Met Brandon Harrison like a month ago, he is really a nice kid. Looks really thick and is defintely taller than 5-8. I am 5'-9" 2/8ths (doctor measured) and he is taller than me.

I agree with everybody who says height is overrated at CB. Its more about coverage skills, hips, closing speed, ability to read the QB, anticipation, and strength.

Some of the best CBs in the NFL are 5-9 to 5-10.

I would tend to disagree with that. There are good corners in the NFL who are that short, but most of the elite guys are around 6' tall.

And as for OSU... the coaches have shown over the last few years that they want big CBs. The only scholarship DBs on the roster under 6 foot tall are Mike Roberts (5'11) and Shaun Lane (5'10). This includes all of the incoming freshman as well. Of all the great CBs we've had in the last 10 or so years, Winfield is the only one that quickly comes to mind that was this short.... Plummer at 6', Clements is 6', Gamble is 6'1, Springs is 6'

With that said, if Chappel comes in to camp and shows he can get it done, I have no problem with that at all.

Ty Law is 5-11
Patrick Surtain is 5-10
Dre Bly is 5-9
3 of the 1st round CBs drafted in the 2004 NFL draft were 5-9 to 5-10
Antonie Winnfeild is 5-8

just saying, height don't matter as much as people try to make it out to be.

And of those short guys, only Winfield played at OSU. OSU likes having big corners. The numbers speak pretty clearly for themselves.
I think its more of a coiencedence than OSU favoring 6ft and up cornerbacks..

Bottom line- if the coaches think the kid is worthy of an offer he'll get an offer.

I've seen a few people in this thread try and imply Harrison wasn't good enough for tOSU because he was only 5-8. Guess what, he is taller than 5-8 first off and secondly he most likely would've gotten an offer if he went to tOSU's camp!

This kid was lights out at his NIKE camp when he was a junior. Measured in his socks at 5-9, 190 pounds- he also locked up every WR in attendance and won the camp MVP honors, clocked a 4.25-40, and had a 37.5 inch vertical jump.

True...but the opinion of the staff does.

Harrison's height was a cop out reason that was bred on message boards...if he went to camp, he would have received an offer. He chose not to go, tOSU chose not to offer.

Brandon must have had on some thick soles, his official combine measurement does not make him taller than you...

Height: 5-foot-8.5
Weight: 190 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.25 seconds
Shuttle speed: 4.28
Bench press: 18 reps
Vertical leap: 37.3 inches

EDIT: Split so Jovani can have his own thread

Players nowadays are faster bigger and more atheletic then even 5 years ago. NFL prefers 6'4" TO type of WRs. College WRs are getting bigger too. ie. Edwards (scUM) and Williams (scUM west).

So the new crop of DBs gotta be atleast 6'0".

That was the case, and it will be again if the NFL reneges on continuing to enforce its contact rules. As of now, the more athletic burner type of recievers could be the wave of the future once more. That would mean getting faster corners to cover these guys, rather than bigger corners to beat up on them. That's why I think that, even though Antrelle Rolle will go first in the draft this year. Adam Jones will be a better corner in the NFL.

I am not saying that speed doesn't matter. Anyone who plays a DB position has to have speed atleast 4.5 40. But a true DB has to be atleast 6'0" + .
Shorter DBs will get beat everytime on a jump ball.

I guess the four cornerbacks under 6' who made the Pro Bowl last season aren't true corners. :roll1:
Just to hold up my end...i got some for you too.

Deion Sanders 6'1"
Charles Woodson 6'1"
Chris Gamble 6'1"
Chris McAlister 6'1"
Shawn Springs 6'0"
Champ Bailey 6'0"
Nate Clemens 6'0"
Samari Rolle 6'0"
Bobby Taylor 6'3"

I'd take some of these guys any day over the short DBs. However, I do understand when I used the world "true" I was stretching it a bit.

Besides Deion, who would you take from that list over a 5'9 Darrell Green(in his prime of course)?

Personally, I see the philosophy and mostly agree with the taller DB preference....

However, there are guys that transcend measurables...whether or not Brandon Harrison is one of those remains to be seen.

Wrong. The coaches have stated before that they like bigger corners. I think the '98 MSU game still leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

Nothing burns my arse like watching some 6'5" receiver jump over the heads of our corners. It hasn't happened so much in the recent past, but it is annoying. Without his height, Braylon Edwards wouldn't have had half the stats he did last year...how many jump ball floaters did he catch? THAT is why I'm not crazy about the Harrison types. And on red zone fades...a 5'8" corner can be very scary to have.

Also, the Buckeye fans who speak here on this issue are generally right in that our corners are generally larger & that is not a coincidence. How many AA quality corners have we had and how many were under 6? Since Springs, we've had 5 & only Winfield was under 6'. Springs, Clements, Gamble, Plummer & Winnie. Add Youboty as a potential future AA corner and there's 5 out of 6.
