CB Richard McNutt (YSU Defensive Backs Coach)

Yes, his only year coaching in Columbus was 2003. With a young coach as McNutt, sometimes you need to bounce around to move up and/or get a better salary. Though it may be a lateral move in terms of responsibilities, NIU is a better program right now than Kent State...the next step should be to a BCS conference team.

It seems only fitting that the NIU football team?s newfangled cornerbacks group has a lively position coach in Richard McNutt.

The Ohio State alumnus inherits a renovated Huskie secondary, after the departures of starting corners Chris Smith, Kiaree Daniels and Patrick George.

?We got a great group of guys,? McNutt said. ?Even though they?re young, they?re talented and capable of doing a lot of different things.?

The guys McNutt is referring to include Jimmie Ward, Rashaan Melvin and Sean Evans, among others.

?Somebody?s got to step up,? Ward said. ?But I think we can fill their shoes and spots.?

For Ward, it took hardly any time for him to click with McNutt from their first meeting.

?I really connected with him the first day,? Ward said. ?As a coach, I like him because he does more coaching than he yells.?

Coaches Corner with Richard McNutt
Posted: Monday, October 10, 2011
Eli Gehn

Richard McNutt started his coaching career as a student coach in 2003 at Ohio State, where he became a national champion as a cornerback the year earlier.

Since then, McNutt has served mainly as a defensive backs coach for multiple teams, including the Cleveland Browns, and MAC schools, such as Toledo and Kent State, before being hired this year at NIU.

McNutt took some time to talk with the Northern Star about how he has progressed through his coaching career, what he has learned and if he enjoys coaching more at the college level rather than the professional level.

Northern Star: Do you still have good memories of your national championship season as a player with Ohio State?

Richard McNutt: Those were great times. I was on teams with a lot of fierce competitors. Those are my best friends to this day and winning is always fun, so it was a great time winning all those games.

NS: What did you learn while coaching and playing under former Buckeye head coach Jim Tressel?

RM: You win with the people you have and to treat people fairly. He taught us how to win, he taught us values as people. He didn't just teach us how to be football players, but he taught us life lessons. I take that from him as I start coaching now. Not just to coach guys on the football field, but to coach them in life as well.

NS: How did being a player help you with your coaching?

RM: It helped me because I started coaching while I was at Ohio State and the experience there - being able to play at that level - helped me understand the game. Being able to coach my peers helped me be able to relate to my players.

NS: What have you learned most about being a coach as the years have gone by?

RM: I learned that all the kids are different and you have to be able to adapt as a coach and coach each particular kid and find what works for that kid and help him improve every day.

NS: You were on the coaching staff for the Cleveland Browns in 2008. Would you say it's more of a joy coaching college players compared to professional players?

RM: I had a great time coaching in the NFL. I have a great time coaching college players. Coaching football is coaching football. If it's what you love to do, you'll have a great time coaching, whoever you're going to coach.

Richard McNutt joins Wolfpack staff

Raleigh, N.C. ? North Carolina State University head football coach Dave Doeren announced on Thursday that Richard McNutt, who spent the last two seasons on Doeren's staff at Northern Illinois, has been named cornerbacks coach.

"Richard is one of the most aggressive and talented recruiters I've been with," Doeren said in a statement. "He is also a great technician at the corner position."

McNutt played corner at Ohio State University in the early 2000s and was a part of the 2002 national championship team that finished 14-0.

"Richard has been at the highest level of collegiate football, playing on a national championship team at Ohio State and also working in the NFL, so he brings a lot of expertise to our players," Doeren said.

In 2011, McNutt's secondary at Northern Illinois ranked 89th nationally in passing defense. This season, that group improved to 41st, allowing 217.7 yards per game. The Huskies pulled down 15 interceptions in 2012, good for 23rd nationally.

Prior to joining the NIU staff, McNutt coached defensive backs at Kent State, where the Golden Flashes boasted the No. 1 total defense in the Mid-American Conference in 2010.

?I would like to thank Coach Doeren and Debbie Yow for the opportunity to join the Wolfpack Family,? said McNutt in a statement. ?I am very excited to continue building on the foundation that has been set and I look forward to mentoring and developing our secondary here at NC State.?
