Carrying the banner Senior symbolizes Eaglets?
success on football field
By Brad D. Bates
C & G Sports Writer
ORCHARD LAKE ? In 2003, the Orchard Lake St. Mary?s football team was bouncing back from a 3-6 season and putting a lot of its hopes on the back of a freshman.
The Eaglets had a young man from Detroit starting at cornerback, returning kicks and playing significant time at wide receiver.
St. Mary?s finished 7-3, erasing the memories of a down 2002, and the play of that freshman assured that everyone would recognize the name Dionte Allen for years to come.
?He?s an outstanding player and person,? St. Mary?s coach George Porritt said. ?As early as his freshman year, he was a very good football player, and you?ve got to be strong to fill different roles like he did.?
Led by a defense that posted three shutouts, the Eaglets didn?t just rebound in 2003; they won the first of three consecutive Prep Bowl titles.
Little did they know, the best was yet to come.
As much as St. Mary?s improved in Allen?s freshman year, the squad set the bar even higher in the next two seasons.
Allen helped lead the Eaglets to the Pontiac Silverdome in 2004 for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state championship game, where they?d finish runners-up to Muskegon High. Then, in his junior year, Allen helped the Eaglets to an undefeated regular season with titles in the Catholic High School League Central Division and Prep Bowl.
Of course, all that success only served to put more pressure on Allen for this, his senior season.
?(The pressure) is so-so,? Allen said. ?It?s pressure, but you have to deal with it.?
It should help that Allen is no stranger to pressure.
He will continue his football career at Florida State University next year, where he hopes to follow in the footsteps of All-American cornerbacks like Deion Sanders.
That will have to wait, though. Allen is fully committed to St. Mary?s and winning the one thing that has eluded him.
?A state championship is very important right now,? Allen said.
There are several reasons Allen and the Eaglets will not settle for anything short of a state title, not the least of which is the talent around Allen.
St. Mary?s welcomed in a handful of players from Detroit St. Martin De Porres after that school closed its doors following the 2004-05 school year. Those players included senior quarterback Justin Siller of Detroit.
Having to throw against him every day in practice, Siller said he noticed Allen?s abilities right away.
?He goes out and makes plays,? Siller said after practice Sept. 26. ?He allows me to make mistakes because I know he?s out there. He?s a lockdown corner.?
?Lockdown? is about the highest praise a defensive back can receive, but Allen is the first to say that he wouldn?t be in that class if it weren?t for his coaches and their philosophy on preparation.
?With coach Porritt, if you?re not getting it done in the classroom, you can?t perform on the football field,? Allen said. ?If you?re having a bad day at school, don?t think you can perform on the football field.?
School isn?t the only place Allen studies; he also puts in hours reviewing opponents? game film each week.
?He takes his time off the field,? Siller said. ?He watches a lot of film and knows his opponents and what each is going to do.?
Allen needs every advantage he can get given the strain that playing on offense, defense and special teams puts on a player?s body.
?The next day, your body is exhausted,? Allen said. ?I?m willing to do whatever our team needs, tired or not. If I have to stay after practice to run more sprints so I don?t get tired, that?s just how motivated I am for the team.?
With so much going into each game and each season, it?s easy to see why Allen has been successful, but it?s also a glimpse into why he is so driven in his senior year.
?It?s up to me, Taurian (Washington) and Justin,? Allen said. ?We have to step up to the competition and make more plays. Our seniors say they aren?t leaving St. Mary?s without a state championship."

It's hard for me to see the appeal of going all the way to FSU other than it being a childhood favorite. They're a loooooooong ways away from those 14 straight finishes in the top 5. Sure you get to play for a legend like Bobby Bowden but you also play for a bad coaching staff. Maybe it has to do with what Dionte wants to major in.

Since winning the NC in 1999, Florida State has a fairly unimpressive record of 58-24 (.707), including a 5-9 mark against in-state rivals Florida and Miami, and a 2-4 record in bowl games. Florida State is no longer an elite program, and I think that recruits are starting to catch on.

Could be the fact that they actually are forced to play a tougher schedule with BC, Va Tech, and Miami joining the conference.
