CB Ashton Youboty (CB Coach Purdue)

I am very, very surprised by this. Had you asked me 2 weeks ago, I would have said Santonio's gone for sure, but there's only a 25% chance Whitner will go and only a 10% chance that Ashton will go. IMO Whitner will go in the late 2nd to mid 3rd round and Ashton will go in the late 3rd to mid 4th round. I think both of them really could have increased their draft status with another year in college (not to mention be a team captain and possibly win a NC).

Maybe Youboty will increase his draft status at the combine or something.
He has height, and is a great tackler, NFL scouts like that.
But honestly, with the way he played for over half this past season, I dont think the defense will really miss him.
The depth is the only thing that could hurt us, but he wasn't exactly shutting down the opposition...

From the article:

"The one thing that is a reality in this new world of early enrollment is that some of the guys feel more a part of the older class that they are really not in," he said. "In Ashton’s case, he was only here one quarter less time than (seniors) Nate Salley and A.J. Hawk. I think he feels a little more attached to that group. . . . I just hope he gains the draft status he is capable of gaining."

It's almost like he's not declaring early. Similar to Santonio, who is a junior eligibility-wise, but really a senior, and as such isn't really leaving "early".

Like JT said...kids that come in early for Spring practice sometimes almost identify themselves more with the freshman class that enrolled that Fall. So a guy like Youboty might feel like he is a part of that senior class that is leaving.

Congratulations Ashton! Yeah maybe if he stayed he could have been a first round pick and maybe with a good combine and proday he still can be. Who am I to ? his decision though . The kid has gone from lucky to be alive after having to live in a war torn Liberia to living the American Dream. I couldn't be happier for him or prouder of him. He is the epitome of hard work, excellence, and The Ohio State University. Thank you for what you've done here and kick some ass at the combine Ashton, we're all pulling for you.:osu3:

I think he could have helped his stock by staying, but you can not argue with gettting your degree in June and wanting to help your family and yourself. Could luck and now Mr Jenkins and Andre Amos welcome to starting.

No matter how we spin this, 2 returning starters on the defensive side of the football spells trouble.

Its not as dire a situation as everyone is believing. At OSU its just time for the next wave of great players to step up, O'Neal, Freeman, Amos, Wilson just to name a few. They will be sound, we have some players who have played but not started, we will be fine.

some of you are saying he's not ready, that he has serious flaws, but that we can't replace him. That doesn't really matchup IMO. youboty was a liability at times this year, and the healthy youboty wasn't outstanding in the fiesta bowl either. Everett was solid but not spectacular. Jenkins was solid this year, and should be able to match the '05 youboty if not improve upon it after a year in the system.
'04 teaches us otherwise.
'04 had zero offense... not a ton of third year stars on offense (Smith, Pittman, Ginn, Gonzo), plus some nobody named wells

we will not have a similar D next year, however we should not need as much D

I disagree. 2004 saw a new starting quarterback, running back, 3 new starters on the offensive line and 2 new wide receivers, thats the reason we struggled somewhat that season. Just remember that JT is a great defensive coach, he will find the pieces for us to be successful. The offense will carry us early, while the defense develops.
