just trying to stay positive. I can't worry about the negative stuff."

Gamble secures record, not ball
By Bryan Strickland

111118_gamble_inside.jpg

CHARLOTTE - Chris Gamble has kept the football from each of his 26 career interceptions - save one.

Gamble didn't secure the last one, the record-setting one.

"I was upset about the game. I was thinking about that and kind of forgot about it, just trying to focus on the game," said Gamble, who set the Panthers' career interception record in last Sunday's 30-3 loss to Tennessee. "I don't have the ball, but I have the record."

Gamble's pick of Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck in the third quarter put him ahead of Eric Davis in team annals. Gamble, who didn't have any interceptions in 2010 but now has two this season to tie and then break Davis' record, feels he should have claimed the mark long ago.

Last Sunday, however, there was something that Gamble wanted more than the individual record.

"I wish it was the other way around, that we could have come up with the win instead of me getting an interception, but it is an honor to have that record, finally," Gamble said. "We were in man-to-man, and I took a look back at the quarterback and saw he was getting ready to throw the ball. I just broke on the ball and picked it off."

Panthers Insider: Gamble is paying off
November 29, 2011
NOTES

The Panthers have been thrilled with the play of cornerback Chris Gamble, who is enjoying a bounce-back season under coach Ron Rivera.

Gamble was benched late last season by coach John Fox after he failed to register an interception and struggled in coverage.

"Chris has had just an outstanding season, and I don't think he's getting the credit he deserves because he does it quietly and doesn't make a lot out of it," Rivera said. "I thought the plays he has made, coming up and making some big tackles, have been outstanding for us. We've asked him to do some things differently in other games where you ask him to cover the number one receiver, switch sides, and he's done that. I really can't talk enough about what he's done and what he's meant for us defensively as far as being a steady, steady influence and a steady performer."

Gamble suddenly a sure thing again for Panthers after rocky 2010
By RON GREEN JR. - McClatchy Newspapers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- When Ron Rivera sat down with cornerback Chris Gamble before the season, he didn't want to talk about the past.

He wanted to talk about the future and Gamble's place in it.

This wasn't about what did or didn't happen between him and former coach John Fox at the end of a 2-14 season in which Gamble missed the last five games because of injuries and mutual frustration. It couldn't be about that any more.

"I sat him down and told him, 'You're our No. 1 corner. We want to put you to the challenge and we really believe you can do some things. But I think also we've got to help you with the pass rush.' And I think that's helped him," Rivera said.

"There've been some philosophical changes that have helped him. We've utilized his talents and abilities. But the young man's really worked hard. You watch the way he practices, the way he studies an opponent, he's been revitalized."

Gamble has answered Rivera's call.

Had the Panthers won more games early in the season, Rivera thinks the team could have several players in the Pro Bowl, including cornerback Chris Gamble. "Look at what (Gamble has) done and the way he's done it. Put the tape on and watch a guy making tackles. Put the tape on and he's lining up against the No. 1's and really hasn't given up a big day for a No. 1 receiver," Rivera said. "I'm very pleased with what he's done. He had a rough start at camp, getting injured, but he never stopped paying attention and doing the things you ask. That was huge. It's why he had the season he's had."

Chris Gamble Leads Up and Coming Carolina Panthers Secondary.
Published: 18th Jun
by Dave Daniels

Last season, Chris Gamble became the Carolina Panthers? all-time interception leader in 2011 with an impressive bounce-back season; he thinks the defense will recover as a unit in 2012 after ranking in the bottom 10th of the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns allowed.

?We?re anxious to get out there and prove a lot of people wrong,? Gamble said. ?We have a young group of guys, but we?re going to go out there and make plays and cause turnovers.?

Gamble has the veteran experience to know what he is talking about, and the defense?s production will likely determine whether the Panthers are a playoff dark horse or not.

?I love this defense, and now that I?ve got a year under my belt, I feel more comfortable and am ready to make more plays,? Gamble said. ?We?ve got some good cornerbacks, and all of them are looking good.?

Gamble knows he will have to continue to compete, but this year?s cornerback crew is much deeper than last year.

