Gamble: Embracing defensive simplicityAndrew Mason

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- For a cornerback, the security of a long-term contract comes with the scrutiny of being the focal point of a team's passing defense. But if Chris Gamble is feeling any additional pressure heading into his first full season after signing a contract extension, he isn't letting it show.

"I just feel like I've got to keep doing what I do," he said. "Just play ball, stay consistent, make sure I tackle, play my man and just have fun at the same time."

Fun has come in the form of a new defense that Gamble believes will release him to make more big plays than he has in the first five years of his career.

"Actually, I love it. It's more zone, a little man here and there," he said. "I feel like I can make a lot more plays, just watching the quarterback and reacting."

That makes for an easier, quicker game for the former first-round pick.

"(We're) just playing faster. Everything's simple. Last year there was a lot thrown at us, but this year it's simple; we're just playing faster.

"When it's simple, you just go out and play faster and have fun at the same time. Last year it was just a lot of thinking and not a lot of reaction."

The loudest I've ever heard Ohio Stadium bar none! Can't even think of another moment that would be a close second, it was that loud.

Absolutely agree. Not even Will Allen's interception to end the UM game was close to that.

Incredible play and fantastic game. :banger:

GAME NOTES: Panthers CB Gamble struggles vs. Ravens E-mail
Written by Steve Reed

CHARLOTTE ? The Carolina Panthers gave Chris Gamble a $54.5 million contract extension last season to be their shutdown cornerback.

Give that financial investment the Panthers can?t be real happy with the effort they got from Gamble on Saturday night.

The six-year NFL veteran had a rough first half against the Baltimore Ravens, giving up a 42-yard completion to Kelley Washington, completions of 26 and 10 yards to 35-year-old Derrick Mason and was flagged for illegal hands to the face, all resulting in Ravens first downs. If he's struggling against guys like Washington and Mason, you have to wonder how he'll fare Larry Fitzgerald and Randy Moss this season.

CHARLOTTE -- On the one hand, Chris Gamble had a night worth forgetting Saturday. On the other, it's worth remembering -- if only as a learning experience.

"It was bad. I just know I'm way better than that, giving up plays like that," the sixth-year cornerback said Monday after a two-hour practice at Bank of America Stadium. "I'll look at that film, correct my mistakes and just be ready for next week."

Gamble's rough night was encapsulated on the last play of the first quarter, when Baltimore wide receiver Kelley Washington sprinted past him up the right sideline, eventually coming down with a 42-yard reception that set up the Ravens' first touchdown.

For that, and other passes yielded Saturday, Gamble cited "bad technique," repeating the phrase for emphasis as he answered reporters' queries Monday.

"For me, it was bad technique. I can play way better than that. I just came out and had a bad game. I missed a couple of tackles and gave up a deep ball," he said. "Like I said, bad technique."

A reason for Gamble's emphasis on techinque is the new defensive scheme, which he said emphasizes the more technical aspects of his position.

"(There's) a lot of zone. You've got to watch the quarterback on the line and break on the ball," Gamble said, adding that some of his issues came from being unable to disrupt the receiver when he was lined up near the line of scrimmage.

"In Cover Two, (it was) not getting a good jam to force him inside and make him re-route his feet," Gamble said.

He would welcome the opportunity to atone in Thursday's preseason finale, if it comes his way.

"Myself, I would. I want to bounce back, go out there, make a couple of plays and have fun," he said. "But you've got to be smart, because it's the last preseason game and you've got the Eagles coming in (for the regular-season opener), so you've got to be ready for those guys."

Chris Gamble didn't duck the obvious Monday, admitting his play in Saturday night's exhibition against Baltimore was unsatisfactory.

?It was bad technique,? he said. ?I can play way better than that.?

Gamble didn't look like the shutdown corner he is being paid to be.

He gave up a 42-yard pass to Baltimore receiver Kelley Washington, a journeyman who has six starts in six NFL seasons. Gamble also surrendered pass plays of 26 and 10 yards to Derrick Mason, a 35-year-old veteran who decided to come out of retirement in early August.

Gamble's struggles played a big role in the Panthers giving up 247 yards passing in 21/2 quarters to Ravens second-year quarterback Joe Flacco.

?I came out and played a bad game, missed a couple of tackles and gave up a deep ball,? said Gamble. ?I watched the (film) and corrected the mistakes and I'm ready for the next game."

To be fair, after Allen's pick to end the scUM game, half the stadium had a date with the goalposts and pepperspray. We weren't thinking about yelling.

Dantonio compared it to when he was the defensive coordinator at Ohio State and saw a defensive back in Chris Gamble, who came to the Buckeyes program strictly as a wide receiver.

"The wide receivers and defensive backs were messing around and I was all the way down the field, and looked down there and saw (Gamble) pressing a wide receiver," Dantonio recalled. "And I said, `That guy can play.' And so, (the offense) gave him to us for five minutes the next practice.

"But I was determined that we were going to get him in the game and let him play. The next week we got him for 10 minutes. And the next week we got him for 15, and the next week for 20."

Eventually, Gamble became one of the very few true two-way players in recent times, and continues to play his adopted position, cornerback, for the Carolina Panthers.

GAMBLE VS. FITZGERALD?: Chris Gamble wants another shot at Larry Fitzgerald.

Nearly 10 months after Fitzgerald scorched Carolina's zone coverage with eight catches for 166 yards and a touchdown in Arizona's 33-13 playoff win, Gamble is hoping the Panthers play more man-to-man coverage on Sunday.

"I think last year when we played them we played more zone, so it hurt us then," the cornerback said. "I think we should play more man, to get closer and compete with those guys."

If that's the case, Gamble would likely defend Fitzgerald, who ranks fifth in the NFL with 41 catches for 443 yards and five touchdowns.

"Like I said last year, I want to get on Larry Fitzgerald," Gamble said. "That's their go-to guy, and I just want to compete with that guy. I know he's one of the great receivers in the league, so I feel like I want to get my name out there and play my best against him."

Despite losing 20-10, Chris definitely felt it was necessary to tell the Boston Globe that Randy Moss is a quitter, and that he respects Wes Welker's game more than he respects Moss'.

Let's hope he doesn't rouse Moss' ire the next time they meet. I love Chris, but Randy is a HoF wide receiver who is capable of torching anybody on any given Sunday. No reason to make a guy like that upset.
