CB Lejond Cavazos (transfer to North Carolina, transfer to Mich. St.)

Opportunity to Play Cornerback, Grow As a Person Brought Lejond Cavazos to Ohio State

Lejond Cavazos didn’t play cornerback until his final year of high school, but a number of the nation’s top schools saw enough well before then to believe he could make the transition from safety.

Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Texas, Michigan, and dozens of others had thrown their hats into the ring because the projection was easy to make.

Part of their belief was the 4.40 40-yard dash Cavazos recorded at a combine, along with a 4.16 shuttle and a 44″ vertical leap. Being 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds didn’t hurt either. His own desire to play corner was what sealed it, of course.

As the saying goes, you can lead a safety to water, but you can’t make him play press man.

Cavazos wanted the challenge, and so he got it.

“It’s just big here. Knowing that you have a first-rounder every year at the position I play, you have to step up, regardless of if you’re ready or not,” he said. “You have to step up and hold the legacy there. There’s going to be first-rounders this year, next year, the year after me and so on. This is a cornerback school. There’s a lot of position schools but when you think of Ohio State, you think of Cornerback U. So that was a big thing for me.”

Cavazos wants to play professional football and nobody will prepare him to do that like Ohio State will. But such things are not guaranteed, which is why his decision came down to more than just on-field desires.

“It was more of me just wanting to better myself as a person and a football player definitely, because knowing what we have here, like Real Life Wednesdays, say football wasn’t to work out for me, I know I’ll have a job after that,” he said. “So it was bigger than football for me.”

Will Crall: Lejond Cavazos will win starting job for Ohio State
Back in April, I predicted that Lejond Cavazos would have a big spring game and emerge as a starter for the Buckeyes this season. Nothing has really changed, so I’m going to double down on that prediction. The starting position opposite Shaun Wade is wide open. Cavazos played against nationally-ranked competition almost every week in high school at at IMG Academy and is coached by the best in the business, Kerry Coombs. It is for these reasons — plus, he looked very impressive the first couple of practices of the spring — that I think he will emerge at some point this year.

DB Lejond Cavazos
Cavazos played at one of the best high school football factories in the country, IMG Academy, meaning he played against top opposition and he faced tough competition every day in practice. The leap from high school to Ohio State may be a big one, but he could make it happen and carve out a role on special teams in Year One. He’s not the top-rated player in his class, and he’s not the biggest. But he’s one of the best-prepared, and that could help vault him to a spot during his freshman campaign.

3. DB Lejond Cavazos

I’ve talked about Lejond Cavazos and how well he has done since shortly after he arrived in Columbus in January. He is eventually going to be another in a long line of great cornerbacks who have played for the Buckeyes over the past ten or so years. With Shaun Wade opting back in that lessons the need for the Buckeyes to rely on Cavazos right away. But I fully look for him to be in the 2-deep and get on the field and get meaningful reps this season.

Lejond Cavazos cleared for first action with Buckeyes

Lejond Cavazos is finally cleared to potentially make his debut at Ohio State.

That’s Step One, of course. Now the freshman cornerback will have to prove that he’s ready to add to the depth of the Buckeyes secondary after missing the first three games of his career with the program.

“Yeah, [Cavazos] can help,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said on Thursday. “How many plays? That’s up to him. He did get banged up there, so he was out for some of those practices and that was really hard. He was making a good push, but then he had that injury.

“Now he’s getting back into it again, he’s starting to practice. How much can he help? I hope he gets an opportunity to get out there, get his feet wet, learn from his mistakes and keep getting better.”

yeah, writing is on the wall. I think he at least gets an opportunity this weekend whether it be in mop-up or some meaningful snaps while the game is still competitive. Regardless, defense needs to figure out a way to close out a game this weekend.

Even just a consistent approach would be nice. So no more 2 quarters of domination and then 2 quarters of suck.

Just 4 solid quarters.

Lejond Cavazos sheds black stripe, enters mix in secondary
Another member of the 2020 Ohio State recruiting class has lost his black stripe, and he could immediately enter the mix in the Buckeyes struggling secondary.

Lejond Cavazos was a four-star recruit at this time last year, ready to sign with the Buckeyes and compete for playing time. Now a year later, he’s a freshman who just got healthy after an injury during camp, and with the Buckeyes searching for answers, Cavazos could play a role in the secondary down the stretch for the Buckeyes.

The black stripe doesn’t signal that Cavazos will play; it simply means he has done enough on the practice field to be an official member of the football program. But if the secondary continues to give up big plays, some freshmen and other younger players may become an option for Kerry Coombs and the coaching staff. And Cavazos seems to be right in the mix.
