CB Eli Woodard honored by fifth star
July, 12, 2012
By Brad Bournival | ESPN.com
After great showings from Eli Woodard (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) and Ezekiel Elliott (St. Louis/John Burroughs) at The Opening in Beaverton, Ore., last weekend, it wasn?t a matter of if the tandem would fly up the ranks. It was a matter of how much.
Ohio State picked up its first five-star commitment in Woodard and Elliott shot up the charts in the latest ESPN 150 and ESPN 300 rankings, released Thursday.
The Buckeyes have six commitments ranked in the top 150 and 11 in the top 300 among their 14 recruits. They made a move up four spots from No. 9 to No. 5 in the overall rankings.

It?s been nothing short of a very memorable summer for Eli Woodard.
One of the nation?s top college football recruits, the Eastern High School senior recently participated in ?The Opening? ? an invitation-only event in Beaverton, Ore., for what Nike Football feels are the top 150 players in the country.
Held at Nike World Headquarters, the four-day event highlighted every position and every aspect of the game through dynamic training, coaching and competition.
?It was definitely great going up against the best wide receivers,? said Woodard, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back who received an invitation based on his play at a camp in Baltimore. ?I learned a lot about myself and my game. I feel like I got better.?
Woodard received significant instruction from some of the top defensive backs in the NFL ? Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals, Joe Haden of the Cleveland Browns and Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets.
?They gave us some tips and techniques to use. It was some good stuff,? Woodard said. ?I learned a lot and got to pick their brains a little. They gave us some time and I asked a lot of questions, especially with Peterson.
?I learned that my game is up there with anybody?s. I worked hard to do well at The Opening and I feel I?m one of the best guys in the country, but I?ll never be satisfied. I?m working hard to improve my game.?

Camps fire up Woodard
Five-star cornerback commit learned, gained confidence over summer

Eli Woodard (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) didn't mince words. In fact, the 6-foot, 185-pound, five-star cornerback made it perfectly clear.
When the class of 2013 steps onto the field at Ohio State next September, fans can expect the secondary to be among the best. Not the best in 2016, but the best right away.
So there's no reason for Cam Burrows (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison), Darron Lee (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) or Jayme Thompson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) to feel anxious.
Scott Fink for ESPN.comEli Woodard became a five-star recruit this summer on the camp circuit.
"With the talent we have coming in, I expect us to be one of the best ever at Ohio State," Woodard said. "There's too much talent here not to be the best.
"I have high expectations. We're looking to come in and do things right away at Ohio State. I don't think anyone feels any pressure. We know it's there. We just use it to work harder and get better."

VOORHEES ? Annie Apple wore on her face the smile of a happy mother.
And why not?
Apple and her husband Tim couldn?t help but show their pride Friday over their son Eli Woodard accepting his jersey, acknowledging him as a member of the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
The jersey was awarded in front of Woodard?s family, including his parents and his sister Jordan, teammates, coaches and friends in a ceremony at Eastern High School where Woodard is a corner back/receiver on the school?s football team.
?(For Woodard) to be honored by the military, the U.S. Army, is just an extraordinary honor,? said Annie Apple. ?These are people who lay their lives on the line every day for us to enjoy this great country.
?To honor Eli with all the attributes it takes to be a U.S. Army All-American, it means a lot. I?m blessed that they were interested him, that he displayed the characteristics that met the criteria to be considered an All-American.??
