CB Shaun Wade (1st Team All American, Los Angeles Chargers)

Six for Saturday: Buckeyes Primed For Stardom In 2019

Last year, the Buckeyes had a star emerge at quarterback as Dwayne Haskins set all kinds of Ohio State passing records. The year before, it was freshman running back JK Dobbins.

In 2016, you saw Malik Hooker, Curtis Samuel, Marshon Lattimore, Nick Bosa and I can’t even remember who else become stars.

It happens every year. New stars take over and become household names in the college football world.

This year will be no different. There is no shortage of possible new stars for Ohio State in 2019, but for our purposes we’ll keep it to just six or so names.

Shaun Wade – Defensive Back, rSoph.
Greg Schiano had Shaun Wade spinning a lot of plates last year as a redshirt freshman. He was a cornerback, but practiced at safety, and was also the team’s top nickel back. Wherever they needed him in the secondary, he went. It wasn’t perfect — there was the 93-yard touchdown given up to Penn State’s KJ Hamler — but much of it was still very, very good. If Wade is Ohio State’s starting strong safety this season, he could be in for a big year. Even if he is “just” the nickel back, he will still make plenty of plays. If he is on the field as much as I think he should be, then expect an All-B1G season in 2019.

Ranking Ohio State’s Playmakers on Defense: No. 5 — Shaun Wade

Ohio-State-football-cornerback-Shaun-Wade.jpg

The No. 5 player on this list missed his true freshman season and spent last year floating between nickel, corner, and safety, but may finally have a permanent temporary home at safety this season.

No. 5 — Shaun Wade, Redshirt Sophomore Defensive Back
Shaun Wade was a 5-star signee for the Buckeyes in the 2017 class. He was ranked the No. 17 player overall and the No. 2 cornerback in the nation.

He signed early and took part in spring ball. He had some nice plays late in the spring game and led the Scarlet squad with six tackles, all solo.

Wade wasn’t able to play during the season due to an abdominal tear, so he redshirted. Last year was his first action for the Buckeyes, coming mostly in a nickel back role. He also spent much of the season practicing at safety while also getting time at cornerback.

Wade started twice last season, once as the nickel against Purdue and then at safety the following week against Nebraska.

He finished with 31 tackles and led the Buckeyes with three interceptions and 10 passes defended. He also added a blocked kick to his havoc.

Ohio State is loaded with talent once again this season, but much of it is unproven.

The Buckeyes signed their two highest-rated recruiting classes of the modern era in 2017 and 2018, and with those players entering their second and third seasons respectively, it’s their time to make an impact – in many cases, for the first time.

Here are 10 players who will be stepping into larger roles with the team and seem poised for breakout seasons in 2019.

SHAUN WADE – DEFENSIVE BACK – REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE
One way or another, Shaun Wade will see plenty of action for the Buckeyes this season.

Wade was the second-highest-rated cornerback in the 2017 class, behind only his teammate Jeff Okudah, but redshirted his first season due primarily to an injury.

Wade made an impact in 2018 – his first playing season – as perhaps the team’s most versatile defensive back, playing three different positions throughout the season. He emerged as the team’s top slot cornerback in the nickel package, was a backup for the outside corners, and rotated in at safety, even starting opposite of Jordan Fuller against Nebraska.

Wherever he lines up this season, he’s proven he can be an impact player, leading the team with three interceptions and delivering a couple bone-crunching hits against Michigan last season.

Hooker, Lattimore, Conley, Ward

Yeah, going to be hard to ever top that group. We had some great groups in the 90s, but that group was flat out elite. That being said, we should have a great DB group if Okudah and Wade take the next step and become elite, which they were knocking on the door of by the end of last year. Also, Proctor is getting rave reviews, but we're going to have to see it on the field.

FOOTBALL: POSITIONLESS SHAUN WADE PROVIDES DEPTH ACROSS SECONDARY

wade-2cov3ls-530x407.jpg

Athletes that prove capable at two positions provide great depth to teams by being able to relieve multiple teammates and keeping an extra starting-caliber player on the field.

Shaun Wade is capable at three.

“I think you’ll see Shaun inside. I think you’ll see Shaun outside,” co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley said. “Depends, who’s their slot? Who’s more suited to cover the slot? Who’s more suited to cover the big receiver on the outside?”

Not even the redshirt sophomore defensive back himself can define his position.

“I can’t tell you,” Wade said. “Wherever they need me at, for real.”

Cornerback and nickelback are Wade’s primary two roles, in which he intercepted three passes and broke up seven more in 2018, leading the team in both categories despite not starting the first two games.

Junior Jeffrey Okudah and redshirt senior Damon Arnette are the two likely options at cornerback as returning starters, but Ohio State has rotated three players at the position in past years.

Nickel appears to be Wade’s to lose, since he filled the role in the 2018 season. It’s a position that isn’t on the field consistently, however, and won’t be when the Buckeyes are in their base 4-3 defense. He doesn’t have a preference between the two, even with the greater number of routes a nickel must defend.

“Corner and nickel is the same thing, just at nickel they’ve got a two-way go,” Wade said. “I feel like corner is easier.”
