McGee questionable with back spasms
Associated Press

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Bills starting cornerback Terrence McGee is questionable for Buffalo's game against Tampa Bay after missing practice because of back spasms.

The Bills' top cornerback developed the spasms Friday morning after practicing all this week. If McGee can't play on Sunday, Ashton Youboty likely would take his place.

Bills tender 4 RFAs

The Bills announced they made tender offers to four restricted free agents - safety George Wilson, cornerback Ashton Youboty, tight end Derek Schouman and linebacker Keith Ellison.

Ellison was tendered at $1.17 million, and it would take a sixth-round pick for another team to sign him. It's virtually assured that Youboty and Schouman were signed at that level, too. Youboty was a third-rounder and Schouman a seventh-rounder.

Youboty re-signs
Chris Brown, Lead Journalist

Another one of Buffalo?s restricted free agents has re-signed for the 2010 season. Cornerback Ashton Youboty signed his qualifying tender offer Wednesday.

The four-year veteran appeared in 11 games for the Bills last season making one start against Atlanta in Week 16 when he posted a season-high four tackles and a pass breakup.

Youboty did miss five games in 2009 due to a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 10 against Houston.

The former third-round pick will be part of a secondary that?s considered the deepest positional group on the team at this point in time with fellow veterans Reggie Corner, Drayton Florence, Terrence McGee and Leodis McKelvin also at the cornerback position.

CB Ashton Youboty. Everyone is aware of the fact that Youboty's biggest Achilles heel at this point has been his lack of durability. In those infrequent moments Youboty has actually seen field time, he's actually been quite productive, recording an interception, two sacks and a forced fumble in very limited action throughout his career. But Youboty fell out of favor with Buffalo's previous coaching staff thanks to a questionable work ethic; perhaps a change in coaching will light a fire under Youboty, but in a loaded defensive backfield, Youboty will need to work quickly in finding a niche for himself if he plans to stay with the team for a fifth season.

Nickel corner revisited
Chris Brown
Posted July 11, 2010

With the nickel corner competition being addressed on the home page, I thought I?d toss in some observations from the spring camps.

Among those that made the most plays on passes through the course of the OTAs and minicamps of those listed in the nickel corner competition were Reggie Corner, Ellis Lankster and Ashton Youboty.

Now that?s not to say that Drayton Florence and Lydell Sargeant didn?t have their share of pass breakups too, they did. Florence?s game is clearly the most physical of the group and you need physical play inside.

The distance between the QB and the slot receiver is obviously shorter than with an outside WR, so getting a good jam or delaying the receiver from getting into his route is key inside. Florence excels in this area.

Youboty is the only other candidate in this group with a similar stature to Florence and he?s longer and lankier, which helps him knock passes away from receivers.

Corner, Lankster and Sargeant are all more compact type corners. They?re lightning quick, but if there?s a big WR in the slot channeling them to one side or another can be a task at times. Still their quickness affords them the ability to undercut receivers to make plays on the ball.

This nickel corner job is going to be one of the more competitive in camp, with a lot of capable candidates.

Youboty update
Posted by Chris Brown on October 7, 2010

Ashton Youboty is trying to come back from a hamstring injury suffered just last Sunday against the Jets. After not practicing Wednesday, he was back on the practice field Thursday.

?Youboty was able to get back out to practice today,? said head coach Chan Gailey. ?He was able to do some things.?

Officially Youboty was limited so he still appears to have some ground to cover to have a chance to play Sunday. If he cannot go Sunday, it would leave Buffalo with just three healthy cornerbacks, since Terrence McGee is out for this week as well.

Fortunately the Bills are facing a Jaguars team that doesn?t utilize spread formations all that much, so the Buffalo secondary shouldn?t be overtaxed in the passing game, unless Jacksonville decides to go to the air as opposed to working it on the ground. Knowing the Bills are surrendering almost 210 yards rushing per game, I can?t see the Jaguars steering away from that.

Had the Bills been facing a wide open offense like Green Bay or New England this week, they may have had to add a cornerback to their roster so they could go into the game with four. In all likelihood they?ll call upon Donte Whitner for some coverage assignments should Jacksonville go to any spread looks.

That idea wasn't absurd in retrospect, that idea was absurd at the time.

No offense to Ashton, I just never saw what made Nate the highest paid defensive player in the league (at the time) in him.

Ashton Youboty, cornerback: As I'm posting this article on Ashton's 27th birthday, happy birthday, Ashton. Youboty was barely used as the team's fifth cornerback last season, doing most of his work on special teams. If he's kept around, it'll be purely for numbers, as the Bills still don't have them at corner. Interest in retention: low Maximum cap figure: $1 million for one year