?When you look at the group of young guys, one of them has got to step up and become that No. 2 guy,? Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said. ?Whether it?s Captain staying at the No. 2 and being the nickel as well, or if it?s another guy stepping up and becoming the No. 2, it?s a good competition. That?s probably the most important thing, that we have competition at as many positions as possible."

Gamble the real hero of 2002 title team
Sep 23, 2012Written by
Larry Phillips
CentralOhio.com

COLUMBUS -- Word leaked out earlier this year Ohio State's 2002 national championship team wants to have a reunion.

Specifically, those former Buckeyes would like to gather at the Michigan game. A brief controversy ensued when some speculated if deposed coach Jim Tressel or scandalous tailback Maurice Clarett would be invited after being tossed out of college football for their respective NCAA scandals. OSU athletic director Gene Smith cleared the air by saying neither were banned from campus and could attend the festivities.

One other person might not be there, either, but for a far different reason. Chris Gamble still is playing in the NFL.

Gamble was just a sophomore receiver that season, and there was zero preseason hype about him. But before the season ended he was the team's co-MVP with quarterback Craig Krenzel, and his contributions would be staggering.

Offensively, Gamble caught 31 passes for 499 yards and ran for 49 yards on three carries with a 43-yard touchdown on a reverse against Indiana.

When injuries and ineffective play necessitated it, the Florida native pulled double duty in the secondary. Gamble began at cornerback in the fourth game at Cincinnati, and made an immediate impact. His fourth-quarter interception in the end zone thwarted a Bearcats drive and helped preserve a 23-19 victory.

Banged-up Beason, Gamble could miss significant time for Panthers
Published: October 18, 2012
By Jonathan Jones ? [email protected]

The Carolina Panthers may be without Jon Beason and Chris Gamble not just for the Dallas game on Sunday, but maybe even longer.

Three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Beason and top cornerback Gamble did not participate in Thursday?s practice, and coach Ron Rivera said he?s concerned about the duo?s status for Sunday.

Beason has dealt with shoulder and knee injuries, though the knee is the main concern and kept him out of practice for a second consecutive day. Gamble participated fully in practice Tuesday, but he reinjured his already banged-up shoulder and sat out Thursday.

When asked if there?s a possibility of either or both going on injured reserve, Rivera sighed deeply.

?That?s tough to say, just because we?ll see (Friday),? Rivera said. ?Chris had come back feeling pretty good after having two weeks off, basically, and ran around really well (Thursday). Then he came in this morning and was complaining about the stiffness and soreness that he had from a shot he took.?

Carolina Panthers' Chris Gamble to have MRI on shoulder
Associated Press
Published: Oct. 20, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera said starting cornerback Chris Gamble will have an MRI on his right shoulder to determine if he has a torn labrum, the same injury that sent offensive lineman Mike Pollak to injured reserve earlier this season.
Brandt: In Cam's defense
Cam Newton is taking plenty of heat these days, but Gil Brandt says the quarterback is hampered by Carolina's offense. More ...

Gamble has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys and Rivera is "concerned" he may end up on injured reserve.

"Once he gets the exam and goes through all that we'll determine" if he goes on IR, Rivera said. "Probably the soonest we'll know is Monday."

As if the Panthers (1-4) need any more problems, Rivera also said three-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Jon Beason is "very doubtful" for the Cowboys game because of a lingering knee issue and that rookie Luke Kuechly will make his second start in the middle.

Rivera said Gamble, who has started 117 games in nine seasons, first injured the shoulder against Atlanta on Sept. 30. He sat out Carolina's game against Seattle the following week. He reinjured it in practice this week.

Rivera called Gamble one of the most underrated cornerbacks in the league.

Panthers put CB Chris Gamble on injured reserve, ending his season
By Ron Green Jr.
[email protected]
Posted: Monday, Oct. 22, 2012

The dismissal of general manager Marty Hurney wasn?t the only thing that shook the Carolina Panthers? world on Monday.

Starting cornerback Chris Gamble was placed on the injured reserve list, ending his season.

Gamble, in his ninth season, has been bothered by a shoulder problem that will require surgery. He initially hurt his shoulder in a loss at Atlanta and sat out the Seattle game Oct. 7. He returned to practice after the bye week but aggravated the injury and missed the Dallas game on Sunday.

?We?re going to have to go forward without him. He?s going to have to get that shoulder taken care of,? Rivera said.
