CB Eli Apple (All B1G, National Champion, Los Angeles Chargers)

Giants S Collins: Bring Eli Apple back

"My relationship can be repaired with him," Collins told the NY Post on Monday night while taking in the national championship game won by his alma mater, Alabama. "Our relationship can be mended. I don't know what his mindset is right now. He's kind of all over the place right now. You can see that with his Twitter rant. We got to have an understanding why he's playing football, because you got to be playing football to be one of the best players, not to be on the team and blowing your opportunity."

Apple was disciplined by the Giants for the final game of the season for a heated exchange with coaches and played in only 11 games in 2017.

Collins labeled Apple "a cancer" in response to Apple saying Collins' claim that he was assisting Apple through his struggles was false.

"I think the organization should keep him," Collins said. "He's a first-rounder. He does a good job when his head is on straight on the field. ... I want him to be here. I want him to be under my wing, and I can continue pushing him, continuing teaching him how this game is and how this business goes, and help him grow up as much as I can."

Eli Apple embarrassed by 2017 antics, ready to move forward

New York Giants cornerback Eli Apple is ready to move on from his rough 2017 NFL season.

Apple made headlines for all the wrong reason last season and was even suspended one game for "a pattern of behaviour that is conduct detrimental to the team."

The 22-year-old reportedly was defiant towards team-mates and coaches and the locker room got so bad with him that Landon Collins called him a "cancer."

Now all that appears to be water under the bridge, with Apple saying he is remorseful for his actions.

"Was I embarrassed? Of course," Apple said of the way his season ended. "Nobody wants to go out the way I went out. So, of course."

Coach Pat Shumer said Apple deserves a clean slate and that he has been completely professional since joining the team at organised team activities (OTAs) on Monday.

Giants CB Eli Apple trying to make the most of second chance

201805211319479772723

The 22-year-old cornerback who was the 10th pick in the 2016 draft on Monday promised to be a better player, a better person, and a better teammate as the Giants start a rebuilding process under new coach Pat Shurmur after a 3-13 season.

It was ugly and highlighted a year in which Apple dealt with a crisis at home: His mother had brain surgery.

''Was I embarrassed? Of course,'' Apple said after the Giants held a two-hour practice at the first of their 10 organized team activities. ''Nobody wants to go out the way I went out. I mean, it was all over the place, so of course.

Many wondered whether the Giants would want Apple back after his second season, one that many had forecast would provide a great leap forward for him.

What changed, though, was the Giants shaking up things after last season. Dave Gettleman was hired to replace Jerry Reese as general manager and Shurmur replaced interim coach Steve Spagnuolo, who had taken over when Ben McAdoo was fired in early December.

One of the first things Gettleman did was tell him everyone was starting with a clean slate.

''I'm just going to fine tune everything, come in with a different attitude and just be positive out there on the field, and just do everything that I can to make myself better as a player, and everybody else better as a team,'' Apple said.

Who stood out at Giants OTAs? (6/04)

The New York Giants held their seventh of 10 OTA practices on Monday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. This is their third and final week of OTAs before mandatory minicamp, which begins next Tuesday. Here are the standouts from OTA No. 7:

CB ELI APPLE

If it were a game, Apple saved the Giants 14 points. The third-year cornerback broke up two potential touchdowns, both on passes from Eli Manning. The first was intended for Sterling Shepard, and the second was headed for Hunter Sharp during work in the red zone. Apple keeps stacking together quality practices this spring in a new defense.

Sometimes the hardest reps are the ones between the ears. Hope he keeps up the strong work.

EAST RUTHERFORD -- Cornerback Eli Apple was pulled from Giantspractice twice Saturday for two different reasons.

Apple initiated a scuffle with tight end Evan Engram during 11-on-11 drills after inadvertently sliding at the tight end's ankles as he went out of bounds at the end of making a short catch on a crossing route.

It looked like Apple went for the shoulders of Engram and slipped down off his body as the recipient of a stiff arm. Lower body tackling considered a no-no in practice because of injury risk, even in full pads as the Giants have been for most of the last week.

An unhappy Engram turned his head to Apple, who popped up and two-hand shoved Engram in the face. Engram responded by throwing the football at Apple.

It didn't escalate into a fight and only a few teammates jumped in to break it up, but coach Pat Shurmur immediately pulled both players out for the next rep and kept Apple sidelined for the rest of the first-team defense series.

Shurmur explained it would be a fine in the games, and defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo sternly chastised a heated Apple on the sideline.

Soon after, Shurmur brought the entire team into a midfield huddle -- presumably to cool tempers -- before resuming a chippy practice.

Apple returned to the field for three more plays and was targeted twice by quarterback Eli Manning on short completions to Hunter Sharp. Apple knocked over Sharp with a clean shoulder drop.

But, on his final play of hte day, Apple and Sharp were tangled up down field as Manning rolled out of the pocket to extend a play. Apple went to the ground and hobbled off to the sideline, where his knee was looked at by the team's head athletic trainer, Ronnie Barnes, and others.

Apple tried to walk it off, went down to the ground a second time for further examination and eventually finished practice standing on the sideline. He had a slight limp as he walked off the field toward the VIP viewing section after practice and gave a thumbs up to indicate he is OK.

"He has fun competing out there, I think you can see that," Shurmur said of Apple earlier this week. "And I've enjoyed being around him and I think he's acting like a pro."

There has been no official injury update from the Giants and players have a day off Sunday.

Losing Apple -- even for a couple days of practice -- is the last thing the Giants need with cornerbacks William Gay, Donte Deayon and Sam Beal (season) already sidelined. The Giants signed veteran Leonard Johnson on Friday.
