Free Rivals - Talented Woodard has much to offer

Despite the recent NCAA troubles at Ohio State, the long standing relationship Woodard has with the school has made them the school to beat.

"I have known and been around Coach (Jim) Tressel and Coach (Darrell) Hazel since the summer of my seventh grade year, and it's just been a natural progression over the years," said Woodard. "I went the summer after my freshman year and tore it up, but then this year with Coach Tressel and Coach Hazel not there anymore, I felt like I had to do it all over again. I tore it up again and I know I can play at that level no problem."

Woodard is also not blind to the swirling NCAA allegations, but he remains hopeful.

"I think it's unfortunate and I believe Ohio State has stood up and handled their business in terms of what they have had to deal with," said Woodard. "They should be allowed to move on and get back to football."

With the hire of Urban Meyer, has that helped make Woodard feel better about Ohio State?

"It makes me feel more comfortable because I know they have a great coach now," he said. "There was a lot of uncertainty before he was hired and there still is with the NCAA and all that, but it doesn't change what Ohio State is."

"This has no impact on me or my interest in Ohio State," said Voorhees (N.J.) cornerback Eli Woodard, who has listed Ohio State as his favorite in the past. "I was expecting something like that and actually thought it might be worse, so it's not an issue.

"It's so far away for me anyhow; I'll be a senior when the bowl ban is in effect and I spoke to Coach Meyer yesterday about the future of the program and I'm excited."

First time I've actually seen film on him. I didn't realize he was so versatile. His future is at corner, no doubt. But he could be an explosive receiver, looks a lot like Neal.

Think there are 2 blocked kicks and the others are just different angles, either way kid can fly. Looks to have excellent hips and long arms, could get stronger. Can't wait till they start committing, Eli will be one of the first in line.

Just caught up with Tim Apple, the father of Eastern (N.J.) Voorhees four-star cornerback and future U.S. Army All-American Eli Woodard.

Ohio State is the early front runner for the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Woodard, but Rutgers is definitely strongly in the mix.

?I definitely think it makes an interesting situation, and it?s a surprising one, but the one thing we?ve learned in the recruiting process is don?t be surprised with coaches moving,? Apple told 247Sports. ?That is something we were seasoned by with Ohio State. It is a little bit of a factor. It does matter. It rings true don?t pick a school just because of the coaches, but at the same time coaches are very important to the process. It shows you have to get to know the school, you have to get to know the campus, you have to know the energy of the students. The school is always bigger than one person. With Coach Schiano it?s amazing what he?s done with the Rutgers program. It will be interesting to see where they go in terms of direction.?
