CB Ashton Youboty (CB Coach Purdue)

Not to bash, but why do people keep forgetting that he had a hip pointer the entire second-half of the season? You could see in the way he ran, that he wasn't 100%. Think that might make it a little tough to cover? I do. I do agree, he has poor hands, how many picks did he drop over the season. At least 4 or 5 I believe.

I was shocked to hear this after watching this season. I thought Ashton would stick around, but I didn't realize people were talking about him as a potential 1st or 2nd round pick after the year he had. Not that he was bad or anything, I just didn't realize the draft gurus were projecting him that high. Good luck to him, I hope he goes high and gets a big payday.

Bottom line is you can't fault a kid for choosing to play for a six figure paycheck over playing for free tuition. Whether he's a sure fire first rounder or just a first day pick, if that's what one of our players chooses to do I'll still be cheering for him on Sundays.:osu:

some of you are saying he's not ready, that he has serious flaws, but that we can't replace him. That doesn't really matchup IMO. youboty was a liability at times this year, and the healthy youboty wasn't outstanding in the fiesta bowl either.

You make a pretty good argument. However, there are things missing. I agree with these seemingly inconsistent points, namely that Ashton isn't yet ready and that it will be hard to replace him. I don't yet think he's ready b/c although I thought his tackling was great this year, his coverage skills were lacking at times; accordingly, I think he would do well to play another year at the college level. Yet I also think it will be hard to replace him for several reasons; to name a couple, I think with his experience and the ability he showed in his sophomore season he has more upside than anyone we have returning, and I think with his experience of starting for 2 seasons he could have provided the intangible of being a team leader and one to whom the younger, more inexperienced players (of which we will have many starting next year) could have rallied around.

Interesting tidbit from the Dispatch this morning.....

Kiper rates Youboty the fourth-best defensive back and slates him to be picked 20 th by Kansas City.

"He’s a first-rounder," Kiper said yesterday. "He struggled some in coverage earlier in the season, but he had a good Michigan game and a good bowl game. Plus, he’s a corner, and corners go high."

Youboty has the size the NFL likes (6 feet 1, 188 pounds) and is a solid tackler. The recent history of OSU cornerbacks in the NFL might help, as well.

Youboty is a great tackler, just go back to that Minnesota game and look at the hits he put on Maroney...

Agreed, it seems often people point to the MN game as AY getting "burnt", and while he had big catches made on him and TDs scored against him I always thought he looked to be in position and have good coverage even on those plays made against him. The MN QB and WRs just made some excellant throws and catches. And as mentioned, he was great in run support that game.

I still have a feeling he slides to the second round, but he'll make some team happy where ever he goes.

on 1460 (the big show), the colts GM had generalized good things to say about youboty. He seemed to downplay the minnesota game. He said corners that can tackle are drafted high, and ones that can run as well are extremely valuable. Sounds like ashton to me.

If he can rip off a few good runs in the combine events, I think Ashton may well prove many buckeye fans (including myself) wrong who were doubting his decision to turn pro.

CFN discusses Replacements for early entries...

[FONT=verdana, arial, sans serif] CB Ashton Youboty, Ohio State
Impact: Harsh. Losing Youboty, an inconsistent, yet potentially superb corner, was exacerbated by the departure of Donte Whitner and graduations of Nate Salley and Tyler Everett. The Buckeyes will have almost no experience in the secondary in 2006 and no returning starters in the back seven.
Successor: True freshman Malcolm Jenkins gave an eye-opening performance in ten games, and has the makeup to become the next great Buckeye cornerback.
